Bridging two generations of scholarship on social inequality and modern political forms, this book examines the political philosophies of inclusion of subalterns/Dalits in Gramsci and Ambedkar's political philosophies. It highlights the full range of Gramsci's 'philosophy of praxis' and presents a more critical appreciation of his thought in the study of South Asian societies. Equally, Ambedkar's thought and philosophy is put to the forefront and acquires a prominence in the international context.
Overcoming geographical, cultural and disciplinary boundaries, the book gives relevance to the subalterns. Following the lead of Gramsci and Ambedkar, the contributors are committed, apart from underscoring the historical roots of subalternity, to uncovering the subalterns' presence in social, economic, cultural, educational, literary, legal and religious grounds. The book offers a renewed critical approach to Gramsci and Ambedkar and expands on their findings in order to offer a present-day political focus into one of the most crucial themes of contemporary society.
This book is of interest to an interdisciplinary audience, including political theory, post-colonial studies, subaltern studies, comparative political philosophy, Dalit studies, cultural studies, South Asian studies and the study of religions.

Описание:
The volume offers a study of Antiquity in a dialectic, wide social perspective, stressing the role of popular classes as active producers of culture, while reflecting upon the scientific and ideological influence of contemporary social issues on academic investigations of the ancient world. The volume is divided into four sections: the first three sections (History and Literature, History of Classical Scholarship, Reception) are dedicated to the production of culture and ideology by the ancient subaltern classes, the Marxist approaches in the history of Classical studies, and the reception of Classics in popular culture since the XIX century. The last section focuses on Pedagogy and deals with the social limits of the fruition and production of Classical knowledge in the contemporary world, reflecting on how to overcome these limitations. The conclusion stresses that Gramsci’s dichotomy of intellectuals and subalterns can provide a theoretical and methodological framework useful for students, teachers, and scholars in the field of Classics to devise pedagogical strategies that aim to renovate our school and academic systems, with a keen eye on the epistemic transformations that might characterize the future of Classics.

Описание:
Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest global icons of all times, is known as much for his successful leadership of India's non-violent anti-colonial freedom movement as for his virtue and simplicity. His ideals have inspired diverse social and political movements across the world: against apartheid in South Africa, racial segregation in the United States, several state policies and actions in India and nuclear weaponisation, and for environmental sustainability and world peace. Hence, a pertinent question is often raised by media and academia: How would Gandhi have responded to the contemporary Indian and global situation marked by ethnic conflicts, terrorism, economic insecurity under the dominance of a global neo-liberal economic order and moral degeneration in private and public lives?
Addressing this question in this volume through critical and variant re-readings of Hind Swaraj (1909), his key manifesto of socio-political transformation, social scientists, political philosophers and social activists seek to establish a social and academic dialogue with Gandhi, interrogating his thoughts, values and vision, and examining their relevance to present-day problems. In spotlight is a contentious issue: the relationship between modernity and emancipation of subalterns, in the light of his critique of modern civilisation, the central thesis of the text.
This book will be of interest to those in Gandhian studies, political science, history, philosophy, sociology, development studies, as well as activists, policy makers and the lay reader.
Описание: In recent decades, East Asia has gained prominence and has become synonymous with Asia, while other Asian regions, such as South and Southeast Asia, have been subsumed under it. The resultant overgeneralization has meant that significant aspects of the global ecological crisis as they affect these two regions have been overlooked. Chitra Sankaran refocuses the global lens on these two rapidly developing regions of Asia. Combining South Asian and Southeast Asian philosophical views and folk perspectives with mainstream ecocritical and ecofeminist theories, she generates a localized critical idiom that qualifies and subverts some established theoretical assumptions.
This pioneering study, introducing a corpus of more than thirty ecofictions by women writers from twelve countries in South and Southeast Asia, examines how recent global threats to ecosystems, in both nature and culture, impact subdominant groups, including women. This new corpus reveals how women and subalterns engage with various aspects of critical ecologies. Using ecofeminist theory augmented by postcolonial and risk theories as the main theoretical framework, Sankaran argues that these women writers present unique perspectives that review Asian women's relationships to human and nonhuman worlds.
