Описание:
This book demonstrates the rich and varied ways in which heavy metal music draws on the ancient Greek and Roman world. Bands from across the globe, including Italy's Stormlord and Heimdall, Greece's Kawir, Switzerland's Eluveitie and Celtic Frost, Norway's Theatre of Tragedy, Sweden's Therion, Germany's Blind Guardian, Canada's Ex Deo and the UK's Iron Maiden and Bal-Sagoth, are all discussed in this volume. These and other bands are shown to draw inspiration from classical literature and mythology such as Homer's Iliad, Virgil's Aeneid and Caesar's Gallic Wars and from historical peoples such as the Scythians, ancient Egyptians and Roman emperors.
These interactions are often concerned with the nature of paganism, the occult and barbarism, nationalism, the conflict between East and West, and the development of powerful evocations of brutality and femininity. The contributors frequently weave in comparisons with the reception of antiquity in painting and literature to show how the genre of heavy metal brings its own perspectives to classical reception but also shows strands of continuity of practice. They show how this musical genre - often dismissed as lowbrow - engages in sophisticated dialogue with ancient texts, myths, and historical figures, revealing aspects of Classics' continued appeal while also arguing that the engagement with myth and history is a defining characteristic of heavy metal music, especially in countries that were once part of the Roman Empire.

Описание: This tightly focused collection of essays by a distinguished group of scholars analyses the degree to which expressions of emotion in ancient literature and art become an 'artistic' rather than a 'social' construct. To what degree do literary genres, philosophy and visual arts produce expectations for the arousal of certain emotions? Are the emotions of women, for example, represented differently in different genres? How and why do literary genres and visual arts concentrate on specific emotions and stylise them accordingly, and how do particular emotions relate to gender within literary texts? The book will be of interest to all students and scholars of classical literature and gender studies. Contributors: Peter J. Описание: The essays in this volume highlight the multiple perspectives on biblical Paradise from Second Temple Judaism and Christian origins to Augustine and rabbinic literature. Dealing with a variety of texts, they explore the allegorical and literal interpretations of Paradise, the tension between heaven and earth, and Paradise`s physical location in space and time.
In The Space That Remains, Aaron Pelttari offers the first systematic study of the major fourth-century poets since Michael Robert's foundational The Jeweled Style. It is the first book to give equal attention to both Christian and Pagan poetry and the first to take seriously the issue of readership.
As Pelttari shows, the period marked a turn towards forms of writing that privilege the reader's active involvement in shaping the meaning of the text. In the poetry of Ausonius, Claudian, and Prudentius we can see the increasing importance of distinctions between old and new, ancient and modern, forgotten and remembered. The strange traditionalism and verbalism of the day often concealed a desire for immediacy and presence. We can see these changes most clearly in the expectations placed upon readers. The space that remains is the space that the reader comes to inhabit, as would increasingly become the case in the literature of the Latin Middle Ages.

Описание: Modern critics assume a bipartite separation between images and texts, whereas classical antiquity toyed with a more playful and engaged relation between the two. This book uses the ancient world to rethink our own ideologies of the visual and the verbal, providing a new cultural history of Western visual thinking.
