Описание: Theory and Application in Sociology: Readings on Contemporary Issues introduces readers to overarching theoretical paradigms in sociology through current, high-interest readings in the dis-cipline. Selected from a variety of sources, each reading engages students in thinking about the social world from a particular theoretical perspective and helps them understand how that perspec-tive is then applied. The reading selections explore social issues in the United States that students see and hear about every day, such as poverty, homelessness, education, healthcare, the environment, and crime. The material illustrates the ways in which these larger societal occurrences and policies impact students' life experiences and opportunities. Students learn how race, class, and gender shape their interaction in the world, and how different sociologists view those interactions based on their different sociological perspective.Effectively linking real-world experiences to both theory and scholarship, Theory and Application in Sociology is an excellent choice for sociology courses, as well as those in social justice and public policy.
Описание: Seeing Social Problems: Readings on Contemporary Issues in the United States provides students with engaging, thought-provoking articles that examine a wide array of current social issues, the types of behaviors that perpetuate such problems, and how these issues affect the daily lives of Americans. Students are invited to critically consider how key issues have evolved and changed over time and to devise new ways for society to improve, both as people and as a nation. The reader is divided into eight sections. Opening sections address socioeconomic inequality and poverty; racial and ethnic inequality; gender inequality and homophobia; and crime. Later sections explore social problems related to medicine and health, families, education, and the environment. The revised first edition features up-to-date information on several important issues, including race, gender, crime, health care, drug abuse, and pollution. Recent developments related to the Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements, Obamacare, and environmental justice are addressed. A new reading concerning the American opioid crisis has also been added. Developed to inspire critical thought and a greater understanding of contemporary issues, Seeing Social Problems is an ideal resource for courses in sociology.

The purpose of Chinese Philosophy and Contemporary Aesthetics is simple and straightforward: to discuss empty, nothing, opening, white, nature color, blankness, and different delicate senses, in ink-water painting and calligraphy, around discourses of poetics, philosophy ideas, and art critics.
Because xu has inner plasticity and re-generation, which are crucial for its aesthetic discourse, the relation between "nature" or "naturalness" and "emptiness" approaches a fundamental question of modernity—the relation between event revolution and "silent transformation."
In recent decades the previously assumed dominance within the international art world of western(ized) conceptions of aesthetic modernity has been challenged by a critically becalming diversification of cultural outlooks widely referred to as 'contemporaneity'. Contributing to that diversification are assertions within mainland China of essential differences between Chinese and western art.
In response to the critical impasse posed by contemporaneity, Paul Gladston charts a historical relay of mutually formative interactions between the artworlds of China and the West as part of a new transcultural theory of artistic criticality. Informed by deconstructivism as well as syncretic Confucianism, Gladston extends this theory to a reading of the work of the artist Zhang Peili and his involvement with the Hangzhou-based art group, the Pond Association (Chi she). Revealed is a critical aesthetic productively resistant to any single interpretative viewpoint, including those of Chinese exceptionalism and the supposed immanence of deconstructivist uncertainty. Addressing art in and from the People's Republic of China as a significant aspect of post-West contemporaneity, Gladston provides a new critical understanding of what it means to be 'contemporary' and the profound changes taking place in the art world today.
