Описание: The First Washington Conference, codenamed Arcadia, was a secret meeting held in the days immediately following the entrance of the United States into World War II. It was the first meeting between the United States and Britain to determine military strategy. Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and their top military advisors spent hours making major decisions that would determine the direction of the Allied war effort. The main achievement of the conference was the 'Europe first' decision, declaring that the defeat of Germany was the highest priority.

Neither side knew what to expect before this momentous meeting. Before the war, the British and the Americans had differing strategic concerns, especially about the Pacific and East Asia: differences of such contrast that the conference was in jeopardy of ending early if not resolved. The narrative uses a chronological approach that examines in detail each day of the conference. This day-by-day methodology shows the gradual development of rapport between the allied chieftains, why and how it forged relationships, and the undercurrent of tension as each ally sought to ensure its national interests while cooperating with the other in a grand alliance.

Historian and retired Brigadier General John F. Shortal skillfully unravels the inside story of this pivotal meeting. He shows how the working and personal relationships between Roosevelt and Churchill, as well as their military chiefs of staffs, first took root and then blossomed during the conference. Code Name Arcadia makes a major contribution not only to the history of World War II, but also to our understanding of the power structure of the postwar world.

Описание: The Complete Writings and Selected Correspondence of John Dickinson, vol. 1 inaugurates a multivolume documentary edition that will, for the first time ever, provide the complete collection of everything Dickinson published on public affairs over the course of his life. The documents include essays, articles, broadsides, resolutions, petitions, declarations, constitutions, regulations, legislation, proclamations, songs and odes. Among them are many of the seminal state papers produced by the first national congresses and conventions. Also included are correspondences between Dickinson and some of the key figures of his era. This edition should raise Dickinson to his rightful place among America's founding fathers, rivaled in reputation only by Benjamin Franklin before 1776. Dickinson was celebrated throughout the colonies, as well as in England and France, as the great American spokesman for liberty, and the documents in this edition evidence his tireless political work and unmatched corpus.

Описание:

Nathan Bedford Forrest is best known for his role as a Confederate officer in the American War for Southern Independence. While most Forrest biographies discuss his military career in great detail, what they do not provide is the General's own perspective of the conflict. In his one-of-a-kind book, Give 'Em Hell Boys Forrest scholar, Forrest relation, and award-winning author Lochlainn Seabrook handily remedies this situation.

Neatly divided into five sections for each year of Lincoln's War, as the subtitle indicates, the book encompasses all of the General's military correspondence, from 1861 to 1865. In the 300 fascinating footnoted entries included, we find Forrest's reports, dispatches, orders, returns, letters, notes, communiques, and telegrams, as he himself wrote or dictated them, usually from the battlefield. His missives were sent out to a wide assortment of Civil War figures, from the president of the Confederacy (Jefferson Davis) and fellow Confederate officers to his Yankee enemies, most of the communications with the latter which ended with unsurprising results: immediate surrender Through Forrest's own words, we are able to track not only the progress of the War, but his rise from private to lieutenant general (one rank shy of full general)-the only man on either side to achieve such a feat.

Included along with a bibliography and an index are such extras as a historical time line of the highlights of Forrest's life, a list of all of Forrest's engagements, and a section on his recognition by the Confederate Congress. Like the author's other works on Forrest, Give 'Em Hell Boys (named after one of his most famous war cries) will help destroy the many anti-South myths surrounding the General, giving him back his rightful place as a lauded American icon. Learn about both Forrest the man and the Rebel officer from the great Confederate chieftain himself, in this captivating read that is sure to become a standard in Civil War literature.

Civil War scholar Lochlainn Seabrook, a descendant of the families of Alexander H. Stephens and John S. Mosby, is the most prolific and popular pro-South writer in the world today. Known as the "new Shelby Foote," he is a recipient of the prestigious Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal and the author of over 50 books that have introduced hundreds of thousands to the truth about the War for Southern Independence. A seventh-generation Kentuckian of Appalachian heritage and the sixth great-grandson of the Earl of Oxford, Colonel Seabrook has a forty-year background in American and Southern history, and is the author of the international blockbuster Everything You Were Taught About the Civil War is Wrong, Ask a Southerner

His other titles include: The Great Yankee Coverup: What the North Doesn't Want You to Know About Lincoln's War; Confederacy 101: Amazing Facts You Never Knew About America's Oldest Political Tradition; Confederate Flag Facts: What Every American Should Know About Dixie's Southern Cross; Women in Gray: A Tribute to the Ladies Who Supported the Southern Confederacy; Everything You Were Taught About American Slavery is Wrong, Ask a Southerner ; The Constitution of the Confederate States of America Explained; A Rebel Born: A Defense of Nathan Bedford Forrest; The Quotable Nathan Bedford Forrest; Slavery 101: Amazing Facts You Never Knew About America's "Peculiar Institution"; Confederate Blood and Treasure: An Interview With Lochlainn Seabrook; Abraham Lincoln: The Southern View; The Unquotable Abraham Lincoln; Give This Book to a Yankee: A Southern Guide to the Civil War for Northerners; and Honest Jeff and Dishonest Abe: A Southern Children's Guide to the Civil War.

Описание:

This is the story of the great coalition formed by the United States, Great Britain, and Soviet Russia to combat the Axis in World War II. Mr. Feis traces the ideas and purposes that governed each member of this alliance, and the gradual separation between the West and Russia as victory over Germany was achieved. While adding new information and new interpretation, Mr. Feis comprehends this one war and three wills as a whole, relating diplomacy and strategy to each other against the background of circumstance. The acts and characteristics of the dominating figures--Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin--emerge in new historical perspective as the story tells what they did and why. The narrative begins early in 1941 as the coalition is emerging and ends after the collapse of Germany in 1945. Among the dements arc: the early grasping of the Soviet government for territorial claims; the continuous discussion over strategy; the dramatic difficulties with the Soviet authorities over control of Italy, Poland, and Rumania; the variations in the plans for Germany, including dismemberment; the Casablanca, Moscow, Cairo, Teheran, and Yalta conferences; the spreading disquiet over Soviet intentions in Europe and the Far East.
