Описание:

Savant and splinter skills are seen in memory, art, music or spatial skill amongst others. They can appear remarkable, but tend to be seen as 'obsessive' behaviors. "Exploring Giftedness and Autism" is based on a unique study which introduces and explores a differentiated curriculum and presents a combination of strategies employed in the education of gifted children and autistic children. Providing insights on the obsessive nature of savant skills, the challenging behaviors of savants and the familial link between the subject child s savant abilities and giftedness, the author highlights how the inclusion of this curriculum is critical in promoting better school performance and post-school employment opportunities.

The study has demonstrated the importance of using a strengths rather than a deficits approach in the education of students with a disability, and regards autistic savants as gifted students with disabilities, or as twice-exceptional students with autism. With a practical section dedicated to putting the research into practice this book is an incredibly important read for anyone working with gifted young people with disabilities in the classroom."

Описание: This book contains two parts. The first part, Chapters 1 to 14 provide a systematic insight into key aspects of gifted students starting from different approaches to defining giftedness, then identifying the gifted, their role in the society, gender differences, socio-emotional development, mentoring gifted students, creating an optimal environment for their development, evaluating the work of the gifted, underachievement of the gifted, methods and programs of working with the gifted, use of modern technologies in teaching gifted students, and training of teachers to work with the gifted population. The second part of the manuscript includes a case study, or empirical research on the development of students gifted in mathematics. The research method is explained first, including a description of the participants and data collection instruments. The research conducted is a case study showing the development of gifted mathematicians both in schools and in the family environment, from early childhood to higher education. The research includes many factors in the family environment such as: socio-economic and educational status of parents, learning conditions, number of children in the family, parents assistance with school obligations, parents reaction to childrens successes and failures, punishment, etc. The research also includes many in-school factors that could have a positive or negative, motivating or restraining effect on the development of the mathematical gift of the respondents. Some of these factors are: identification of the gifted, methods of working with them, rewards, punishments, programs of working with them, teacher-student relations, and the like. In addition to the development of respondents in the family and school environments, their motivation was also investigated. Based on the interviews conducted with the respondents, the factors that induced our respondents to develop into mathematically gifted students were presented. The development of students gifted in mathematics is also described on the basis of the analysis of their pedagogical documentation, through which their abilities outside mathematics were determined, along with whether there were any crucial moments that had a positive or negative effect on them, i.e. their mathematical development. Finally, the results of the research were summarized and the factors that could have contributed to the mathematical gift of the respondents were listed. Moreover, certain recommendations are given to parents and teachers for more efficient work with the gifted population.

The text helps readers better understand how to work with children who are exceptional in the general classroom and how to apply strategies for teaching them in an inclusive environment.

The anthology is divided into three distinct parts. The readings in Part I address special education and the law, and feature discussions regarding laws that impact students with disabilities, the emergence of special and inclusive education in the United States, and perspectives on IQ, ability, and eugenics. Part 2 focuses on differentiated instruction. Readers engage with articles about role-playing in an inclusive classroom, technology as a differentiated instruction tool, peer mediation, assessment to enhance student learning, and more. In the final part, readers further develop their understanding of universal design for learning (UDL). The articles address how to assist students with reading disabilities, the three-block model for UDL, and how to help English language learners cultivate greater literacy.

Featuring contemporary research and approaches, Differentiating Instruction for Learners with Special Needs is an ideal supplementary resource for courses and programs in education, especially those with focus on special education.
