Описание: This book offers a fresh reading of Spenser`s poetry in the light of his Protestantism. Previous critics have devoted much space to the poet`s debt to the literature of antiquity and the Renaissance, as well as to his knowledge of Neoplatonism, mythography and iconography; but less has been written about the imaginative consequences for his poetry of his Protestantism.

Описание: Spenser in the Moment argues that contrary to anyone`s expectation, Spenser studies may be on the brink of a revolution. Bringing together scholars from three continents, it surveys established methods, and then makes the case that there may be whole worlds of Spenser that have been nearly unsee-able or unhearable in the past forty years.

One of the few theological formulas of medieval times to survive the scrutiny of the Reformation was that of the infernal triad of the sins of the Flesh, the World, and the Devil. Through a close analysis of the structural and thematic role that this triad plays in Books I and II of the Faerie Queene and in Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes, Patrick Cullen explores the imaginative continuity between two of the greatest poets of the English Renaissance, Edmund Spenser and John Milton.
By presenting the two poets in a single focus. Professor Cullen demonstrates the profound indebtedness of Milton to Spenser, a relationship which has not received due scholarly attention, despite Milton's praise of Spenser as "a better teacher than Aquinas" and his admission according to Dryden, that Spenser was his "original." Professor Cullen's new approach allows him to define a clear allegorical lineage between some of the major poems of the period, demonstrating the imaginative affinity of Spenser and Milton with great concreteness and specificity. Originally published in 1975. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Описание: This book reveals the queen behind Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene. Placing Spenser’s epic poem in the context of the tumultuous sixteenth century, Donald Stump offers a groundbreaking reading of the poem as an allegory of Elizabeth I’s life. By narrating the loves and wars of an Arthurian realm that mirrors Elizabethan England, Spenser explores the crises that shaped Elizabeth’s reign: her break with the pope to create a reformed English Church, her standoff with Mary, Queen of Scots, offensives against Irish rebels and Spanish troops, confrontations with assassins and foreign invaders, and the apocalyptic expectations of the English people in a time of national transformation. Brilliantly reconciling moral and historicist readings, this volume offers a major new interpretation of The Faerie Queene.
The four-hundred-year story of readers' struggles with a famously unreadable poem--and what they reveal about the history of reading and the future of literary studies
"I am now in the country, and reading Spencer's fairy-queen. Pray what is the matter with me?" The plaint of an anonymous reader in 1712 sounds with endearing frankness a note of consternation that resonates throughout The Faerie Queene's reception history, from its first known reader, Spenser's friend Gabriel Harvey, who urged him to write anything else instead, to Virginia Woolf, who insisted that if one wants to like the poem, "the first essential is, of course, not to read" it. For more than four centuries critics have sought to counter this strain of readerly resistance, but rather than trying to remedy the frustrations and failures of Spenser's readers, Catherine Nicholson cherishes them as a sensitive barometer of shifts in the culture of reading itself.
Indeed, tracking the poem's mixed fortunes in the hands of its bored, baffled, outraged, intoxicated, obsessive, and exhausted readers turns out to be an excellent way of rethinking the past and future prospects of literary study. By examining the responses of readers from Queen Elizabeth and the keepers of Renaissance commonplace books to nineteenth-century undergraduates, Victorian children, and modern scholars, this book offers a compelling new interpretation of the poem and an important new perspective on what it means to read, or not to read, a work of literature.

Описание: Dan Dinello explicates Alfonso Cuaron`s visionary Children of Men (2006) from ideological, psychological, and philosophical perspectives. Dinello explores the film`s criticism of reactionary politics, arguing that it prods us to imagine an egalitarian alternative by urging identification with rebels, outcasts, and racial and ethnic outsiders.
