Описание: Addressing the controversial history of an aesthetic - Realism - whose central purpose is the negotiation of social, political, and material realities, this book examines the ways in which it engages capital, social decorum and manners, the law and its intrinsic politicisation, the emergence of modern science as a determining factor concerning truth, and the corruptions of the aesthetic under the force of the politics of identity in the contemporary sphere. It draws on an extremely broad range of texts, including literary works from French, English, Italian and Russian writers from the mid-19th century to the present day, including work by Flaubert, Baudelaire, Zola, Henry James, Dickens, and Orwell. In addition to literary texts, this books points of reference also encompass paintings and films, finally proposing a new philosophical conception of the politics of Realism in an age when politics is increasingly driven by imaginary fantasists.

Описание: By the early twentieth century, as Woodrow Wilson would later declare, the United States had become both the literal embodiment of all the earth's peoples and a nation representing all other nations and cultures through its ethnic and cultural diversity. This idea of connection with all peoples, Nathaniel Cadle argues, allowed American literary writers to circulate their work internationally, in turn promoting American literature and also the nation itself. Reexamining the relationship between Progressivism and literary realism, Cadle demonstrates that the narratives constructed by American writers asserted a more active role for the United States in world affairs and helped to shift global influence from Europe to North America. From the novels of Henry James, William Dean Howells, and Abraham Cahan to the political and social writings of Woodrow Wilson and W. E. B. Du Bois, Cadle identifies a common global engagement through which realists and Progressives articulated a stronger and more active cultural, political, and social role for the United States.

Forth and Back: Translation, Dirty Realism, and the Spanish Novel (1975 1995)

Описание: Forth and Back broadens the scope of Hispanic trans-Atlantic studies by shifting its focus to Spain's trans-literary exchange with the United States at the end of the twentieth century. Santana analyzes the translation "boom" of U.S. literature that marked literary production in Spain after Franco's death, and the central position that U.S. writing came to occupy within the Spanish literary system. Santana examines the economic and literary motives that underlay the phenomenon, as well as the particular socio-cultural appeal that U.S. "dirty realist" writers--which in Spain included authors as diverse as Charles Bukowski, Raymond Carver, and Bret Easton Ellis--held for Spaniards in the 1980s. Santana also studies the subsequent appropriation of this writing by a polemic group of young Spanish writers in the 1990s whoself-consciously and insistently associated themselves with the U.S.. Forth and Back illustrates that literary movements do not unilaterally spread; rather, those that flourish take root in fertile soil and are transformed in their travel by the desires, creative choices, and practical constraints of their differing producers and consumers. It is precisely in the crossing of these currents that plots thicken. The translation of dirty realism, its reception in Spain, and its cultural legacy as appropriated by the young Spanish writers, serve to interrogate a perceived U.S. hegemony. If Spanish realismo sucio has been said to be symptomatic of the globalization of literature, Forth and Back argues that the Spanish works in question posed a subtle reaffirmation of Spanish literature's strong ties to realist fiction, a gesture of continuity in a decade that seemed to presence the undoing of much of Spain's "Spanish-ness." Ultimately, this project asks an ambitious pair of questions at the heart of human culture: how do we "read" each other, quite literally, across geography and language? How do we construct others and ourselves vis- -vis those readings?

Описание:

For many artists and intellectuals in East Germany, daily life had an undeniably surreal aspect, from the numbing repetition of Communist Party jargon to the fear and paranoia engendered by the Stasi. Echoes of Surrealism surveys the ways in which a sense of the surreal infused literature and art across the lifespan of the GDR, focusing on individual authors, visual artists, directors, musicians, and other figures who have employed surrealist techniques in their work. It provides a new framework for understanding East German culture, exploring aesthetic practices that offered an alternative to rigid government policies and questioned and confronted the status quo.

Описание:

Providing close readings of well-known British realist writers including Pat Barker, A. S. Byatt, Rose Tremain, Sarah Hall, Bernadine Evaristo and Zadie Smith, this book uses new directions in material and posthuman feminism to examine how contemporary women writers explore the challenges we collectively face today.
Walezak redresses negative assumptions about realism's alleged conservatism and demonstrates the vitality and relevance of the realist genre in experimenting with the connections between individual and collective voices, human and non-human meditations, local and global scales, and author and reader.
Considering how contemporary realist writing is attuned to pressing issues including globalization, climate change, and interconnectivity, this book provides innovative new ways of reading realism, examines how these writers are looking to reinvent the genre, and shows how realism helps reimagine our place in the world.
