What's the Matter with Liberals is a response to Thomas Frank's 2004 book What's the Matter with Kansas. I ask the same question he asked about the right, but about the left: Why is the media obsessed with racism, even though it's getting objectively better by every measure we have? I argue that the liberal media is mainstreaming a woke culture war based on ideas that were relegated to the academic fringe as recently as a decade ago because it's in their economic interests to do so.
As American journalism has gone from a working-class trade to an elite caste, it has abandoned the economic fight of the little guy in favor of a culture war that protects its own financial interests while masquerading as social justice. On the business side, digital media pressures and social media rewards combined to make a woke culture war the perfect displacement exercise. This is how you end up with the New York Times putting Angela Davis on the cover and a Cartier ad on the back; these are two sides of the same coin, a culture war that benefits elites packaged as moral truth and journalistic ethics. The book begins by delving into the golden age of American journalism in the 19th century, when people like Joseph Pulitzer created a press that was by and for the working class. It then explores the status revolution in American journalism that took place over the 21st century, when journalism went from being a blue-collar trade to an elite caste. It explores how digital media and social media supplied journalists, now part of the American elite, with an alternative way to feel like heroes while further consolidating power and wealth in the hands of the few rather than the many. The book then explores the larger context of the great American class divide, and how journalism has been both a product and accelerator of inequality.

Описание: The Fake News Panic of a Century Ago: The Discovery of Propaganda and the Coercion of Consent looks at how the sharing of public information has changed over time—and especially at the dramatic transformation that took place in the media world in the early decades of the 20th century.
Just as the term "fake news" has recently exploded into public consciousness, so did the concept of propaganda a century ago. The book describes two major developments that contributed to the "discovery" of propaganda in the decades just before and after the First World War. The first was a shift in the landscape of human psychology, emphasizing the role of the irrational impulses in human behavior and renewing age old fears of the herd mentality and the rise of the emotional mob. The second was a social upheaval, as the stability of trustworthy local communities faded and distant powers and faraway voices began to dominate public discourse.
Many thoughtful observers feared that growing power of some voices meant that public consent could actually be coerced—eroding the basic concept of democratic government. Others persisted in trusting the basic rationality of public opinion. Still others struggled to find ways in which responsible leaders could guide the public without manipulating it.
This book explores the writings of six well-known American leaders of the time—influential representatives of the political, business, journalistic and academic worlds—who wrestled seriously with the implications of these developments. The text underscores how their commentaries of a century ago can offer helpful insight into what has been happening in our contemporary world.
The Fake News Panic of a Century Ago is an excellent supplementary resource for courses in social and intellectual history, media studies, and political theory.
Описание: The world has changed dramatically since the emergence of post-Marxism, and a reassessment is needed to determine its significance in the modern world.
First published as a special issue of Global Discourse, this book explores the theoretical position of post-Marxism and investigates its significance in recent global political developments such as Brexit, Trump and the rise of the far right. With valuable insights from international contributors across a range of disciplines, the book puts forward a strong case for the continuing relevance of post-Marxism and, particularly, for Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s theory of radical democracy.

In the third decade of the 21st century, Europe is facing several serious challenges to its prosperity and freedom. Those include economic, financial and productive decline compared to the rest of the world, demographic stagnation, the effects of climate change, energy dependence from other continents and exclusion from technological innovations.
This book proposes the creation of a federal European state that would replace and succeed the EU, its member states and other willing European countries. This is the only way for Europe to successfully address all those challenges and stay at centre stage in world affairs, in the century of globalization, climate change and the fourth industrial revolution. But addressing Europe’s existential challenges is not the only reason to move in that direction. A federal Europe would also become a major, self-sufficient geopolitical power, as strong as orstronger than the USA, Russia or China. It would be a model for other regional federations around the planet.
The book is not restricted to the analysis of why we need a federal European state but further suggests substantial policies for many different sectors: economy, banking, foreign affairs, defence, education, health, social security, immigration, human rights, agriculture, fourth industrial revolution, circular economy and climate – to name some of them. At the end, it presents a rough budget estimation to show that such a federation would not only be desirable but also be feasible.
Описание: This book is about the radical novelty of modern polities in a functionally differentiated world society. Premodern states were at the apex of a stratified, hierarchical society. They dominated society and all its groups and strata. Modern polities have to be understood through the ecology of relations among different function systems. They have to find and incessantly redefine their place in society. They produce decisions that are collectively binding, but in preparing these decisions experience constraints and knowledge deficiencies that are related to the complexity of a functionally differentiated society. The book concentrates on six analytical perspectives that reflect how modern polities are embedded into 21st century society. These perspectives are: the concept of inclusion and the inclusion revolution constitutive of modern polities; the internal differentiation of polities that endows them with an unprecedented complexity; the fact that polities do not know anything about society and the ways in which they compensate for this; representation and responsiveness as strategies to reconnect with society; the self-restriction of some polities that brings about ever new autonomous expert organizations; the symmetrical rise of autocracies and democracies as the two modern variants of political regimes.
