Описание:
Economic Reforms in SAARC Countries presents a cross-country comparison of development indicators in the SAARC countries with respect to the recent Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization (LPG). Presenting an empirical analysis, the book brings in the theoretical background relating to the growth of public expenditure as articulated by Adolf Wagner and other researchers in the 19th and early 20th centuries along with the Displacement Effect Hypothesis as advanced by Peacock and Wiseman in the mid-20th century. This book re-examines these theories and the views of researchers with respect to the changes in economic policies and studies the relevance of these in the present context. The book re-interprets the theories in the light of the impact of policy changes with time series analysis highlighting the changes in the structure of the estimated equation using dummy variables.
The book discusses the differential growth of a few macro-economic variables in the SAARC countries with respect to time in the pre- and post-LPG period. It examines the determinants of development indicators in the post-LPG period identifying the most important determinants.

Описание: Zahid Shahab Ahmed evaluates the progress of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). This study goes beyond economic integration to present a detailed appraisal of cooperation under the overarching themes of economic cooperation, environmental security, human welfare, and cooperation in security matters.
The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is an international organization comprised of the eight countries in South Asia. This work aims examine the institutional structure, objectives and effectiveness of the SAARC in its role as South Asia's leading regional institution.
Drawing on original research it offers a fresh and accessible account of SAARC, arguing that South Asia forms a unique regional security complex that enables certain forms of regional cooperation and bars cooperation on other issue areas.
The text provides a comprehensive introduction to the SAARC, describing the historical developments that lead to its formation and examining key issues such as:
The inner workings of Regional Centres and, their success in implementing the decisions reached at SAARC summits.
How SAARC has sought to address critical new security challenges, such as health pandemics, terrorism, energy security
South Asia's economic cooperation and the South Asia Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA)
Challenges that expansion pose to the organization, particularly China's suggestion to expand beyond the traditional borders of South Asia
The work aims to evaluate what scope there is for formal institutions like SAARC to provide a permanent regional security architecture within which South Asian countries can effectively address important issues, and will be of great interest to all students and scholars of Asian security studies and institutions in general and students and scholars of international relations in South Asia in particular.

Описание: This book traces economic and political issues through SAARC's thirty-year journey.
Topical and well-researched, this collection provides a comprehensive assessment of SAARC and provides policy directives for the future. The book points out the issues and constraints that have hindered regional cooperation in South Asia. It establishes that despite being democracies, there has been little effort by member nations to promote regional cooperation in the public domain.
It stresses that in view of the increased role that countries wish to play in globalisation, economic cooperation is the way forward. The book further argues that political will is the pivot on which the prospect of regional cooperation revolves.

Описание: This volume offers to compare and explain variances of regionalism in Asia by disclosing the distinctive features of regional arrangements and how they evolved during the 1990s and 2000s against the background of a changing global environment. Moreover, it takes up a genuinely ‘inter-Asian’ perspective. By analysing and comparing diverse manifestations of regional integration agreements across Asia and its different sub-regions, it sets out to track their common characteristics and sub-regional facets with respect to their establishment, design and consequences. In addition, political processes accompanying their negotiation and implementation are scrutinized. The analysis encompasses nine case studies written by renowned scholars who together as a group combine an extraordinary mixture of different disciplinary backgrounds as well as expertise on shapes and processes of regional integration in different parts of Asia. The case studies seize on some of the most important features and controversial issues characterizing the second regionalism. Such are the emergence and impact of overlapping FTAs, regional financial and sub-regional economic integration and cooperation, power and the politics of regional integration as well as the nexus between conflict resolution, state failure and regional integration.
