Описание: Justice and the Just War Tradition articulates a distinctive understanding of the reasons that can justify war, of the reasons that cannot justify war, and of the role that those reasons should play in the motivational and attitudinal lives of the citizens, soldiers, and statesmen who participate in war. Eberle does so by relying on a robust conception of human worth, rights, and justice. He locates this theoretical account squarely in the Just War Tradition. But his account is not merely theoretical: Justice and the Just War Tradition has a variety of practical aims, one of the most important of which is to serve as an aid to moral formation. The hope is that citizens, soldiers, and statesmen whose emotions and aspirations have been shaped by the Just War Tradition will be able to negotiate violent communal conflict in ways that respect the demands of justice. So Justice and the Just War Tradition articulates a theoretically satisfying and practically engaging account of the reasons that count in favor of war. Moreover, Eberle develops that account by engaging contemporary theorists, both philosophical and theological, by according due deference to venerable contributors to the Just War Tradition, and by integrating insights from military memoire, the history of war, and the author's experience of teaching ethics at the United States Naval Academy.

Описание:
America and the Just War Tradition examines and evaluates each of America’s major wars from a just war perspective. Using moral analysis that is anchored in the just war tradition, the contributors provide careful historical analysis evaluating individual conflicts.
Each chapter explores the causes of a particular war, the degree to which the justice of the conflict was a subject of debate at the time, and the extent to which the war measured up to traditional ad bellum and in bello criteria. Where appropriate, contributors offer post bellum considerations, insofar as justice is concerned with helping to offer a better peace and end result than what had existed prior to the conflict.
This fascinating exploration offers policy guidance for the use of force in the world today, and will be of keen interest to historians, political scientists, philosophers, and theologians, as well as policy makers and the general reading public.

Описание: Opening with materialism`s early thinkers, including Epicurus, Hobbes and Hume up to Darwin and Marx, Brown and Ladyman explain how materialism`s beginnings as imaginative vision of the true natures and properties of things faced a major challenge from modern physics, in the form of quantum theory and the general theory of relativity.
Описание: Although little known, Richard Price’s A Review of the Principal Questions in Morals (1758) is one of the most important texts of eighteenth-century moral philosophy. Hastings Rasdhall described it “as the best work published on Ethics till quite recent times” because it “contains the gist of the kantian doctrine without Kant’s confusions”; C. D. Broad pointed out in this regard that “until Ross published his book The Right and the Good in 1930” there existed “no statement and defence of what may be called the ‘rationalistic type’ of ethical theory comparable in merit to Price’s”; and W. D. Hudson considered A Review to be “probably the best statement of the case for rational intuitionism which has ever been written”. The current volume aims to demonstrate, through a rigorous analysis of the text itself, the full validity of these previous evaluations, highlighting in particular that in the Review it is possible to find many of the traits that characterize the ethical reflection of our own times, such as the need to focus attention on the meaning of terms in order to clarify and resolve disputes; the identification of different levels and types of investigation and the need to keep them separate; the thesis that moral judgments are not definable in non-moral terms; the criticism of all forms of normative monism; the non-absolute nature of ethical principles; the need to distinguish the moral properties of the agent from those of action. Focusing on details, we owe to Price the distinction between meta-ethics and normative ethics, as well as the first systematic application of the open question argument, (the argument by which in the twentieth century all attempts to reduce moral concepts to non-moral concepts have been accused of failing into the “naturalistic fallacy”). But it also provides a model for critiquing utilitarianism that has found great fortune in contemporary moral philosophy; an early intuition of the status of prima facie or pro tanto duties of basic ethical principles; the distinction between what is subjectively right and what is objectively right. Despite being much less famous, Price’s Review can stand up to comparison with the greatest classics of eighteenthth-century Anglo-Saxon ethics, such as Hume’s Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals or Adam Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments.

Описание:
In recent decades, green chemistry dominated the imagination of sustainability scholars all over the world and was embraced by leading global universities and companies. This new concept is supposed to address the environmental crisis by making chemistry safer and less polluting.
And yet, under this seemingly straightforward success story hides a tangled and ambiguous reality: alternative frameworks, shoddy greenness criteria, and power struggles.
This book retraces the history of the green chemistry concept and critically assesses its claims and dominant narratives about it. It is an indispensable guide for all those interested in the challenges of sustainability, whether they have background in chemistry or not. Its underlying question is: is green chemistry really that green?
