Описание: NOVALIS: HYMNS TO THE NIGHT
A new edition of Novalis' Hymns To the Night, and Spiritual Songs, translated by George Macdonald, with an introduction and notes by Carol Appleby.
Includes the German text.
Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg, 1772-1801) is the most mystical of the German Romantic poets. He is at once the most typical and the most unusual of the German Romantic writers, indeed, of all Romantic poets. His best known work, Hymns To the Night, was published in 1800.
Novalis is supremely idealistic, far more so than Johann Wolfgang von Goethe or Heinrich Heine. He died young, which makes him, like Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats, something of a hero (or martyr). He did not write as much as Shelley, but his work, like that of Keats or Arthur Rimbaud, promised much. For Michael Hamburger, Novalis' poetry is almost totally idealistic:
Novalis's philosophy, then, is not mystical, but utopian. That is why his imaginative works are almost wholly lacking in conflict. They are a perpetual idyll.
It's true that Novalis' work is supremely idealistic, and utopian. But it is also mystical, because it points towards the invisible, unseen and unknown, and aims to reach that ecstatic realm. Novalis wrote:
The sense of poetry has much in common with that for mysticism. It is the sense of the peculiar, personal, unknown, mysterious, for what is to be revealed, the necessary-accidental. It represents the unrepresentable. It sees the invisible, feels the unfeelable, etc... The sense for poetry has a close relationship with the sense for augury and the religious sense, with the sense for prophecy in general.
Glyn Hughes remarks of Novalis: 'The sustaining interest in the reading of Novalis's works is the sense of contact with a mind of visionary intensity and total commitment. The poetic achievement is in the momentary glimpses of ideal reality: what, in other contexts, we should call epiphanies. (61)
The translator of Hymns To the Night, Scottish fantasist George Macdonald (1824-95), included Lewis Carroll and John Ruskin among his literary friends. His well-known works were Phantastes (1858), Lilith (1895), Bannerman's Boyhood and the Curdie children's stories: The Princess and the Goblin (1872) and The Princess and Curdie (1882). Macdonald's books were a significant influence on both J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
Illustrated. With bibliography and notes. 160 pages. ISBN 9781861714350.
Описание: A collection of poems, observations and heart felt depiction of an interesting life lived through the eyes of a man who has loved, lost, and endured. Poems for all who have been forever changed by relationships, paused to reflect on the simple things in life, or have learned to see things retrospectively having survived an interesting journey.
Heartbreak and grief touch every soul at least once in a lifetime and Ranata Suzuki translates those raw emotions into words. The Longest Night combines strikingly poignant quotations, powerfully emotive poetry and captivating silhouette imagery to form a mournful lover's journal that explores a side of love that is deep, dark and hauntingly beautiful.
Each of the book's elements are skilfully woven together to reveal fragments of thoughts and feelings that seem almost to belong to the reader as years of painful longing are condensed into the context of a single night.
The journal begins with 'Sunset', in which poems convey the initial feelings of shock and loss first felt when a relationship with a loved one ends. As the poetry descends into an emotional downward spiral, the book progresses into its next chapter, 'Darkness', in which emptiness, jealousy, sorrow and despair are passionately portrayed.
The concluding chapter, 'First Light', sees the gradual dawning of a new outlook. The final poems express a gratitude for what once was, an acceptance of what now is, and come to the uplifting conclusion that even though a relationship can be fated to end tragically, the memories gained and lessons learned from it are, in their own way, treasured gifts that will last a lifetime.
A book for anyone who has found themselves separated from someone they love no matter the circumstance, The Longest Night is a companion for the broken heart on the painful emotional journey that is losing someone you love from your life. Its words serve as a comforting reminder, whether you are travelling this road or have recently completed this journey yourself, that despite the loneliness you may sometimes feel along the way none of us walk this path alone.
"Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house..." So begins the immortal lines that begin one of America's most famous poems adding magic to one of America's most favorite holidays. Written in the 1820s, Clement C. Moore did not openly acknowledge that he was the author until almost 1840. That makes this edition, with original woodcut illustrations by T. C. Boyd, one of the earliest published editions of this timeless classic. Imagine sitting at the foot of the bed of your child reading from an edition that is nearly identical to what children were familiar with for more than 100 years And it gets better than that. The real Saint Nicholas was a real person who lived in the 4th century, famed for his generosity. What better way to celebrate Christmas than paying homage to one who knew the real 'reason for the season'? This hard cover would make a great gift edition
Available in both soft and hard cover editions, with bulk discounts available directly from the publisher.

Описание: Hungary`s Agnes Nemes Nagy (1922-91) is one of Europe`s major modern poets. Her poems are monumental yet crystalline in their thought and organisation. The vast pressures of her nation`s troubled history find their equivalent in human feeling, voiced through the extraordinary compressed power and explosive formality of her poetry.

Описание:
Winner of the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry, Susan Gubernat’s The Zoo at Night reflects with subtle craft on the dark side of love, death, the family romance, carnality, and lofty aspirations. She thinks of her poems as “night thoughts” resembling nocturnes, in which “a bit of light leaks in.”
Both experimental and classic, Gubernat’s poems combine formal and free verse elements. A (mostly) unrhymed sonnet sequence seeks to recall the world of a pre-digital childhood when physical objects—tactile, mechanical—took on totemic import and magical significance. Other poems echo the Rilkean principle that poetry can be empathetic by looking outward at the “thingness” of the world.
In these works of love and longing, Gubernat enters through the doors of craft and exits with feeling.
