Описание: There is a lot that we don`t know. That means there are a lot of possibilities that are, epistemically speaking, open. What are these epistemic possibilities? How do we understand the semantics of epistemic modals? Ten new essays explore various answers to these questions, including those offered by contextualism, relativism, and expressivism.

Описание: This monograph provides a novel reliabilist approach to epistemic responsibility assessment. The author presents unique arguments for the epistemic significance of belief-influencing actions and omissions. She grounds her proposal in indirect doxastic control. The book consists of four chapters. The first two chapters look at the different ways in which an agent might control the revision, retention, or rejection of her beliefs. They provide a systematic overview of the different approaches to doxastic control and contain a thorough study of reasons-responsive approaches to direct and indirect doxastic control. The third chapter provides a reliabilist approach to epistemic responsibility assessment which is based on indirect doxastic control. In the fourth chapter, the author examines epistemic peer disagreement and applies her reliabilist approach to epistemic responsibility assessment to this debate. She argues that the epistemic significance of peer disagreement does not only rely on the way in which an agent should revise her belief in the face of disagreement, it also relies on the way in which an agent should act. This book deals with questions of meliorative epistemology in general and with questions concerning doxastic responsibility and epistemic responsibility assessment in particular. It will appeal to graduate students and researchers with an interest in epistemology.

Описание:

The field of rhetoric and composition has, at last, received a long lost message delivered in the form of Victor J. Vitanza's seminar on James A. Berlin. In this book that is an untext on Berlin's work and its impact on the field, Vitanza acquaints us with Berlin by virtue of many Berlins, in multiplicity, and via the figure of an "excluded third" that wants to deliver to us a new message that was undelivered from Berlin to us, and from Vitanza to Berlin, after Berlin's untimely death in 1994. A seminar on a seminar on the teaching of writing . . . it is teaching all the way down. They met at the historical NEH seminar at Carnegie Mellon in 1978. Their friendship and rhetorical dialogues spanned only sixteen years, but Vitanza continues the conversation through the seminar, through this book (rife with reflections and, yes, homework for his readers), and through our reception of it. It is up to us now to carry it forward. As Vitanza writes, "I would prefer not to not think that what remains unsaid stays undelivered."

-Cynthia Haynes, author of The Homesick Phonebook:

Addressing Rhetorics in the Age of Perpetual Conflict

Victor J. Vitanza is Professor Emeritus of English and founding director of the PhD transdisciplinary program in Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design at Clemson University. Vitanza is the author of Negation, Subjectivity, and the History of Rhetoric (1997) and Sexual Violence in Western Thinking and Writing: Chaste Rape (2011). He has edited and contributed to PRE/TEXT: The First Decade and Writing Histories of Rhetoric, among many other books and journals. He founded PRE/TEXT in 1983 and has been its editor ever since.

Описание:

A Critical Introduction to the Metaphysics of Modality examines the eight main contemporary theories of possibility behind a central metaphysical topic. Covering modal skepticism, modal expressivism, modalism, modal realism, ersatzism, modal fictionalism, modal agnosticism, and the new modal actualism, this comprehensive introduction to modality places contemporary debates in an historical context.

Beginning with a historical overview, Andrea Borghini discusses Parmenides and Zeno; looks at how central Medieval authors such as Aquinas, and Buridan prepared the ground for the Early Modern radical views of Leibniz, Spinoza, and Hume and discusses advancements in semantics in the later-half of the twentieth century a resulted in the rise of modal metaphysics, the branch characterizing the past few decades of philosophical reflection. Framing the debate according to three main perspectives - logical, epistemic, metaphysical- Borghini provides the basic concepts and terms required to discuss modality.

With suggestions of further reading and end-of-chapter study questions, A Critical Introduction to the Metaphysics of Modality is an up-to-date resource for students working in contemporary metaphysics seeking a better understanding of this crucial topic.
