Описание: Why is Eastern Europe still different from Western Europe, more than a quarter-century after the collapse of Communism? A History of Eastern Europe 1918 to the Present shows how the roots of this difference are based in Eastern Europe's tortured 20th century.
Eastern Europe emerged in 1918 as the 'lands between', new states whose weakness vis-a-vis Germany and Soviet Russia soon became obvious. The region was the main killing-field of the Second World War, which visited unimaginable horrors on its inhabitants before their 'liberation' by the Soviets in 1945. The imposition of Communist dictatorships on the region, ironically, only deepened Eastern Europe's backwardness. Even in the post-Communist period, its problems continue to make it a fertile breeding-ground for nationalism and political extremism.
A History of Eastern Europe 1918 to the Present explores the comparative backwardness of Eastern Europe and how this has driven strategies of modernisation; it looks at the ways in which the region has served as a giant test-tube for political experimentation and, in particular, at the enduring strength of nationalism, which since 1989 has re-emerged more virulent than ever.
This book in the essential textbook for any student of 20th-century Eastern Europe.

Описание: Hans Rogger`s study of Russia under the last two Tsars takes as its starting point what the Russians themselves saw as the central issue confronting their nation: the relationship between state and society, and its effects on politics, economics and class in these critical years.
Описание: The final weeks of the First World War saw a revolutionary upheaval in Europe as old empires collapsed and new, self-proclaimed 'nation-states' emerged in their place. For its advocates, the Yugoslav state created in 1918 represented a largely uniform culture and identity. But as its official name—the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes—suggested, its population was by no means homogeneous and Britain, who had been instrumental in the birth of the state at Versailles, as well as other Europeans and the Americans, came to appreciate that divisions of religious affiliation and historical tradition continued to override linguistic unity.Through analysing British ideas and assumptions about the region's history and culture, James Evans assesses how these were reshaped by newly prevalent ideas about Yugoslav nationality. Attitudes and preconceptions first formed during this period would prove remarkably enduring, making their mark on British responses to events in Yugoslavia throughout the country's troubled history.Great Britain and the Creation of Yugoslavia sheds valuable light not only on attitudes to Yugoslav nationality in the early twentieth century, but also on western responses to the violent demise of the Yugoslav state at the close of the century.

Offering a vital recasting of the modernisation of the Labour Party, this book sheds new light on the Party's years in the wilderness between 1979 and 1997. Christopher Massey traces the major organisational changes across these eighteen years, arguing that Labour's organisational modernisation fundamentally altered its internal structures, policy-making pathways and constitution.
Beginning with the situation inherited by Labour's leadership in the early 1980s, Massey traces Neil Kinnock's quest for a stable majority on the party's ruling National Executive Committee between 1983 and 1987. From this position, the book examines four major organisational changes: the Policy Review (1987-92), One Member, One Vote (1992-94), Clause IV (1995-96), and Partnership in Power (1996-97).
Making extensive use of previously unseen archival materials, including the journals of the party's former General Secretary, Lord Tom Sawyer, and primary interviews with Labour leaders, General Secretaries, former Members of Parliament and Party staff, this book is essential reading for those wishing to understand the modernisation of the Labour Party.

Roger Suny examines the Revolution in Baku, important provincial capital and oil center of the Russian empire. His study of Baku's national and class conflicts, Bolshevism as it developed in the city, and the failure of the Commune in 1918 amends our picture of the Revolution as the work ofa highly conspiratorial party, seizing power by force and imposing its will on a reluctant population by terror.

Описание: This book offers a new perspective of the Pacific War as seen through the experience of African Americans. Chris Dixon explores the relationship between race, American military power, and foreign policy during the Pacific War, paying particular attention to African Americans` attitudes and interactions with other non-white peoples.
In 1900, some 100,000 people living in Bulgaria—2 percent of the country's population—could be described as Greek, whether by nationality, language, or religion. The complex identities of the population—proud heirs of ancient Hellenic colonists, loyal citizens of their Bulgarian homeland, members of a wider Greek diasporic community, devout followers of the Orthodox Patriarchate in Istanbul, and reluctant supporters of the Greek government in Athens—became entangled in the growing national tensions between Bulgaria and Greece during the first half of the twentieth century. In Between Two Motherlands, Theodora Dragostinova explores the shifting allegiances of this Greek minority in Bulgaria. Diverse social groups contested the meaning of the nation, shaping and reshaping what it meant to be Greek and Bulgarian during the slow and painful transition from empire to nation-states in the Balkans. In these decades, the region was racked by a series of upheavals (the Balkan Wars, World War I, interwar population exchanges, World War II, and Communist revolutions). The Bulgarian Greeks were caught between the competing agendas of two states increasingly bent on establishing national homogeneity.Based on extensive research in the archives of Bulgaria and Greece, as well as fieldwork in the two countries, Dragostinova shows that the Greek population did not blindly follow Greek nationalist leaders but was torn between identification with the land of their birth and loyalty to the Greek cause. Many emigrated to Greece in response to nationalist pressures; others sought to maintain their Greek identity and traditions within Bulgaria; some even switched sides when it suited their personal interests. National loyalties remained fluid despite state efforts to fix ethnic and political borders by such means as population movements, minority treaties, and stringent citizenship rules. The lessons of a case such as this continue to reverberate wherever and whenever states try to adjust national borders in regions long inhabited by mixed populations.

Описание: Uncovers the long history of how Latino manhood was integral to the formation of Latino identity
In the first ever book-length study of Latino manhood before the Civil Rights Movement, Before Chicano examines Mexican American print culture to explore how conceptions of citizenship and manhood developed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The year 1848 saw both the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the U.S. Mexican War and the year of the Seneca Falls Convention, the first organized conference on women's rights in the United States. These concurrent events signaled new ways of thinking about U.S. citizenship, and placing these historical moments into conversation with the archive of Mexican American print culture, Varon offers an expanded temporal frame for Mexican Americans as long-standing participants in U.S. national projects.
Pulling from a wide-variety of familiar and lesser-known works--from fiction and newspapers to government documents, images, and travelogues--Varon illustrates how Mexican Americans during this period envisioned themselves as U.S. citizens through cultural depictions of manhood. Before Chicano reveals how manhood offered a strategy to disparate Latino communities across the nation to imagine themselves as a cohesive whole--as Mexican Americans--and as political agents in the U.S. Though the Civil Rights Movement is typically recognized as the origin point for the study of Latino culture, Varon pushes us to consider an intellectual history that far predates the late twentieth century, one that is both national and transnational. He expands our framework for imagining Latinos' relationship to the U.S. and to a past that is often left behind.
