Описание:
The second edition of this popular textbook combines coverage of public policies in different countries with the conceptual and methodological frameworks for analysing them. This new edition pays particular attention to the international contexts of ideas, interests and institutions in which decision makers operate. In addition, it considers the bilateral, multilateral and transnational aspects of policy-making in today's interconnected world.
This is a core text for introductory modules on undergraduate and postgraduate public policy, public management and public administration programmes. In addition, it will be useful for those courses that take a comparative approach to specific policy areas such as welfare, health and education. With a focus on enabling students to draw their own comparisons, it is the ideal choice for lecturers across the world. New to this Edition: - New and improved chapter structure places conceptual discussion before the empirical analysis, leading to a stronger emphasis on big picture questions throughout - Increased attention to contemporary relevant policy issues such as migration, climate change and security - Quantitative and descriptive data has been systematically updated
Описание: Critical questions of purpose, quality, choice, and access in public education have been key in processes of neoliberal globalization spanning the last four decades. The growing privatization of schools around the world has resulted in fundamental changes regarding the ways in which local systems of education are imagined and re-constructed. Schools and schooling are now increasingly (re)fashioned in alignment with global neoliberal imaginaries for the purpose of (re)producing human capital in the service of private interests. As a result, education for social betterment and democratic engagement, two pillars of public school policies throughout the 20th century, are compromised, even undermined. Employing models and research findings from critical international political economy and progressive education, Globalization and the Neoliberal Schoolhouse: Education in a World of Trouble explores the corrosive influences of commodification and privatization on public education worldwide, within the context of crisis-ridden neoliberal globalization and expanding global capitalist governance. The consequences are nation-state de-evolution, social and cultural decay, and the forfeiture of public schools as engines of progress. Understanding how the historical emergence, political economic processes, and governing institutions of neoliberal globalization are adversely impacting local systems of education – and what to do about it – is important to free education advocates, civic-minded educators, student teachers, social activists, and education development specialists everywhere!
Описание: Globalization, Nationalism, and Music Education in the Twenty-First Century in Greater China examines the recent developments in school education and music education in Greater China – Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan – and the relationship between, and integration of, national cultural identity and globalization in their respective school curriculums. Regardless of their common history and cultural backgrounds, in recent decades, these localities have experienced divergent political, cultural, and educational structures. Through an analysis of the literature, official curriculum documents, approved music textbooks, and a survey questionnaire and in-depth interviews with music teachers, this book also examines the ways in which policies for national identity formation and globalization interact to complement and contradict each other in the context of music education in respect to national and cultural values in the three territories. Wai-Chung Ho’s substantive research interests include the sociology of music, China’s education system, and the comparative study of East Asian music education. Her research focuses on education and development, with an emphasis on the impact of the interplay between globalization, nationalization, and localization on cultural development and school music education.

Описание: Starting with the 1972 publication of his seminal work, Education and the Rise of the Corporate State, Joel Spring has been documenting and analyzing the politics of knowledge and education. Throughout his work he has explored the attempts to use education to advance the economic and political interests of dominant groups. The general term he uses for the relationship between schools and power is "ideological management." His scholarly work first looked at the influence on American schooling of business and economic doctrines embodied in human capital theories and consumerism. The next step in his exploration of the politics of knowledge was to examine these issues in the context of globalization, leading to a proposed educational rights amendment to national constitutions and a new paradigm for education, both of which might ensure that schools are protected from ideological management by economic and political elites. Spring’s indigenous background has strongly shaped his interest in the political and economic goals of schooling, particularly the attempts of those in power to use schools to destroy indigenous languages and cultures. In this collection, Spring brings together 10 of his key writings, providing an overview not just of his own career but the larger contexts in which it is situated. In the Introduction he reviews the evolution and scope of his work and his earlier arguments and reflects on its central themes, which are reflected in the writings selected for this volume. In the World Library of Educationalists, international scholars themselves compile career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces – extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, major theoretical and/practical contributions – so the world can read them in a single manageable volume. Readers will be able to follow the themes and strands of their work and see their contribution to the development of a field, as well as the development of the field itself. Contributors to the series include: Michael Apple, James A. Banks, Stephen J. Ball, Elliot Eisner, Howard Gardner, John Gilbert, Ivor F. Goodson, Peter Jarvis.

Описание: This is a book whose time has come. Ilghiz M. Sinagatullin demonstrates fresh insights and his remarkable gift in revealing how contemporary globalization impacts various facets of education The author indicates that the phenomenon of globalization and its relation to education has never dropped from the agenda within the previous three to four decades. Some politicians, scholars, educators, and students vehemently hate and do not accept this phenomenon. Others are somewhere in the middle: They are trying to gain an insight into this notion. Still others completely accept the idea of globalization, show their full understanding of this actuality, and associate with it current progressive changes in the new centurys sociocultural and educational space. Sweeping all over the world and posing huge challenges to education, contemporary globalization: represents a grandiose challenge itself, permeating all cells of human society; necessitates the realization of global education, a key objective of which is developing school, college, and university students global competence for them to productively function within their own microculture, mainstream culture, and within an interdependent world; has brought into the world scene the neoliberal agenda, the advocates of which call out loud for employing market principles across educational systems; has brought into the global educational space the English language, which has become a necessity for young people across the world, including also far-thinking and forward-looking educators and teacher educators; promotes a rapid moving from the classical to information paradigm; makes us pay particular attention to rural education, an entity too often ignored, unnoticed or wrongly interpreted by educators, teacher educators, and education policy makers; necessitates that those who teach and learn, lured by the charms of globalization and digitalization, should not forget the greatest educators and thinkers of the past, whose invaluable ideas and inestimable pedagogical experience have a strong influence on the contemporary generation of the teaching/learning public. The authors suggestions and recommendations in solving the challenges facing education are full of professional ingenuity and foresight. He supports the theoretical implications by pertinent examples drawn from his professional experience and observations. This book is special because it is aimed at discussing the problems that may interest educators all over the world, which increases its international status and power. The book may be a good source for secondary school teachers, teacher educators, pre-service and in-service teachers, education policy makers as well as parents. Ilghiz M. Sinagatullin is the author of more than 150 publications on education and related domains. Among them are Constructing Multicultural Education in a Diverse Society (2003), The Impact of Globalization on Education (2006), and Teaching is More Than Pedagogical Practice: Thirty-Three Strategies for Dealing with Contemporary Students (2009).

Описание: Reflecting on almost three decades of postsocialist transformations, the second edition of Globalization on the Margins explores continuities and changes in Central Asian education development since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, with a particular focus on the developments that took place since the production of the first edition in 2011. Rather than viewing these transformations in isolation, the authors place their analyses within the global context by reflecting on the interaction between Soviet legacies and global education reform pressures in the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. This new edition, in addition to a revised introduction and a newly added conclusion, consists of four thematic sections, each reflecting a key theme in the educational life of the Central Asian states. These thematic sections, introduction and conclusion collectively update our understanding of the recent developments and challenges in education of the five Central Asian states. They, however, go beyond mere information update, so as to complicate, re-engage, re-form and re-define the margins, taking up ‘margins’ a conceptual, geographic, cultural, and geo-political construct. Notwithstanding the diversity of local and international authors, variety of theoretical perspectives, methodological approaches, and conceptual lenses, the essays reveal the complexity and uncertainty of the post-socialist education transformations. Instead of portraying the transition process as the influx of Western ideas into the region, Globalization on the Margins provides new lenses to critically example education as a contested field of diverse perspectives, competing forces, and multidirectional flow of ideas, concepts, and reforms in Central Asia.
