Описание:
1945 to 1980 marks an extensive period of mass migration of students, refugees, ex-soldiers, and workers from an extraordinarily wide range of countries to West Germany. Turkish, Kurdish, and Italian groups have been studied extensively, and while this book uses these groups as points of comparison, it focuses on ethnic communities of varying social structures—from Spain, Iran, Ukraine, Greece, Croatia, and Algeria—and examines the interaction between immigrant networks and West German state institutions as well as the ways in which patterns of cooperation and conflict differ. This study demonstrates how the social consequences of mass immigration became intertwined with the ideological battles of Cold War Germany and how the political life and popular movements within these immigrant communities played a crucial role in shaping West German society.
Описание: Nations, Identities and the First World War examines the changing perceptions and attitudes about the nation and the fatherland by different social, ethnic, political and religious groups during the conflict and its aftermath. The book combines chapters on broad topics like propaganda state formation, town and nation, and minorities at war, with more specific case studies in order to deepen our understanding of how processes of national identification supported the cultures of total war in Europe. This transnational volume also reveals and develops a range of insightful connections between the themes it covers, as well as between different groups within Europe and different countries and regions, including Western and Eastern Europe, the Ottoman Empire and colonial territories. It is a vital study for all students and scholars of the First World War.

Описание: Face-to-face diplomacy is the most ubiquitous practice of world politics, seen as essential by leaders, but dismissed as irrelevant by political scientists. Drawing upon social neuroscience and psychology, this book addresses this puzzle to create a theory of face-to-face diplomacy that is relevant for both students and scholars of world politics as well as practitioners and policymakers.

Описание: The revolutionary movements in late tsarist Russia inspired a reaction by groups on the right. Although these groups were ostensibly defending the status quo, they were in fact, as this book argues, very radical in many ways. This book discusses these radical rightist groups, showing how they developed considerable popular appeal across the whole Russian Empire, securing support from a wide cross-section of society. The book considers the nature and organisation of the groups, their ideologies and polices on particular issues and how they changed over time. The book concludes by examining how and why the groups lost momentum and support in the years immediately before the First World War, and briefly explores how far present day rightist groups in Russia are connected to this earlier movement.
Generation Stalin is the first comprehensive exploration of the instrumental role of French writers in the creation and propagation of Joseph Stalin's cult of personality. Focusing on the four most prominent writers affiliated with the French Communist Party (PCF)--Henri Barbusse, Romaine Rolland, Paul Eluard, and Louis Aragon--Andrew Sobanet traces the rise and evolution of the Stalin cult in France from the late 1920s through the 1950s. Barbusse was the author of the first official biography of Stalin, and the work served as a prototype for the dictator's official biographies into the early Cold War period. The PCF was one of the most important communist parties, and these writers helped in significant ways to shape Stalinist propaganda in the international communist sphere, including within the USSR. Fundamental to Generation Stalin is an investigation of complicity with authoritarianism on the part of PCF-affiliated writers, who were often cast as intellectual and moral guides. Sobanet provides analysis of how these writers used a variety of genres--biography, novel, drama, film, poetry, essays, reportage--to support dictatorial leadership. Focusing on French nationalism and the French "culture of commemoration" used to reinforce party doctrine, Generation Stalin analyzes what it was to be a French Stalinist.

Описание: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject History Europe - Germany - National Socialism, World War II, course: National Socialist German Women s League Abroad, language: English, abstract: Beitr ge zu Feminismus, Antisemitismus und Nationalsozialismus im 19./20. Jahrhundert: Vol. 9. National Socialist groups of the German Women's League Abroad existed in many European and non-European countries, such as Guatemala, Chile, Brazil, Italy, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Japan, the British Mandate of Palestine and many more. Founded in August 1933, the new overseas organization was a counterpart to the NS Women's League in Germany with the declared goal to unite all Nazi women abroad who were ready to knit, bake and mother for the German ethnic community. In 1941, the new league consisted of more than 300 local group leaders and nearly 3,000 assistants and had organized more than 35,000 meetings and gatherings. Researchers and readers who are interested in the worldwide propagation of German National Socialism can easily find various articles about the body's activity abroad. However, what is still lacking is an introductory, general summary of the organization. To fill this academic void, the book offers an overview of the founding and development of the association as well as details of its program and conceptualization. The second part of the study seeks to clearly and colorfully depict the establishment, activities and events of the German Women's League Abroad in the British Mandate of Palestine, based on documents and photos from archives in Germany and Israel.

This book discusses these radical rightist groups, showing how they developed considerable popular appeal across the whole Russian Empire, securing support from a wide cross-section of society. Europe-Asia StudiesThe book convincingly argues that the Russian right was qualitatively different from traditional conservatism, and that it shared commonalities with other rightist groups in fin-de-si?cle Europe...The book is an important contribution to the history of the Russian right, a topic that has great relevanceto post-Soviet Russian society. The incorporation of new archival materials, mainly police reports, intothe research helps to clarify the intricate relationship between the radical right and autocracy.ALEXANDRA MEDZIBRODSZKY, PhD Candidate, Department of History, Central European University, Budapest, Hungary

In October 1990 West German general J?rg Sch?nbohm and a small team of experts moved into the headquarters of the former East German army to effect the unprecedented: the takeover, in peacetime and without the firing of a single shot, of a well-equiped army that had been the Bundeswehr's main enemy only a few months earlier. What Sch?nbohm discovered and recorded in a diary was almost incredible: plans to conquer West Germany's major cities; blueprints for a surprise attack on West Berlin through the city's subways and sewer systems; papers documenting the planned use of chemical weapons. But there were also the more mundane problems of what to do with those 100,000 men whom the end of the Cold War had made superfluous. It is through accounts like this one that we are reminded of how dangerous a world we all lived in between 1945 and the fall of Communism.
