Описание: Representing a sustained engagement with the thought of Deleuze and Guattari, covering more than two decades and on a wide range of topics, from aesthetics and literature to capitalism and Marxism, Kenneth Surin takes politics as the thematic thread to this collection.
Deleuze and Guattari: Selected Writings tackles both central political issues, such as the State, globalization, and the citizen, as well as the political qualities of topics generally considered outside this realm, such as the animal, the image, and the literary. Surins pursues theoretical interventions inspired by Deleuze and Guattari's scholarship in relation to Marxism and specifically materialism and notions of political solidarity, which they did not engage with extensively or explicitly themselves, but which extend their critique along new lines of flight.
This book demonstrates the breadth and lasting relevance of Deleuze’s and Guattari's legacy by tracing the affinities between Deleuze and both Marxist sociologist, Antonio Negri, and Raymond Williams, one of the founders of cultural studies as a discipline.
Автор: Hanley Ryan Patrick Название: The Political Philosophy of Fйnelon ISBN: 0190079630 ISBN-13(EAN): 9780190079635 Издательство: Oxford Academ Рейтинг: Цена: 16162.00 р. Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ.
Описание: Fnelon was a nuanced and influential diagnostician of the ills of European society, one who carefully analysed phenomena as wide-ranging and complex as egocentrism, authoritarianism, and imperialism. Despite his influence there has been to date no interpretive monograph in English devoted specifically to his thought. Ryan Patrick Hanley aims to correct this oversight, providing the first book-length interpretative study of Fnelon's writings to appear in English. A companion volume to Hanley's comprehensive English translation of Fnelon's moral and political writings, this book focuses on Fnelon's political thought as a method of understanding his impact on areas ranging from economics and statecraft to religion and literature. Hanley begins by reconstructing Fnelon's political ideas for those who may be encountering his work directly or at length for the first time. He then articulates the connections between Fnelon's political thought and several other fields to which he made significant and long-recognized contributions, including not only philosophy and political science, but also economics, education, literature, theology, and spirituality. Building from this foundation, Hanley constructs a new understanding and appreciation of Fnelon's political thought and its significance. He argues that Fnelon is better understood as a moderate and modern thinker rather than as a radical or reactionary, and that Fnelon deserves to be seen not merely as a political thinker but as a political philosopher, one whose work has direct relevance to our political world today.

Описание: Authorship is a complicated subject in Kierkegaard's work, which he surely recognized, given his late attempts to explain himself in On My Work as an Author. From the use of multiple pseudonyms and antonyms, to contributions across a spectrum of media and genres, issues of authorship abound. Why did Kierkegaard write in the ways he did? Before we assess Kierkegaard’s famous thoughts on faith or love, or the relationship between 'the aesthetic,' 'the ethical,' and 'the religious,' we must approach how he expressed them. Given the multi-authored nature of his works, can we find a view or voice that is definitively Kierkegaard’s own? Can entries in his unpublished journals and notebooks tell us what Kierkegaard himself thought? How should contemporary readers understand inconsistencies or contradictions between differently named authors? We cannot make definitive claims about Kierkegaard’s work as a thinker without understanding Kierkegaard’s work as an author. This collection, by leading contemporary Kierkegaard scholars, is the first to systematically examine the divisive question and practice of authorship in Kierkegaard from philosophical, literary and theological perspectives.
What might common sense be? Is it a mental capacity? Or does it consist of just truisms and precepts? If the latter is the case, is this knowledge innate or empirical? Or is it like "human nature"-a term that has played its role in rhetoric, but that does not appear to have a definite, agreed-upon meaning? Indeed we can learn a great deal about some of the most influential modern philosophers, from the Enlightenment to Ludwig Wittgenstein and W.V.O. Quine, by examining what they have to say about common sense, whilst the anthropologist Clifford Geertz observed that common sense "has become a central category, almost the central category, in a wide range of modern philosophical systems."
This book investigates the nature of common sense through a selection of key writings on epistemology, the philosophy of science, the philosophy of religion, meta-ethics and the philosophy of economics and political philosophy. The authors included are representative of the Scottish School, such as David Hume, the Ordinary Language School, and members of the Analytic tradition, including Karl Popper, but they also incorporate thinkers like John Dewey from the American pragmatist tradition, the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci, recent popular writers on economics, and even pamphleteers, from Thomas Paine to contemporary engaged journalists.
This is the first reader to provide such a comprehensive overview of the central writings on common sense. It features review questions and further reading lists at the end of each section.

Описание: In Nietzsche's Search for Philosophy: On the Middle Writings Keith Ansell-Pearson makes a novel and thought-provoking contribution to our appreciation of Nietzsche's neglected middle writings. These are the texts Human, all too Human (1878-80), Dawn (1881), and The Gay Science (1882). There is a truth in the observation of Havelock Ellis that the works Nietzsche produced between 1878 and 1882 represent the maturity of his genius.
In this study he explores key aspects of Nietzsche's philosophical activity in his middle writings, including his conceptions of philosophy, his commitment to various enlightenments, his critique of fanaticism, his search for the heroic-idyllic, his philosophy of modesty and his conception of ethics, and his search for joy and happiness. The book will appeal to readers across philosophy and the humanities, especially to those with an interest in Nietzsche and anyone who has a concern with the fate of philosophy in the modern world.
Описание: John Brown (17151766) was a clergyman who achieved great but transient fame as a writer and moralist. His attack on Shaftesbury and moral sense philosophy, against which he employed utilitarian arguments and also arguments deriving from Gods benevolent intentions toward his creation, was published in 1751 and was later praised by John Stuart Mill. The central text of this volume, An Estimate of the Manners and Principles of the Times (1757), is a vigorous attack on the vain, luxurious, and selfish effeminacy of Englands higher ranks, in the wake of the loss of Minorca to the French at the opening of the Seven Years War (17561763). Brown repeated the usual complaints of corruption that had been raised during the premiership of Walpole and argued that public virtue had been undermined by a preoccupation with luxury and commerce. Estimate was printed no fewer than seven times within the first year, earning the author the name Estimate Brown. Alongside Estimate, the volume includes four other works by Brown: his poem On Liberty (1749); his Essays on the Characteristicks (1751), which is an attack on Shaftesburys Characteristicks; his Explanatory Defence of the Estimate (1758), in which Brown engaged to defend the work, to some modest extent, against his critics; and finally, a late work, Thoughts on Civil Liberty (1765). Two appendixes complement the texts: a brief tribute to Brown by Thomas Hollis (an Englishman who devoted his life to the cause of liberty and for whom this series is named), in which Hollis depicts Brown as a weak man who nevertheless possessed a measure of virtue and talent, and who fell among thieves in the feral literary and political circles of Hanoverian England. The second appendix provides Holliss own annotations to his copy of Estimate. The introduction, by David Womersley, places Browns writings and career in the context of eighteenth-century moralism and, naturally, in the tradition of British writing on liberty. The annotations will gloss now-unfamiliar words and explain now-obscure references to contemporary events, circumstances, and personalities.
