The ‘global’ turn in historical research has yet to fully incorporate the African continent. This series aims to promote historical scholarship which addresses the global connections which shaped African histories; theories and methods of doing Africanist global history; and studies of the limitations of global history from an Africanist perspective.
Africa in Global History welcomes (but is not limited to) monographs and edited volumes which tackle the themes of intervention and development, migration and colonial inter-connections, and trade and labour. Throughout much of modern African history, actors have been focused on visions of African futures. In these visions, supposedly ‘traditional’, ‘backward’ or ‘under-developed’ societies would be replaced. This book series addresses this long history of interventions into African societies from both internal and external groups. The series will trace changing patterns of migration, often associated with the establishment of new settlements and colonies, or changing trade or labour relations. By taking a comparative approach, the series will also intervene into the pressing debates on nationalism, nationalist sentiment and xenophobia (in all its complications); tradition and neo-traditionalism; and the historical processes which shaped Africa’s place in the world.
The books in this series will both address the particular, regional manifestations of this phenomenon, disaggregating the monolithic notion of ‘Africa in the World’, but also examine ways that ‘Africa as a country’ has been created through discourses of civilisation, improvement and development.
We particularly encourage submissions from Africa-based scholars, and we are committed to exploring innovative new methods to support publication. One of the objectives of this series would be to support African scholars to create new research collaborations and publish their research.

Описание: Ever since the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo, or DRC) was released into independence by Belgium, in June 1960, its skies have been full of action. During the crisis, and immediately afterwards, the Belgians evacuated their colonists and military personnel.Hardly was this action was over when the mineral-rich province of Katanga attempted to break away and the separatists created their own air force, the Force Aerienne Katangaise (FAK), which existed from 1960 until 1963 and saw action against forces of the United Nations (UN). In line with decisions by its members, the UN deployed contingents from several air forces of its member states to protect the integrity of the DR Congo and eliminate the FAK.In response to the emergence of leftist insurgencies, the CIA created the Congo Air Force (or Force Aerienne Congolaise), staffed entirely by foreign mercenary personnel due to the lack of native pilots and mechanics. In 1964-1965, this service saw action during the so-called ‘Simba Rebellion’, in eastern DRC, and in support of government and mercenary forces. In 1964, the Belgians launched their daring operation ‘Red Dragon’, during which their Parachute Regiment was deployed to liberate hostages held by the Simbas in Stanleyville. Finally, in eastern Congo in 1967, the former ‘brothers-in-arms’ – including pilots of the FAC – fought each other during the famous mercenary mutiny. From the existence of a colonial air force attached to the Belgian military and civilian colonial administration during the time before Congo’s independence (June 1960), to the involvement of the Central Government Congo Air Force in fighting against mercenary mutinies in Eastern Congo (1966-67), Volume I of “Air Wars over The Congo” provides detailed coverage of the aircraft and air forces involved in an entire series of conflicts in this huge country.Illustrated with over 100 photographs, 15 colour profiles and half a dozen maps, it offers a unique source of reference for enthusiasts and professionals alike.

A remarkable woman's passion to reach lost souls with the Gospel takes her (and her typewriter) across the eastern US singing with a trio, then to sail under wartime black-out conditions in 1941 to a bush station deep in the forest of colonial Belgian Congo. Her letters home to Hector, her Canadian sweetheart, her mother, sisters and supporters are filled with adventure, love, faith and inspiration. The story coming from the letters is a heartwarming account of a loving wife and mother of six boys triumphing over personal and family illness and tragedy. Five years before her death she wrote, "I want the dew of heaven to be in my letters as well as in my life."
"This is a fascinating book about an amazing woman and the God she loved. Extremely well researched and documented, Lovingly, Ione tells the story of a brave and gifted woman whose life of sacrifice left a lasting mark on the world. It is also a treasure trove of history that paints a captivating picture of life in the early to mid-20th century. I am honored to lead a ministry that has been enriched by such a godly couple as Hector and Ione McMillan, and the many who have followed in their footsteps." - Dale Losch, President of Crossworld, 2020

Описание: From roughly 1818 to 1867, Faku was ruler of the Mpondo Kingdom located in what is now the north-east section of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Because of Fakus legacy, the Mpondo Kingdom became the last African state in Southern Africa to fall under colonial rule. When his father died, Faku inherited his power. In a period of intense raiding, migration and state formation, he transformed the Mpondo polity from a loosely organized constellation of tributary groups to a centralized and populous state with effective military capabilities and a prosperous agricultural foundation. In 1830, Faku allowed Wesleyan missionaries to establish a station within his kingdom and they became his main channel of communication with the Cape Colony, and later Natal. Ironically, he never showed any serious inclination to convert to Christianity. From the 1840s to early 1850s, this Mpondo king played a central, yet often understated, role in the British colonization of South Africa. While over the years his territory and power declined, Faku remained quite astute in diplomatic negotiations with colonial officials and used his missionary connections to optimum advantage. Timothy J. Stapletons narrative and use of oral history paint a clear and remarkable portrait of Faku and how he was able to manipulate missionaries, neighbours, colonists and circumstances to achieve his objectives. As a result, Faku: Rulership and Colonialism in the Mpondo Kingdom (c.1780-1867) helps illuminate the history of the entire Cape region.
