In Spheres of Intervention, James R. Stocker examines the history of diplomatic relations between the United States and Lebanon during a transformational period for Lebanon and a time of dynamic changes in US policy toward the Middle East. Drawing on tens of thousands of pages of declassified materials from US archives and a variety of Arabic and other non-English sources, Stocker provides a new interpretation of Lebanon's slide into civil war, as well as insight into the strategy behind US diplomatic initiatives toward the Arab-Israeli conflict. During this period, Stocker argues, Lebanon was often a pawn in the games of larger powers. The stability of Lebanon was an aim of US policy at a time when Israel’s borders with Egypt and Jordan were in active contention. Following the June 1967 Arab-Israeli War, the internal political situation in Lebanon became increasingly unstable due to the regional military and political stalemate, the radicalization of the country’s domestic politics, and the appearance of Palestinian militias on Lebanese territory. US officials were more deeply involved in Lebanese affairs than most outside the region realized. After a series of internal crises in 1969, 1970, and 1973, civil war broke out in Lebanon in 1975. The conflict reached a temporary halt after a Syrian military intervention the following year, but this was only an end to the first stage of what would be a sixteen-year civil war. During these crises, the US sought to help the Lebanese government in a variety of ways, including providing military aid to the Lebanese military, convincing Arab countries to take measures to help the Lebanese government, mediating Lebanon’s relations with Israel, and even supporting certain militias.

This bibliography, first published in 1990, is a result of a quarter-century professional and personal relationship between two academics interested in Middle East studies. The comprehensive bibliography consists of western, primarily English, language sources published through 1988 and early 1989 concerning foreign policy toward the Middle East and North Africa during the twentieth century. Included are materials that deal directly with the topic, material that has appeared in published form, ie books, monographs, essays and articles. Also included are some non-published items, most importantly American and British doctoral dissertations and master's theses.
Описание: This book studies how smaller Gulf states managed to increase their influence in the Middle East, oftentimes capitalising on their smallness as a foreign policy tool. By establishing a novel theoretical framework, this study identifies specific ways in which perceptual smallness affect power.

Описание: This book examines the linkage between central bank structure, central bank autonomy—with respect to setting its monetary policy goals, choosing its policy mechanisms, legal independence, and financial independence—and monetary policy, both in select benchmark countries and at a broader theoretical level. Country-specific chapters on the US, UK, Germany, Greece, Russia, India, China, Japan, Brazil, and South Africa focus on the history, administrative structure, and independence of the central monetary authority in these countries. The chapters go on to explore the countries’ conduct of monetary policy, their interplay with political forces and the wider economy, their currency, and their macroeconomic outcomes. The book will appeal to researchers, students of economics, finance and business, as well as general readers with an interest in the subject.
Описание: Newly expanded and updated, United States Foreign Policy in the Middle East: The Historical Roots of Neo-Conservatism argues that the intellectual and historical origins of Neo-Conservatism can be traced back to the Greco-Persian wars. It contends that neo-Conservatism itself is a deeply flawed world view which, when combined with pressure from interest groups, has led to major American foreign policy mistakes. The book examines contemporary topics such as the nuclear agreement between Iran and the United States, the roots of ISIS and the Saudi and American role in creating radical Islamic movements, the legacy of the Iraq war, and the role of Congress and domestic pressure groups in formulating American foreign policy towards the Middle East. In addition, it discusses historical topics such as the legacy of the Crusades and behavioralist versus traditionalist approaches to foreign policy, and asserts that current academic training produces advisers and analysts who misunderstand Middle Eastern history, cultures, and traditions. Finally, the book finds a direct link between foreign policy, the American government’s need to maintain an “empire,” and the growth of income inequality and lack of social progress domestically. United States Foreign Policy in the Middle East is an excellent supplemental reader to standard textbooks in international relations and comparative or American government. It is also a good choice for lay readers interested in the Middle East and American foreign policy.
