Описание: This book addresses equity auditing at the community level. The inspiration for the book emerged from two sources. The first was hearing the frustration expressed from school leaders and teachers when trying to address the educational needs of and expectations for their students while also having to contend with the socio-structural issues that function as roadblocks to their success, particularly for low-income students and those living in poverty. These include lack of sufficient housing, exposure to high levels of crime and violence, inadequate fresh and nutritious food, deficient healthcare, and an absence of community resources such as safe play spaces. The second was the realization that many of the citizens within a city or school district are unaware of the disparate conditions among their neighborhoods and communities, including those stakeholders who are in a position to make needed policy changes. The purpose, then, of this book is to provide examples of community equity audits, using geographic information system mapping and other data. These audits create a picture and story of the inequities among communities and the need for community equity audits to raise the awareness of those who can influence policy and practices to create communities that promote the health and well-being of their citizens, most especially their children, so that the opportunity gap can be eliminated and schools can well-educate all of their students. The need for this information is great because schools alone cannot achieve all their educational goals if students and their families are living in circumstances that negatively impact their health, well-being and ultimately their chances to succeed. This book attempts to help practitioners and university faculty address what we believe is the most challenging and important issue in education today—how to ensure that all students have the opportunity and support they need to be successful in school and life.

Описание: This book explores the aspirations of 'working class' girls' in an ex-mining community in the UK. It highlights the difficulties present in these 'post-industrial' settings, which are often areas of severe deprivation, and questions whether these place limitations on the achievements of the girls within the community. Based on an eight-year longitudinal study of girls in three primary schools and two secondary schools which differed in levels of attainment, the book examines the girls' initial aspirations, decision-making, and later achievements when in post-compulsory education. It will be compelling reading for students, academics and practitioners in Education, offering a unique appreciation of how working-class girls balance their own aspirations with the educational opportunities perceived to be available to them.

Описание: Initially expected to bring efficiency to the Russian economy and prosperity to Russian society, the shock therapy of price liberalization, privatization and macroeconomic stabilization introduced under Boris Yeltsin was quickly condemned as having worsened the lives of most Russians. Based on conversations with more than two dozen women in a provincial Russian capital, this book takes a retrospective look at these economic policies and explores how they transformed the trajectory of the lives of these women- both positively and negatively- in the family and in the workplace. McKinney considers the everyday experiences of the women as they provided for their families, established businesses, travelled abroad, and adjusted to the new economic, political and social environment of the Late Soviet and Post-Soviet era. Through their divergent experiences, Russian Women and the End of Soviet Socialism casts light on how these women view issues of gender, ethnicity, domestic and international politics, and the end of the Soviet experiment.Students and scholars across a range of disciplines, including gender studies, sociology, economics and history, will find this book of interest.

Описание: Our children mean the world to us. They are so central to our hopes and dreams that we will do almost anything to keep them healthy, happy, and safe. What happens, then, when a child has serious problems? In Family Trouble, a compelling portrait of upheaval in family life, sociologist Ara Francis tells the stories of middle-class men and women whose children face significant medical, psychological, and social challenges. Francis interviewed the mothers and fathers of children with such problems as depression, bi-polar disorder, autism, learning disabilities, drug addiction, alcoholism, fetal alcohol syndrome, and cerebral palsy. Children’s problems, she finds, profoundly upset the foundations of parents’ everyday lives, overturning taken-for-granted expectations, daily routines, and personal relationships. Indeed, these problems initiated a chain of disruption that moved through parents’ lives in domino-like fashion, culminating in a crisis characterized by uncertainty, loneliness, guilt, grief, and anxiety. Francis looks at how mothers and fathers often differ in their interpretation of a child’s condition, discusses the gendered nature of child rearing, and describes how parents struggle to find effective treatments and to successfully navigate medical and educational bureaucracies. But above all, Family Trouble examines how children’s problems disrupt middle-class dreams of the “normal” family. It captures how children’s problems “radiate” and spill over into other areas of parents’ lives, wreaking havoc even on their identities, leading them to reevaluate deeply held assumptions about their own sense of self and what it means to achieve the good life. Engagingly written, Family Trouble offers insight to professionals and solace to parents. The book offers a clear message to anyone in the throes of family trouble: you are in good company, and you are not as different as you might feel...

Описание: This book offers a rich ethnographic account of blue-collar workers’ everyday life in a central Russian industrial town coping with simultaneous decline and the arrival of transnational corporations. Everyday Post-Socialism demonstrates how people manage to remain satisfied, despite the crisis and relative poverty they faced after the fall of socialist projects and the social trends associated with neoliberal transformation. Morris shows the ‘other life’ in today’s Russia which is not present in mainstream academic discourse or even in the media in Russia itself. This book offers co-presence and a direct understanding of how the local community lives a life which is not only bearable, but also preferable and attractive when framed in the categories of ‘habitability’, commitment and engagement, and seen in the light of alternative ideas of worth and specific values. Topics covered include working-class identity, informal economy, gender relations and transnational corporations.
Описание: This book adopts a new perspective on the transformation of social inequality by analysing how it is experienced by individuals in a region that has undergone deindustrialisation, and explores the continued importance of class identity as workers attempt to manage the declining public recognition of their skills.
