Описание: This book is a study of the multiple meanings of European citizenship, which has been represented and publicly communicated by the European Commission in five distinctive ways – Homo Oeconomicus (1951-1972), A People's Europe (1973-1992), Europe of Transparency (1993-2004), Europe of Agorai (2005-2009) and Europe of Rights (2010-2014). The public communication of these five distinct representations of European citizenship reveal how the European Commission conceived of and attempted to facilitate the development of a Civil Europe. Ultimately this history, which is based upon an analysis of public communication policy papers and interviews with senior European Commission officials past and present, tells a story about changing identities and about who we as Europeans might actually be and what kind of Europe we might actually belong to.

Arguing that recovery can only take place if the citizens of Europe regard themselves as members of a socially integrated European society, this volume sets out three conditions for successful European social integration:
European citizens mutually respect each other as equals, accepting that all EU citizens should have equal economic, political and social rights.
Those citizens objecting to the idea of European equality should not constitute a minority with potential for mobilisation that could impede the ongoing process of European social integration.
Europeans act upon their equality beliefs in everyday practice - without differentiating between nationals and EU migrants.
Based on a survey carried out in Germany, Spain, Poland and Turkey, the authors argue that the requirements for a socially integrated Europe are largely in place already. Their findings allow for optimism regarding the future of the EU, as the cultural foundations for a democratisation of Europe are laid.
This volume develops a theoretical framework of a socially integrated European community, and will be useful for students and scholars of sociology, citizenship studies, social policy, political science and European studies.

In much social scientific literature, Polish civil society has been portrayed as weak and passive. This volume offers a much-needed corrective, challenging this characterization on both theoretical and empirical grounds and suggesting new ways of conceptualizing civil society to better account for events on the ground as well as global trends such as neoliberalism, migration, and the renewal of nationalist ideologies. Описание: With the establishment of the EU, the goals and policies pursued through European Communities, and the targets and policies covered by new action areas, which include Economic and Monetary Union, European Citizenship, Common Security and Foreign Policy which will be progressed gradually by European Union treaty, have started to be addressed as a whole. The identity of the EU at the global level has also experienced change. In this context, the EU represents a political structure on its own, with its institu-tions, activities and authority, which constitute a supranational structure. Of course, it is not possible to say that this process continues without any problems and disputes. However, when we look at the development process of the EU, it is seen that this change and the transformation continue in the context of the requirements and the process continues dynamically. In this context, this study includes other studies discussing the developments of the EU in different policy spaces. In these studies, it has been examined whether EU policies have an impact on national structures, practices and actors and if there is, how and under what conditions this has become clear.
