Описание: Plato and the Elements of Dialogue examines Plato's use of the three necessary elements of dialogue: character, time, and place. By identifying and taking up striking employments of these features from throughout Plato's work, this book seeks to map their functions and importance. By focusing on the Symposium, Cratylus, and Republic, this book shows three ways that characters can be related to what they do and what they say. Next, the book takes up 'displacement' by focusing on the Hippias Major, arguing that individual characters can be expanded by the repeated practice of asking them to consider a question from a point of view other than their own. This ties into the treatments of 'thinking' in the Theaetetus and Sophist. The Parmenides, Lysis, and Philebus are examined to come to a better understanding of the functions of the settings (times/places) of Plato's dialogues, while a reading of the beginning of the of the Phaedo shows how Plato can expand the settings of the dialogues by using 'frames' in order to direct his readers. Last, this book takes up the 'critique of writing' that closes the Phaedrus.

Описание:
Plato's philosophical dialogues can be seen as his creation of a new genre. Plato borrows from, as well as rejects, earlier and contemporary authors, and he is constantly in conversation with established genres, such as tragedy, comedy, lyric poetry, and rhetoric in a variety of ways. This intertextuality reinforces the relevance of material from other types of literary works, as well as a general knowledge of classical culture in Plato's time, and the political and moral environment that Plato addressed, when reading his dramatic dialogues.
The authors of Philosophy as Drama show that any interpretation of these works must include the literary and narrative dimensions of each text, as much as serious the attention given to the progression of the argument in each piece. Each dialogue is read on its own merit, and critical comparisons of several dialogues explore the differences and likenesses between them on a dramatic as well as on a logical level. This collection of essays moves debates in Plato scholarship forward when it comes to understanding both particular aspects of Plato's dialogues and the approach itself. Containing 11 chapters of close readings of individual dialogues, with 2 chapters discussing specific themes running through them, such as music and sensuousness, pleasure, perception, and images, this book displays the range and diversity within Plato's corpus.

Описание:
The rapidly expanding field of critical animal studies now offers a myriad of theoretical and philosophical positions from which to choose. This timely book provides an overview and analysis of the most influential of these trends. Approachable and concise, it is intended for readers sympathetic to the project of changing our ways of thinking about and interacting with animals yet relatively new to the variety of philosophical ideas and figures in the discipline. It uses three rubrics—identity, difference, and indistinction—to differentiate three major paths of thought about animals. The identity approach aims to establish continuity among human beings and animals so as to grant animals equal access to the ethical and political community. The difference framework views the animal world as containing its own richly complex and differentiated modes of existence in order to allow for a more expansive ethical and political worldview. The indistinction approach argues that we should abandon the notion that humans are unique in order to explore new ways of conceiving human-animal relations. Each approach is interrogated for its relative strengths and weaknesses, with specific emphasis placed on the kinds of transformational potential it contains.

Описание: Plato`s late dialogues have often been neglected because they lack the literary charm of his earlier masterpieces. In this book these six diverse and difficult dialogues are considered together as aspects of Plato`s project for reformulating his theory of Forms to apply to the philosophy of nature.

Описание: This 1995 study investigates how Plato `invented` the discipline of philosophy. In order to define and legitimise philosophy, Dr Nightingale maintains, Plato had to match it against genres of discourse that had authority and currency in democratic Athens.
Описание: This book presents the first full translation of the correspondence of Leo Strauss and Gerhard Kr ger, showing for each the development of key and influential ideas, along with seven interpretative essays by leading Strauss scholars. During the early to mid-1930's, Leo Strauss carried on an intense, and sometimes deeply personal, correspondence with one of the leading intellectual lights among Heidegger's circle of recent students and younger associates. A fellow traveler in the effort to "return to Plato" and reject neo-Kantian conventions of the day, Kr ger was also a serious student of Rudolf Bultmann and the neo-orthodox movement in which Strauss also took an early interest. During the most intense years of their correspondence, each underwent significant intellectual development: in Kr ger's case, through a penetrating series of studies of Kant and Descartes, respectively, ultimately leading to Kr ger's conversion to Catholicism; and, in Strauss's case, through the complex stages of what he subsequently called his "reorientation," involving what he for the first time calls "political philosophy." Readers interested in tracing the development of Strauss's thoughts regarding a theological alternative that he found helpfully challenging--if not ultimately compelling--will find this correspondence to be an accessible point of entry.
Описание: In Seeing Through the World, Jeremy Johnson introduces the work of German-Swiss philosopher, poet, and intellectual mystic Jean Gebser (1905-1973). Gebser`s insights on the phenomenology of human consciousness bring profound intellectual depth to the field of integral philosophy. Until now, little secondary literature has been available in English
