Описание: Paris on the Brink vividly portrays the City of Light during the tumultuous 1930s. The decade was marked by violence at home and the rise of Hitler abroad, even as glamour prevailed in fashion and Surrealism sparked new forms of artistic creativity. Through rich illustrations and evocative narrative, Mary McAuliffe brings this vibrant era to life.

The New York Times-bestselling author of Find Me and Call Me by Your Name returns to the essay form with his collection of thoughts on time, the creative mind, and great lives and works
Irrealis moods are a category of verbal moods that indicate that certain events have not happened, may never happen, or should or must or are indeed desired to happen, but for which there is no indication that they will ever happen. Irrealis moods are also known as counterfactual moods and include the conditional, the subjunctive, the optative, and the imperative--all best expressed in this book as the might-be and the might-have-been. One of the great prose stylists of his generation, Andr Aciman returns to the essay form in Homo Irrealis to explore what time means to artists who cannot grasp life in the present. Irrealis moods are not about the present or the past or the future; they are about what might have been but never was but could in theory still happen. From meditations on subway poetry and the temporal resonances of an empty Italian street to considerations of the lives and work of Sigmund Freud, C. P. Cavafy, W. G. Sebald, John Sloan, ric Rohmer, Marcel Proust, and Fernando Pessoa and portraits of cities such as Alexandria and St. Petersburg, Homo Irrealis is a deep reflection on the imagination's power to forge a zone outside of time's intractable hold.
Описание: "The H(uman)MBA, Lessons from the Classics of Literature and Philosophy you don't learn in business schools" is a unique approach to linking lessons from great books to our daily reality in business, organisations and life at large. A set of thirty-nine topics collected by the author throughout his global career in six continents, each topic with quotes extracted from thirty-nine classics, and a simple guide to help you write book number forty, "your own book of purpose". At a time when humanity, human values, and our planet are faced with so many threats, The H(uman)MBA is a humanistic call to reflection, looking back at the classics to help managers and leaders build a more humane future. Each chapter is deliberately short and contains: - A brief description of the topic in question, hardly taught in a business school. - A reference to the classic book chosen to illustrate the topic. - A few quotes or excerpts from the book in question, and... - A brief guideline for reflection, discussion or debate. Growth, productivity, efficiency, only for the sake of profit are not chapters found in The H(uman)MBA. On the other hand, the management of dilemmas, obsessions, adversity, coping with failure, stoicism and many more are an integral part of this personal, yet universal collection of topics. Economic success and purpose are not contradictory. The 40th book is your own book of purpose which you can write around the humanistic values that you select from the ones presented. The exercise may not necessarily make you a better manager or leader. However, it will help you become a better, more humane person, and better persons make better leaders.
Three luminary teachers unfold a compelling series of dialogues on inner freedom--what it is and how to cultivate it in ourselves and others.
We are, nearly all of us, writes Matthieu Ricard, the playthings of our whims, conditioning, impulses, inner conflicts, wandering thoughts, and afflictive emotions. This servitude is at the root of much that torments us. How do we free ourselves from the prison of these mental mechanisms, in the face of which we often feel helpless, even resigned? With their acclaimed book In Search of Wisdom, these three gifted friends--a monk, a philosopher, and a psychiatrist--shed light on our universal quest for meaning, purpose, and understanding. Now, in this new in-depth offering, they invite us to tend to the garden of our true nature, freedom. Turn by turn, each shares his own unique perspective on the various obstacles to inner freedom, the "ecology" of freedom, the ways to cultivate it, and the harvest that comes out of it. What emerges is a panoramic vision and roadmap for us to overcome the barriers that hinder our liberation. It is our hope, they write, that this book will provide clarification of the means for freeing ourselves from the causes of suffering. Filled with unexpected insights and specific strategies, Freedom for All of Us presents an inspiring guide for breaking free of the unconscious walls that confine us.

Описание: mile Andr offered this definitive, stripped down version of his combative system in 1905. A manual dedicated especially to "workingmen and clerks who have to traverse the rough edges of Paris", 100 WAYS TO DEFEND YOURSELF IN THE STREET offers just that - a bare bones path to combative competence for those who just want to get home without getting stomped and robbed. As a simplified system of La Boxe Fran aise it illustrates the used of the peculiar coup du pied bas (low kick), the point kick and the chass kick. These strikes would be useless to a barefoot MMA fighter, but for a man in a solid pair of shoes - well, you need only lace on your heaviest steel toed boots and kick a heavy bag to understand what savate is really about. But smashed ankles and splintered tibias are just the beginning, as the author leads you through a system of locks, holds, strikes and gouges aimed at keeping you alive and in one piece as you make your way across the "ragged edges" of your own town.

Описание:
As is well known, the horror film generally presents a situation where normality is threatened by a monster. From this premise, this book argues that scary movies often create their terrifying effects stylistically and structurally through a radical break with the realism of normality in the form of monstrous theatricality. Theatricality in the horror film expresses itself in many ways. First and foremost, it comes across in the physical performance of monstrosity; the over-the-top performance of a chainsaw-wielding serial killer who performs his nefarious acts to terrify both his victims within the film and the audience in the cinema. Theatrical artifice can also appear as a stagy cemetery with broken-down tombstones and twisted, gnarly trees, or through the use of violently aberrant filmic techniques, or in the oppressive claustrophobia of a single-room setting reminiscent of classical drama. All these are examples of the cinematic theatricality of horror. Any performative element of a film that flaunts its 'difference' from what is deemed realistic or normal on screen might qualify as an instance of theatrical artifice, creating an intense affect in the audience. The artificiality of the frightening spectacle is at the heart of the dark pleasures of horror.
The ultimate goal of 'Theatricality in the Horror Film' is to suggest that the theatricality of horror cinema echoes the genre's roots in ancient tragedy. Like Greek tragedy, horror cinema allows spectators to confront their deepest fears within the safe space of the auditorium, thus affording the audience a cathartic experience. In addition to catharsis, the horror film's dichotomy between the stable status quo of normality and the shockingly disruptive moment of horror also rehearses tragedy's genealogy famously articulated by Nietzsche: the terrifying carnal pleasures of Dionysian excess formalized through a dialectic confrontation with the static Apollonian principles of order, civility and normality. Tragic theatricality, this book contends, is the essence of horror cinema.

BE TRANSPORTED TO THE ANTEDILUVIAN WORLD - AN EPOCH OF GODS AND GIANTS, SERPENTS, AND MORTALS, EACH STRUGGLING FOR SUPREMACY.
On a remote island enclave of the serpents, a lonely young slave, Enok, is torn between loyalties when a shipwreck strands other humans. In the violent clash of races, Enok stands wrongly sentenced for murder. His only hope is to escape with the castaways, a ruthless amazon, the only human he has ever really known, and her mysterious companions, a towering youth of impossible strength, and a shifty crippled serpent.
But in whom should he trust? The besieged sect that enslaved him, or the homicidal kindred who overturned his world? However, the greatest puzzle is that of his origin, and the truth lies vaulted in an ancient monument with otherworldly powers and a mind of its own.
As conflicts rage over the future of this world, a lonesome widow weaves this tale of bygone days, and a gathering audience in the higher realms begins to suspect that the key to all their futures is buried in this tale of the past.
PREPARE YOURSELF FOR AN IMAGINATIVE RETELLING OF THE VERY BEGINNING THAT WILL TAKE YOU BACK TO THE VERY FIRST OF DAYS - AND BEYOND.
