Описание: This book is the ultimate guide to the Allagash Wilderness Waterway (AWW) because it covers every aspect of the canoeing/camping experience from the skilled eyes of a seasoned camper, accomplished canoeist and dedicated Eagle Scout. It includes maps based on the map/brochure issued by Maines Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry with permission from the AWW Superintendent. There are over 100 stunning color photos, suggestions of what to bring, where to park, where to put-in and take-out, as well as brief summaries of what to expect at different campsites. It is also a study of contrasts, as the author describes: quiet serene lakes; charging bull moose; terrifying intense winds creating three-foot waves; rainbows over calm water; embedded history of lumbering; spelunking in the Ice Caves; hiking nature trails with beautiful vistas; starring up at the Northern Lights; surviving the white water of Chase Rapids; falling asleep exhausted to the call of a loon, the babbling of a brook or the roar of a waterfall, and so much more. The AWW is an extremely remote, nature sanctuary that has won the authors heart. He hopes the guidance and advice in his book will allow others to canoe this wilderness paradise with confidence and insight, as they are reminded of Henry David Thoreaus quote: ...in wildness is the preservation of the world.

Описание:
In 1604, when Frenchmen landed on Saint Croix Island, they were far from the first people to walk along its shores.
For thousands of years, Etchemins--whose descendants were members of the Wabanaki Confederacy--had lived, loved and labored in Down East Maine. Bound together with neighboring people, all of whom relied heavily on canoes for transportation, trade and survival, each group still maintained its own unique cultures and customs. After the French arrived, they faced unspeakable hardships, from "the Great Dying," when disease killed up to 90 percent of coastal populations, to centuries of discrimination. Yet they never abandoned Ketakamigwa, their homeland. In this book, anthropologist William Haviland relates the history of hardship and survival endured by the natives of the Down East coast and how they have maintained their way of life over the past four hundred years.
Hubbard and his travel companion, "The Captain" - the 1881 version of Bryson and Katz in "A Walk in the Woods."
Written in the spirit of Thoreau's, "The Maine Woods" - this is a classic book about nature, wildlife, and exploring.
In the September of 1881, Lucius L Hubbard and "The Captain," set off with their Indian guides, Silas and Joe, for a month-long, 160-mile canoe trip in the Maine north woods. In this text, Hubbard captures the details of their trip from Greenville, at the south end of Moosehead Lake, to Edmundston, New Brunswick. The book describes the scenery, their meals, the wildlife, and what they encountered along the trail.
In this new 2020 annotated edition we have included updated notes and new photographs of the area of Maine where the trip took place. The original engraved etchings are digitally mastered from an original 1884 copy of the book.
Hubbard wrote this about the adventure, "The keen enjoyment of many hours had made ample amends for the few hardships we had undergone, while the lessons we had had of Nature's teaching will form a priceless treasure-book, of which, when we are far removed from her schoolhouse, we may turn the leaves anew, and read again and again the story we had conned."
I am sure readers will treasure this story today, as much as Hubbard treasured the Maine woods that he so carefully describes within these pages.
