Описание: This book argues that Americans` belief in post-racialism, rooted in both ideology and material progress among racial minorities, is wrong because both old and new patterns of racism continue to hinder the acceptance of African Americans as true equals in American society, despite the recent mobility of the black middle class.

Описание: The Trump Paradox: Migration, Trade and Racial Politics in US-Mexico Relations explores one of the most complex and unequal cross-border relations anywhere in the world, in the light of a twenty-first century political economy generally and the rise of Donald Trump in particular. The book examines current US-Mexico relations through state-of-the-art analysis by scholars from both Mexico and the United States, sometimes working on binational teams. Organized into four sections, the first two chapters frame the trade and migration paradoxes that inform the exploration of these issues in the rest of the book. Politics has paradoxically stirred racial resentment around immigrants just as immigration from Mexico has reached net zero and without consideration for the trillion-plus contribution of Latinos to the US GDP. Indeed, a dilemma for rich and aging societies like the United States is that for their economies to continue flourishing, they need immigrants.

Описание:

WINNER OF THE W.E.B. DUBOIS DISTINGUISHED BOOK AWARD, GIVEN BY THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF BLACK POLITICAL SCIENTISTS
A wide-ranging Black feminist interrogation, reaching from the #MeToo movement to the legacy of gender-based violence against Black women
From Michelle Obama to Condoleezza Rice, Black women are uniquely scrutinized in the public eye. In Re-Imagining Black Women, Nikol G. Alexander-Floyd explores how Black women—and Blackness more broadly—are understood in our political imagination and often become the subjects of public controversy.
Drawing on politics, popular culture, psychoanalysis, and more, Alexander-Floyd examines our conflicting ideas, opinions, and narratives about Black women, showing how they are equally revered and reviled as an embodiment of good and evil, cast either as victims or villains, citizens or outsiders.
Ultimately, Alexander-Floyd showcases the complex experiences of Black women as political subjects. At a time of extreme racial tension, Re-Imagining Black Women provides insight into the parts that Black women play, and are expected to play, in politics and popular culture.

Описание: This book addresses the question: how can we talk about race in a world that is considered post-racial, a world where race doesn’t exist? Kamaloni engages with the tradition of everyday racism and traces the process of racialisation through the interaction of bodies in space. Exploring the embodied experience exposes the idea of post-racialism as a response to continued cultural anxieties about race and the desire to erase it. Understanding Racism in a Post-Racial World presents a broader question about what everyday encounters about race might tell us about the current cultural construction of race. The book provides a much-needed investigation of the intersection of race, bodies and space as a critical part of how bodies and spaces become racialised, and will be of value to students and scholars interested in understanding and discussing race across interdisciplinary areas such as cultural studies, communication, gender studies, geography, body studies, literature studies and urban studies.

Описание:

Racialized Consciousness discusses how race, as an invention, has had profound consequences on the economic, political, and social conditions of humans across the world, particularly in the United States. Today, it continues to manifest in those conditions while shaping in no uncertain terms the way Americans view and interact with each other. Racialized Consciousness aims to supplement the extant body of literature by drawing the readers’ attention to the salient factors that compel them to embrace, more often than not, race as their primary purveyor of identity. Each chapter of Racialized Consciousness unfolds with a diachronic juxtaposition of racially motivated events, political developments, and historical and legal documents in symbiotically dialectical dialogues. Critical race theories both mediate and assess the extent to which their racialized consciousness has been liberated or deepened, either symbolically or materially. Critical race theories, as informed by the social sciences, legal studies, and social psychology, serve both as a bifocal lens to view and a dialectic interface to examine issues such as racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, white nationalism, black nationalism, Chicanos, discrimination, prejudice, slavery, mass incarceration, racial injustice, immigration, and Jim Crow; and concerns such as affirmative action, meritocracy, colorblindness, and micro-aggressions; and legacies of court cases such as Brown v. Board of Education, Plessy v. Ferguson, and Loving v. Virginia. The depth, acuity, multidimensionality, fairmindedness, breadth, lucidity, accessibility, theoretical perspectives, and resourcefulness of this book will expand and deepen discussions in sociology, political science, cultural studies, foundations, and social psychology courses. Students, professors, researchers, and librarians alike will want to read Racialized Consciousness and keep it handy, as they look back into one of most racially charged elections in 2016 and into the future where race, racial identities, and racial politics could potentially become more ubiquitous, complicated, and consequential.

Contesting Post-Racialism: Conflicted Churches in the United States and South Africa

Описание: After the 2008 election and 2012 reelection of Barack Obama as US president and the 1994 election of Nelson Mandela as the first of several blacks to serve as South Africa's president, many within the two countries have declared race to be irrelevant. For contributors to this volume, the presumed demise of race may be premature. Given continued racial disparities in income, education, and employment, as well as in perceptions of problems and promise within the two countries, much healing remains unfinished. Nevertheless, despite persistently pronounced disparities between black and white realities, it has become more difficult to articulate racial issues. Some deem ""race"" an increasingly unnecessary identity in these more self-consciously ""post-racial"" times. The volume engages post-racial ideas in both their limitations and promise. Contributors look specifically at the extent to which a church's contemporary response to race consciousness and post-racial consciousness enables it to give an accurate public account of race.

Описание:

Racialism and Media: Black Jesus, Black Twitter and the First Black American President is an exploration of how the nature of racial ideology has changed in our society. Yes, there are still ugly racists who push uglier racism, but there are also popular constructions of race routinely woven into mediated images and messages. This book examines selected exemplars of racialism moving beyond traditional racism. In the twenty-first century, we need a more nuanced understanding of racial constructions. Denouncing anything and everything problematic as racist or racism simply does not work, especially if we want to move toward a real solution to America’s race problems. Racialism involves images and messages that are produced, distributed, and consumed repetitively and intertextually based on stereotypes, biased framing, and historical myths about African American culture. These images and messages are eventually normalized through the media, ultimately shaping and influencing societal ideology and behavior. Through the lens of critical race theory these chapters examine issues of intersectionality in Crash, changing Black identity in Black-ish, the balancing of stereotypes in prime-time TV’s Black male and female roles, the power of Black images and messages in advertising, the cultural wealth offered through the Black Twitter platform, biased media framing of the first Black American president, the satirical parody of Black Jesus, contemporary Zip Coon stereotypes in film, the popularity of ghettofabulous black culture, and, finally, the evolution of black representation in science fiction.
