Описание: Population growth slowed across the world in the last decades of the 20th century, changing substantially our view of the future. The 21st century is likely to see the end to world population growth and become the century of population aging, marked by low fertility and ever-increasing life expectancy. These trends have prompted many to predict a gloomy future caused by an unprecedented economic burden of population aging. In response, industrialized nations will need to implement effective social and economic policies and programs. This is the final volume in a series of three. The papers included explore many examples and strengthen the basis for effective economic and social policies by investigating the economic, social, and demographic consequences of the transformations in the structures of population and family. These consequences include changes in economic behavior, both in labor and financial markets, and with regard to saving and consumption, and intergenerational transfers of money and care.

Описание:

In Re-Union, David Madland explores how labor unions are essential to all workers. Yet, union systems are badly flawed and in need of rapid changes for reform. Madland's multilayered analysis presents a solution—a model to replace the existing firm-based collective bargaining with a larger, industry-scale bargaining method coupled with powerful incentives for union membership.

These changes would represent a remarkable shift from the norm, but would be based on lessons from other countries, US history and current policy in several cities and states. In outlining the shift, Madland details how these proposals might mend the broken economic and political systems in the United States. He also uses three examples from Britain, Canada, and Australia to explore what there is yet to learn about this new system in other developed nations.

Madland's practical advice in Re-Union extends to a proposal for how to implement the changes necessary to shift the current paradigm. This powerful call to action speaks directly to the workers affected by these policies—the very people seeking to have their voices recognized in a system that attempts to silence them.

Описание: To a backdrop of ageing societies, pension crises and labour market reforms, this book investigates how the policy shift from early retirement to active ageing has affected individual retirement behaviour. Focusing on eleven European countries, the United States and Japan, it brings together leading international experts to analyze recent changes in pension systems. Their findings demonstrate that there has been a fundamental transition in pension policies and a steep increase in older workers’ retirement ages and employment rates. Yet changes in retirement behavior are not evenly distributed across all societal strata. This raises the serious concern that an overall rise in the retirement age will be accompanied by the re-emergence of social inequality in the transition from work to retirement. This innovative edited collection will appeal to students and scholars of sociology, economics, political science, human resources management, gerontology and social policy, and also to policy-makers and professionals dealing with older workers.

Описание: The Psychology of Aging: Contemporary Research provides students with engaging scholarly articles that dismantle stereotypes commonly associated with aging and demonstrate the possibilities for active participation in later life. The carefully chosen readings expose students to stories of gains, losses, joys, disappointments, and love. The book emphasizes the powerful effect of positivity on health and well-being and shows how a sense of control and empowerment can improve the lives of aging individuals. The anthology is divided into three distinct sections. In Section I, Diversity and Stereotypes of Older Adults, students learn about ageism, how it intersects with sexism, and disparities in the health care system for aging minorities. Section II, The Opportunities of Aging, features readings that discuss the transition from career to retirement, the creative arts and their relation to brain health in later life, financial competence in aging populations, and more. In the final section, Challenges and Changes, students read about family caregiving, depression in elder individuals, accommodating loss, and end-of-life preparation. Collected to provide students with a fresh perspective regarding aging, The Psychology of Aging is an ideal resource for courses in psychology and gerontology.
