Описание: This paper examines the patterns and drivers of rural migration in sub-Saharan Africa and explores their relation to rural and structural transformation, with the objective of informing the current policy debate on migration. Based on a mixed approach that combines a critical literature review covering past, current and future drivers of migration and analyses of available data, the paper elaborates a pluri-disciplinary and comprehensive conceptual framework for understanding the drivers and patterns of rural migration.
Sub?Saharan Africa has a long history of internal and international migration, by choice or by constraint, and movement of people has deeply shaped the region. According to available statistics, about 33 million Africans were living outside their country of nationality in 2015. This represents 2.8 percent of the total population of the continent and only 14 percent of international migrants worldwide (UNDESA, 2015).
The paper finds that, in addition to one-way rural-urban migration, contemporary African migration is characterized by widespread multi-directional (including rural-to-rural and urban-to-rural) and circular migration. These patterns reveal that migration is performing a range of socio-economic functions far beyond the mere transfer of labour from agriculture to other sectors or from rural to urban areas. They highlight possible new structural transformation paths, responding to existing challenges faced by the region in terms of demographic and economic transition.

Описание: The Theory of Peasant Co-operatives is the first translation of Chavanov’s study of the transformation of the peasant economy within a market economy, and his prescription for the development of Russian agriculture. Predicting remarkably accurately the negative aspects of Stalin’s collectivization programme, the hook offers a realistic alternative. Chavanov argues that the success of the co-operative system is dependent on combined development linking diverse form’. of farming organization. Although written in the 1920s, the theoretical concepts and practical insights Chavanov offers are directly relevant to the current restructuring o Soviet agriculture, as well as to debates about smallholders in the Third World and the so-called ‘informal economies’ of industrial societies. The book is likely to become an important text for students of sociology, development studies and Soviet studies.
Описание: Tales of Peasants, Traders, and Officials: Contracting in Rural Andhra Pradesh, 1980–82 stems from a research project in the subfield of rural economic organization, with a focus on credit and irrigation, and on how public policy in these domains influenced agricultural development. The fieldwork was carried out in three states of the Indian Union between 1980 to 1982, including 14 villages in Andhra Pradesh. The survey covered villagers' dealings in the markets for labor, tenancies, credit, and crops. It revealed not only diverse contractual forms in those markets, but also their interplay with access to credit and its terms. Understanding what motivates agents to contract in a particular way—or not at all—is essential in such a study. At the beginning and toward the close of the survey work, the principal investigators conducted interviews with focus groups, some respondents in the household sample, and various public officials, who were encouraged to speak freely. The first part of the monograph comprises an introductory chapter and two long travelogues, which provide structured accounts of the proceedings of those interviews. Next are formal analyses of various alternative contractual arrangements and the villagers' choices among them. These are partly inductive; they draw on what respondents had to say about their options and decisions as well as received theory. Four topics are treated in detail: (1) the choice between employment as a casual laborer and as an attached farm servant; (2) the choice between sharecropping and fixed-rents paid in kind, with special reference to land irrigated by percolation wells; (3) the closely related matter of loans, subsidies, and corruption in connection with the profitability of investments in wells; and (4) the tying of loans for the cultivation of commercial crops to the arrangements for marketing them. The central importance of villagers' outside options and access to credit emerges clearly.
