Описание: The purpose of the Livestock Activity Data Guidance (L-ADG) is to improve the accuracy of livestock emission estimates in national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, and enable countries to measure and report progress towards their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Livestock emissions – including enteric fermentation, manure management and emissions from dung and urine deposited on pasture – account for about 11 percent of global GHG emissions.
A recent review found that among 140 developing countries, 92 have included livestock-related emissions in their NDCs. However, very few have national GHG inventories that are able to track changes in livestock emissions resulting from mitigation policies and measures, which requires a Tier 2 approach as defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This occurs because a lack of activity data and incomplete or poor-quality data hamper the use of the Tier 2 approach.
The L-ADG focuses on estimating activity data from the main ruminant types found in developing countries - cattle, sheep and goats - and provides guidance on how to: identify and assess the availability and quality of existing activity data; structure a Tier 2 inventory to make use of available data; compile activity data when data exists but is incomplete or of insufficient quality; estimate activity data when data is missing; and assess the quality of data and identify priorities for continuous improvement.

Описание:
Cities are home to over fifty percent of the world's population, a figure which is expected to increase enormously by 2050. Despite the growing demand on urban resources and infrastructure, food is still often overlooked as a key factor in planning and designing cities. Without incorporating food into the design process - how it is grown, transported, and bought, cooked, eaten and disposed of - it is impossible to create truly resilient and convivial urbanism.
Moving from the table and home garden to the town, city, and suburbs, Food and Urbanism explores the connections between food and place in past and present design practices. The book also looks to future methods for extending the 'gastronomic' possibilities of urban space. Supported by examples from places across the world, including the UK, Norway, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Romania, Australia and the USA, the book offers insights into how the interplay of physical design and socio-spatial practices centred around food can help to maintain socially rich, productive and sustainable urban space. Susan Parham brings together the latest research from a number of disciplines - urban planning, food studies, sociology, geography, and design - with her own fieldwork on a range of foodscapes to highlight the fundamental role food has to play in shaping the urban future.
Sustainability is often just looked into as found at the intersection between economic, environmental and equity (3Es) variables, also referred to as production, planet and people (3Ps). However, the major determinants of global environmental change are the human species themselves. While they are part of the three Es, they go further to create a fourth pillar, the institutions, partly to manage complexity as they cause it. The complexity of people as the key definer of sustainability lies in the fact that Homo Sapiens are animals of politics and socio-economic reasoning. As they wrestle in the rationality and decision-making space, natural resources, and any other resources (human, capital, financial and social relations) are configured and reconfigured in such a way that sustainability becomes the major goal under threat. Using Zimbabwe as a case study, the contributors in this volume dissect development as an endangered species needing the key actors involved to rethink their decisions and actions in the interest of more sustainable and desirable futures.
Описание: This report shows that managing climate risks through social protection is a valid and effective investment to safeguard the livelihoods of small-scale producers and strengthen their essential role in ensuring food security across the globe.
Climate change is accelerating the frequency and intensity of extreme natural hazards and those living in rural areas are disproportionately affected. Life in high-risk geographical locations, heavy reliance on agriculture and natural resources, limited coping capacity as a result of low incomes, lack of savings, weak social networks, and low asset bases are all contributing factors.
This paper argues that, given the imminent challenges climate change poses for poverty reduction and sustainable development, the need for coherent and integrated climate risk management approaches addressing the underlying causes of vulnerability – as well as increasing the ability of the rural poor to adapt to and cope with natural hazards ? has never been more pressing.
Comparing the Zimbabwean and Japanese agrarian experience may sound impossible. Still, the similarities in the socio-economic and political realities of their respective radical land reforms and grain policies provide scope for such an endeavour. This book examines the aftermath of Japan's radical land reform and the development of her cooperatives. It then compares it to the nature and character of the Zimbabwe post-land reform agrarian structure. The author collected and analysed data from three villages in Japan, and three in Zimbabwe to understand different types of cooperatives, their growths, and constraints. Three distinct types of cooperatives emerged from Japan's 70-year experience in cooperative development. One of these three was identified as providing more relevant lessons necessary for restructuring the British-Indian type of cooperatives currently obtaining in Zimbabwe. The central argument is that the radical Fast-Track Land Reform Programme provided a rare platform (as it did in Japan) to develop robust, genuine grassroots cooperatives from below. Based on a global political economy reading of agricultural production, the book sieves the pros and cons of the Japanese agricultural cooperative system with knowledge systems from the Zimbabwe movement to advance a new agricultural cooperative development framework for Zimbabwe and other post-colonial states.
Описание: This study quantifies global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from aquaculture, and explains how cost-effectiveness analysis could be used to appraise GHG mitigation measures - thereby contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action), while supporting SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

Описание: Although the food industry is beginning to make headway with its sustainability initiatives, substantially more progress is needed in order to feed the world s growing population sustainably. The challenge is that the topic of sustainability can seem overwhelming and there is limited information that is specific to the food industry.

Описание: Food is a central obsession in all cultures, the media, and society. Our future supply of food is filled with risk, and history tells us that lack of food leads to war. Julian Cribb describes a new food system capable of meeting our global needs on this hot and overcrowded planet.
Описание: This report reviews existing approaches for monitoring and evaluation of bioeconomy activities in order to identify already available indicators, from which the authors compiled two comprehensive lists: one listing indicators at the territorial level, including bioeconomy-relevant Sustainable Development Goals indicators; the other mentioning indicators at the product/value chain level, including indicators used for standards, certificates and labels.
According to the report, almost fifty countries have placed the promotion of the bioeconomy on their political agendas. However, bioeconomy activities are not necessarily sustainable. For this reason, FAO developed a set of Aspirational Principles and Criteria for Sustainable Bioeconomy, through which it seeks to provide technical assistance to countries in developing and monitoring the sustainability of bioeconomy activities.
To conclude, the authors propose a stepwise approach to select indicators for monitoring and evaluating the sustainability of the bioeconomy as a possible way forward to help countries and practitioners in their monitoring and evaluation efforts. This approach includes stakeholder engagement, the choice of the relevant territorial level, as well as effective communication of the results.
