The history of U.S. diplomacy in the Middle East is marked by numerous stark failures and a few ephemeral successes. Jimmy Carter's short-lived Middle East diplomatic strategy constitutes an exception in vision and approach. In this extensive and long-overdue analysis of Carter's Middle East policy, Jorgen Jensehaugen sheds light on this important and unprecedented chapter in U.S. regional diplomacy. Against all odds, including the rise of Menachem Begin's right-wing government in Israel, Carter broke new ground by demanding the involvement of the Palestinians in Arab-Israeli diplomatic negotiations. This book assesses the president's comprehensive peace' doctrine, which aimed to encompass all parties of the conflict, and reveals the reasons why his vision ultimately failed. Largely based on analysis of newly-declassified diplomatic files and American, British, Palestinian and Israeli archival sources, this book is the first comprehensive examination of Jimmy Carter's engagement with the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. At a time when U.S. involvement in the region threatens to exacerbate tensions further, Arab-Israeli Diplomacy under Carter provides important new insights into the historical roots of the ongoing unrest. The book will be of value to Middle East and International Relations scholars, and those researching U.S diplomacy and the Carter Administration.

Описание: Argues that the Israeli-Arab conflict has been more important for the EU than other conflict
Provides a reader-friendly historical overview with chronologically organised chapters for a quick reference of the EU's position on a specific event
Covers recent events that contributed to the fragmentation of the EU's policy vis- -vis the conflict, such as the election of Donald Trump, Brexit, and the rise of right-wing, nationalist or populist parties and governments in Europe
Introduces an innovative methodology applicable to similar studies of the Bulletin of the European Communities/European Union that trace other aspects of EU policy
Includes an annotated selection of key EC/EU declarations on the Israeli-Arab conflict in an appendix
Nearly 50 years since the European Foreign Ministers issued their first declaration on the conflict between Israel and Palestine in 1971, the EU continues to have close political and economic ties with the region. Based exclusively on primary sources, this study offers an up-to-date overview of EU's involvement in the Israeli-Arab conflict since 1967. It utilises an innovative methodology to analyse keyword frequency in a sample of more than 2300 declarations and statements published in the Bulletin of the European Communities/European Union (1967-2009) as well as council reports and press interviews (2009-2018) to uncover broad patterns for qualitative analysis. The outcomes suggest that the Israeli-Arab conflict is more important to the EU than any other conflict, having been key to shaping EU's foreign policy overall.

It examines what constitutes a just peace, both conceptually within the field of peacebuilding and empirically in the context of the EU as a peacebuilder in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Why has peace in the Middle East remained so elusive?
Obstacle to Peace: The US Role in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict provides the answer while also explaining why you won't hear it from U.S. government officials or the mainstream media.
With incisive and provocative analysis, Jeremy R. Hammond provides a meticulously documented account that explodes popular myths and deconstructs standard narratives about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
For anyone seeking a better understanding of the conflict's root causes, the true reasons for its persistence, and the way forward, Obstacle to Peace delivers the knowledge and insights to effect the paradigm shift that is necessary for a just peace to be achieved.

How US and Israeli policies have strengthened Hamas
Why Israel implemented an illegal policy of collectively punishing the civilian population of Gaza, and how it's been able to do so with impunity
What really happened during Operation Cast Lead and Operation Pillar of Defense, two of Israel's large-scale military assaults on the defenseless Gaza Strip
What the so-called "peace process" is and why the US pursues it so aggressively
Why Israel attacked the Mavi Marmara in international waters, and why the US defended the killing of nine peace activists on board
How Israel has maintained its occupation of Palestine and what must happen to bring it to an end
What must occur for Palestinian refugees to have a realistic hope of exercising their right to return to their homeland
How and why the US mainstream media manipulate information so as to manufacture consent for US foreign policy
How to decipher the euphemistic language used by the government and media to deceive the public
How the United Nations helped create the conflict and how Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has played a duplicitous role
What the Goldstone Report was, what its findings were, and why it so upset the US and Israel
How, despite congenial rhetoric to the contrary, the Obama administration has continued the longstanding US policy of rejecting the rights of the Palestinian people

For as long as people have been working to bring peace to areas suffering long-standing, violent conflict, there have also been those working to spoil this peace. These "spoilers" work to disrupt the peace process, and often this disruption takes the form of violence on a catastrophic level. Galia Golan and Gilead Sher offer a broader perspective. They examine this phenomenon by analyzing groups who have spoiled or attempted to spoil peace efforts by political or other nonviolent means. By focusing in particular on the Israeli-Arab conflict, this collection of essays considers the impact of a democratic society operating within a broader context of violence. Contributors bring to light the surprising efforts of negotiators, members of the media, political leaders, and even the courts to disrupt the peace process, and they offer coping strategies for addressing this kind of disruption. Taking into account the multitude of factors that can lead to the breakdown of negotiations, Spoiling and Coping with Spoilers shows how spoilers have been a key factor in Israeli-Arab negotiations in the past and explores how they will likely shape negotiations in the future.
