Описание:
Film noir has been understood as a genre exclusive to Hollywood. But classical US noir's downbeat sensibility also finds expression in later films from Japan, South Korea and greater China (including Hong Kong) and Taiwan that have both participated in and been excluded from circuits of global-noir traffic, past and present. Noir is a form of generic expression, an international filmic sensibility and a discourse loosely joining innumerable texts and a range of production and reception phenomena. However defined and categorized, the genre offers a compelling frame through which to view individual works, looming political and cultural contexts, film industry and reception activity, and wider circuits and frictions of global screen-media flow.
This anthology looks at a range of East Asian films from the 1950s to the present - including The Crimson Kimono, Brother, Ghost in the Shell, Nowhere to Hide, Duelist- and Rebels of the Neon God - that have been explicitly framed as film noir or East Asian noir, or that acquire legibility as noir texts through reception discourse and other critical activity. Contributors look at historical and contemporary cases to understand the terms on which national, regional and transnational cinemas conceive artistic expression. Their conceptualization and articulation of an internationally situated 'East Asian film noir' helps raise questions around the politics of representation, authorial activity, generic and modal positioning and local and cross-cultural reception.
Описание: Building upon the author's integrative and interactive ideas about human services fields, this book presents an intercultural perspective of social work education, practice, and research with culturally-linguistically-relationally underprivileged minority groups in the local and global communities, to show how the synthesis of theories from postmodern social constructionism, multiculturalism, and international organization empowerment can be applied when working with Asian immigrant families. This book also demonstrates how a mutual development model of intercultural organizational-institutional collaborative partnership can be relevant when providing an International Experience for Human Services Abroad Course. Author Kui-Hee Song uses in-depth case studies in the culturally linguistic and diverse context of human services fields and in the cross-nationally interactive context of host country human services organizations and home university academic administrations. Kui-Hee Song examines the clinical change process of a Korean immigrant family that is working with Child Protective Services, seeking to resolve physical child abuse problems and generate new meanings in parent-child relationships through therapeutic conversational dialogue. As the new to this edition, a case of Ming's story is especially, the cultural differences between the Chinese immigrant client family and American medical setting where practitioner's personal beliefs were challenged. Kui-Hee Song critically examines specific steps to take in establishing intercultural service learning field placements for an experiential learning education abroad course. Song explores the significant leadership roles and responsibilities of host country human services organizations and home university administrators involved with making a new international human services experience abroad program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Specially, Song provides a profound understanding of the empowerment process of a Korean family: a conversational partnership in dialogue that invites the clients to speak their loud-hitherto unheard-voices and enhance a personal perception of competency for action and hope. Song also gives a thoughtful comprehension of a mutual empowerment process of cross-national collaborative partners: differential responsibilities but mutually shared power, vision, and goals in working relationship that allows for each collaborator to stand together in unity of transactional and transformational leadership behaviors and strengthens the sustainability of the effective international human services experience abroad program.

"Approaches to the Study of Intercultural Transfer" presents a collection of compelling case studies in the area of social reform, museums, philanthropy, football, nonviolent resistance and holiday rituals such as Christmas that demonstrate key mechanisms of intercultural transfers. Each chapter provides the application of the intercultural transfer studies paradigm to a specific and distinct historical phenomenon. These chapters not only illustrate the presence or even the depth and frequency of intercultural transfer, but they also reveal specific aspects of the intercultural transfer of phenomena, the role of agents of intercultural transfer and the transformations of ideas transferred between cultures thereby, contributing to our understanding of the mechanisms of intercultural transfers.
The transfers explored in this volume provide for a narrative of an interconnected world in which societies and cultures exchanged ideas and objects over long distances connecting places and spaces across the globe and contributing to the creation of distinct local cultures and societies. Ideas about social reform and customs such as the Christmas tree were transferred across political and geographic borders. In the process, they were modified to fit into the receiving society. They lost some of their meaning and received new meaning. The Pagan symbol of the Christmas tree was Christianized through its transfer from cities such as Dresden to cities such as Boston.
Concepts such as Gandhi's nonviolent resistance appealed to many Western observers who considered peaceful and rational conflict solution in the aftermath of World War I as essential to the survival of humankind. The appeal of nonviolent resistance did not result in a full grasp of such phenomena. Western observers misunderstood and mistranslated Satyagraha with passive resistance. Such modifications reveal the nature of intercultural transfer. In this process, the power of adopting a new idea rests with the receiving society. The giving society has little influence over the transfer process and loses control over the transfer fairly early. This contributed to the conundrum of the modern world which, in spite of the multitude of such transfers, became not only more similar but also more dissimilar.
Описание: Looks at disciple-making from multiple cultures to help readers discover contextual approaches that are culturally relevant and biblically faithful.
Описание: Drawing on interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives, this book critically examines intercultural theory and its interrelations with globalisation, education and dialogue in multicultural societies.
Описание: How do we know the other culture? How do such inquiries impact on our knowledge of our own culture? These questions lie at the heart of comparative intercultural studies. As a theoretical inquiry into how conceptual resources of cultures (such as explicit and implicit categories of thought) may pre-figure our perspectives, this book re-conceives and reorients comparative intercultural inquiry by arguing for the importance of an epistemological approach and for its potential to transform current critical paradigms, in contrast to approaches that emphasize primarily the political and the ethical. By critically engaging with and developing the insights of scholars and thinkers from both Anglo-American and Continental traditions, the book makes a significant meta-critical contribution to a rethinking of comparative intercultural studies and literary theory. It will be of interest to students and scholars in comparative literature, English, world literature, and global and translation studies.
This book examines transcultural processes between the Eurasian and Inner-Carpathian worlds in the Aeneolithic and Early Bronze Age from the perspectives of archaeology, history, anthropology, ethnology, art and philosophy. Based on archaeological sources, the authors reconstruct the character, extent, time and space of possible migration-invasive movements of communities from the East to central Europe. Archaeology of migration focuses primarily on the growing base of cultural attributes and identifiers that cannot be attributed to local prehistoric communities. They also can help analyse the multiple layers of prehistoric processes and complex prehistoric social phenomena. The book presents the authors’ reflections on the subject, based on artefacts of foreign origin that appear in the communities of the Inner North-Western Carpathians at the turn of the early Metal periods.
Описание: This open access book analyses intercultural dialogue as a concept, policy and ideal in European education policy documentation. The core European transnational organizatons - the Council of Europe and the European Union - have actively promoted policies to engender inclusive societies and respond to challenges that diversification may entail.
