Описание: Explaining the determinants of China and India’s development cooperation in Africa cannot be achieved in simple terms. After collecting over 1000 development cooperation projects by China and India in Africa using AidData, this book applies the method of qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) to understand the motives behind their development cooperation. Mthembu posits that neither China nor India were solely motivated by one causal factor, whether strategic, economic or humanitarian interests or the size of their diaspora in Africa. China and India are driven by multiple and conjunctural factors in providing more development cooperation to some countries than others on the African continent. Only when some of these respective causal factors are combined is it evident that both countries disbursed high levels of development cooperation to some African countries.

Описание: China is the world’s largest development country and second largest economy. Africa is the continent with the most developing countries and one of the fastest growing and most promising regions in the world. Although China and Africa are far apart geographically, friendship between the two regions traces its origins back to ancient times. Having gone through thick and thin together, China and Africa have always been a community with a shared future. Shared historical experiences and struggles have formed a profound friendship between the Chinese and African people. This friendship has in turn become a valuable asset that has been passed down to the present day.
The entry of socialism with Chinese characteristics into the new era will have a major impact on the world and bring new historical opportunities for African development and for friendly China-Africa cooperation. At the global level, the general trend of economic globalization is irreversible, world economic recovery and development is going well, and the international community is paying increasing attention to Africa. These factors provide a favorable international environment for China-Africa friendly cooperation. From China’s perspective, our country, which is entering a new era, will continue to expand and deepen its open policies, to focus on promoting industrial transformation and upgrading, to vigorously develop a digital economy, to lead in establishing new international financial institutions and innovative financing models, to actively promote international trilateral cooperation, and to promote the international use of the Chinese Yuan. By so doing, China will bring new opportunities and new impetus to China-Africa friendly cooperation.
From the perspective of Africa, the political, economic and security situation in Africa has generally improved in recent years, and the development outlook is promising, which provides good conditions for more practical and higher-level pragmatic cooperation between China and Africa. Meanwhile, we must see that China-Africa cooperation will not be smooth; it still faces many problems and challenges. It is precisely because of this that China and Africa must stick to the concept of ‘’genuine, sincere, friendly and honest’’ cooperation and the principle of equality and mutual benefit, aiming to work together to build a community of a shared future for both China-Africa and for mankind, comprehensively strengthening and deepening cooperation, meeting challenges together, and achieving shared development.
This book is the outcome of a multi-annual study of Chinese and European research institutions that addresses the partnership between the EU and China and its political and economic implications.
The book’s distinct focus is to situate this multipurpose relationship within the context of the multidisciplinary academic debate about China’s interregional relations with specific regions (i.e. Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa, Middle East), notably the Belt and Road initiative (BRI).
Both the economic and political dimensions of the international rise of China are critically analysed, with special attention to opportunities, risks, challenges and controversial issues. The international set of authors uniquely combines academics and decision makers as well as experts and think tank leaders.
The collection includes contributions by Mario Telo, Sun Jisheng, Lin Hongyu, Zhao Jiakun, Wei Ling, Uwe Wissenbach, Feng Yuan, Jean-Francois Di Meglio, Shi Shiwei, Jurgen Ruland, Fabricio Rodriguez, Sebastian Santander, Wang Jin, Guy Burton, Geoffrey Harris, Jia Ruixia, Zhang Min and Gerald Stahl.

Описание: The Making of Eurasia investigates the multi-layered spectrum of China and Russia’s Eurasian policies towards each other, ranging from competition to cooperation, as well as the role of regional actors in between. The book examines the impact of and responses to the dynamic Sino-Russian interaction in the wake of China’s Belt and Road initiative, focusing on the selected case studies of Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Uzbekistan, but also on inter-regional implications across the Eurasian space. With China’s imprint on inter-regional politics and ambition to make a distinctive Chinese contribution to ‘globalization’ and Russia’s vision of a ‘Greater Eurasia’ in which Moscow stakes out a place for itself as an indispensable power, other regional actors adopt policies that respond to and co-shape the resulting centrifugal forces.
Meanwhile, power shifts are underway on a global plane, as the normative divide between Russia and the West has widened, and as the Sino-American rivalry is intensifying. The book therefore also sheds light on the effects of Eurasian power shifts on global governance in a context where global ‘leadership’ is contested, and in which the US and Europe are re-defining their relationship not only towards a self-confident China but also towards each other. As such, this study will provide valuable insight for students and scholars of Eurasian Asia Studies, Foreign Policy Analysis, and International Relations at large.
Описание: This collection of essays on international relations and conflict in Africa is offered as a scholarly tribute to Professor Victor Ojakorotu, a distinguished scholar of African international politics. The editors, rising scholars Kelechi Johnmary Ani and Kayode Eesuola, have assembled a team of contributors whose work examines vital themes for understanding modern Africa. The volume encompasses assessments of African international politics, governance, conflict dynamics, and peacekeeping efforts, focusing on the national conflicts in Central African Republic and Somalia, protests in South Africa, terrorism in Nigeria, and insecurity in West African states. The dynamics of diplomacy and challenges of bilateral and multilateral relations, peacekeeping, gender in governance, and international trade figure prominently. International Relations and Security Politics in Africa will be essential reading for all students of the continent. The second theme of International Relations and Environmental Conflict in Africa covers pressing issues of environmental politics, such as environmental activism and litigation, climate change, conservation, the challenges of coastal communities, flood prevention, and waste management. Oil subsidy removal, rule of law, and the roles of media and religion are also closely considered. This collection’s final theme covers domestic security issues, such as policing, ethno-religious conflicts, local conflicts between farmers and herdsmen, and strategies of conflict resolution. Other issues under discussion include peacebuilding, urban machine politics, the place of children and youth in nation building, and the intersection of politics and psychology in self-determination struggles. Of vital importance to any student of modern Africa, these chapters offer a solid and detailed compendium of readings to contextualize key international relations subjects in the real world. The compendium is also a fitting tribute to the life’s work of one of the brightest scholarly minds Africa has produced.

Описание: China Joins Global Governance: Cooperation and Contentions, edited by Mingjiang Li, provides a comprehensive and insightful examination of China`s role in global governance. The contributors make a significant contribution to the scholarly debate on the impacts of China`s rise on the stability and future evolution of the international system.
South Africa is the most industrialized power in Africa. It was rated the continent's largest economy in 2016 and is the only African member of the G20. It is also the only strategic partner of the EU in Africa. Yet despite being so strategically and economically significant, there is little scholarship that focuses on South Africa as a regional hegemon. This book provides the first comprehensive assessment of South Africa's post-Apartheid foreign policy. Over its 23 chapters - -and with contributions from established Africa, Western, Asian and American scholars, as well as diplomats and analysts - the book examines the current pattern of the country's foreign relations in impressive detail. The geographic and thematic coverage is extensive, including chapters on: the domestic imperatives of South Africa's foreign policy; peace-making; defence and security; bilateral relations in Southern, Central, West, Eastern and North Africa; bilateral relations with the US, China, Britain, France and Japan; the country's key external multilateral relations with the UN; the BRICS economic grouping; the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group (ACP); as well as the EU and the World Trade Organization (WTO). An essential resource for researchers, the book will be relevant to the fields of area studies, foreign policy, history, international relations, international law, security studies, political economy and development studies.

Описание: This book addresses one main question: whether the United States has a cohesive foreign policy for Africa. In assessing the history of the United States and its interactions with the continent, particularly with the Horn of Africa, the author casts doubt on whether successive US administrations had a cohesive foreign policy for Africa. The volume examines the historical interactions between the US and the continent, evaluates the US involvement in Africa through foreign policy lenses, and compares foreign policy preferences and strategies of other European, EU and BRIC countries towards Africa.
