Описание: Medical informatics lies at the intersection of computer science and medicine, and understanding critical aspects of both fields provides for more proficient practitioners. Biomedical Informatics: An Introduction to Information Systems and Software in Medicine and Health supplies a cohesive narrative of the multidisciplinary concepts linking the field. This complete medical informatics textbook begins by reviewing the IT aspects of informatics, including systems architecture, electronic health records, interoperability, privacy and security, cloud computing, mobile healthcare, imaging, data capture, and design issues. Next, the text provides case studies that demonstrate the roll out of electronic health records (EHRs) in hospitals. The third section incorporates four anatomy and physiology lectures that focus on the physiological basis behind data captured in EHRs. Examples include detailed descriptions of the heart and electrical systems, lungs and alveoli, and oxygen exchange. The book includes a primer on the theoretical concepts that underpin the science behind medical informatics, including an Anatomy & Physiology Essentials guide. It also contains a tutorial on application development to help students understand the tools for improving user interfaces for EHRs on mobile platforms. The author uses a student-friendly organizational structure that supplies students with a clear demarcation between essential and optional material. The text supplies clear delineation between Level I, the basic concepts every biomedical informatics professional needs to master; Level II, applied concepts and examples; and Level III, advanced topics. This format allows undergraduate and graduate instructors and professionals in the field to focus quickly on the essential topics, and if interested, delve into Level III advanced topics. The book includes links to documents and standards sources so students can explore each idea described in more detail. Instructor’s manual, solutions manual, videos, figure slides, and lecture slides are available upon qualified course adoption.

Описание:

As healthcare moves from volume to value, payment models and delivery systems will need to change their focus from the individual patient to a population orientation. This will move our economic model from that of a "sick system" to a system of care focused on prevention, boosting patient engagement, and reducing medical expenditures. This new focus will shift traditional financial accountability from the payer model to provider directed models.

Population Health: An Implementation Guide to Improve Outcomes and Lower Costs
covers not only the rationale for this transition, but also outlines successful practice models that are built to thrive in these new market dynamics. Besides the philosophical and the cultural aspects of these new models, it details the implementation and strategic initiatives required to succeed in today's value- and population-oriented healthcare environment.

Describing what population health is, the book explains why it represents an opportunity for healthcare delivery systems, public health agencies, community-based organizations, and other entities to work together to improve health outcomes in the communities they serve.

The book clarifies how the new models will impact healthcare providers, how to manage populations, and how to handle the risk factors involved. It details new delivery models, such as primary care and medical neighborhoods, and outlines the value proposition of screening and prevention in assigned populations.

Описание: SYSTEMS SCIENCE AND POPULATION HEALTH employs principles from across a range of sciences to refine the way we understand population health. By augmenting traditional analytic approaches with new tools like machine learning, microsimulation, and social network analysis, population health can be studied as a dynamic and complex system. This allows us to understand population health as a complex whole, offering new insights and perspectives that stand to improve thehealth of the public. This text offers the first educational and practical guide to this forward-thinking approach.

Описание: Healthcare leaders have long been trained in the key principles of management within the organization. However, numerous developments across the healthcare landscape - from evolving payment models to growing recognition of the social determinants of health - have highlighted the need to expand this training well beyond an internal focus. Today's leaders must be able to apply management concepts with a comprehensive understanding of the communities they serve, the populations for which they assume risk, and the numerous entities that provide or pay for services across the continuum of care. Case Studies in Population and Community Health Management presents a collection of real-world scenarios through which readers can develop and sharpen their ability to manage 'beyond the walls of a single institution. For each case, the reader is asked to analyze a health challenge facing a community, draw from the data and background information provided, consider specific target audiences and stakeholders, apply management theories, and, ultimately, decide on an appropriate course of action.

Building on Early Gains in Afghanistan`s Health, Nutrition, and Population Sector: Challenges and Options

Описание: This volume is the first of its kind to present a comprehensive assessment of the health sector in Afghanistan. Although health outcomes here are some of the worst in the world, the sector has made considerable progress since 2001. A nationwide survey conducted in late 2006 found that the infant mortality rate had fallen from 165 to 129 per 1,000 live births, and the under-five mortality rate had fallen from 257 to 191 per 1,000 live births. These figures represent a 22 percent and a 26 percent decline, respectively, from the end of 2001. Similarly, coverage of prenatal care has increased from less than 5 percent to 32 percent, and childhood vaccinations of DPT3 (diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus) have increased from less than 20 percent to 35 percent between 2003 and 2006. Administrative data indicate that the number of functioning primary health care facilities has nearly doubled, from 498 in 2001 to more than 936 in 2008. Also, the quality of care in publicly financed facilities has increased by about 22 percent from 2004 to 2006. Although this progress is encouraging, it is not sufficient to ensure that Afghanistan will achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). 'Building on Early Gains in Afghanistan's Health, Nutrition, and Population Sector' presents specific policy options for Afghanistan's Ministry of Public Health to consider in advancing to the next level of care for its population. The guiding principles of these options are consistency with the ministry's vision and the feasibility of implementation. The specific challenges include revising the content of the basic package of health services (BPHS), rethinking the delivery of the BPHS, securing sustained and predictable financing, defining the role of the emerging private sector, addressing the shortage of human resources for health, and expanding the capacity of the ministry to enable it to effectively carry out its stewardship functions. This book was prepared as a resource for policy makers, practitioners, and researchers in Afghanistan and other conflict-affected countries. It emphasizes the policy implications of the findings presented.

Описание: This graduate text is the first to present methods for modelling health behaviour dynamics, using numerous online interactive simulations, downloadable programs, and examples of applications to planning interventions. The book examines behaviours that range from simple individual health protective actions to complex cooperative public health actions. It provides a user-friendly and effective method for teaching systems thinking, a core competency now required by the Association of Schools of Public Health.

The text presents evolutionary and ecological models of health behaviour, which readers first explore using interactive online simulations. The fundamental principles of these models are explained through the book's narrative and demonstrated through the use of simple board games. The text then shows how to translate these board games into computational models using Netlogo, a free, user-friendly software. Thus no computer programming background is required. Readers will learn the basics of agent-based modelling of individual behaviour, social network behaviour, organisational behaviour, spread of disease, and a variety of public health interventions. Applying these methods to public health systems, sample models introduce the dynamics of networks of organisations and how they can interact to protect health. A unifying theme throughout is how complex individual and collective health behaviour develop from simple individual health decisions or behaviour repeated over time. The book also includes a student's models at successive stages of learning, including her early-stage incorrect program, which readers can themselves try to correct. Students will learn to create their own models, use them to conduct simulated experiments, and apply these methods to planning and evaluating behaviour change interventions. Each chapter provides online interactive models and downloadable sample programs.

Key Features:

Uses interactive simulation for modelling health behaviour dynamics for complex public health systems

Demonstrates agent-based modelling of individual health behaviour, network behaviour, public health intervention effects, and the spread of disease

Teaches readers to create models that can improve their local needs assessments, program logic modelling, and program planning and evaluation

Includes numerous interactive online simulations, downloadable programs, and examples of applications to planning interventions

Facilitates ""systems thinking,"" a required core competency
