Описание:

This kaleidoscopic collection reflects on the multifaceted world of classical music as it advances through the twenty-first century. With insights drawn from leading composers, performers, academics, journalists, and arts administrators, special focus is placed on classical musics defining traditions, challenges and contemporary scope. Innovative in structure and approach, the volume comprises two parts. The first provides detailed analyses of issues central to classical music in the present day, including diversity, governance, the identity and perception of classical music, and the challenges facing the achievement of financial stability in non-profit arts organizations. The second part offers case studies, from Miami to Seoul, of the innovative ways in which some arts organizations have responded to the challenges analyzed in the first part. Introductory material, as well as several of the essays, provide some preliminary thoughts about the impact of the crisis year 2020 on the world of classical music.

Classical Music: Contemporary Perspectives and Challenges will be a valuable and engaging resource for all readers interested in the development of the arts and classical music, especially academics, arts administrators and organizers, and classical music practitioners and audiences.

Описание:

When the forces of law and order are arrayed before your door pre-dawn, a certain trepidation is in order.

He tried to comb his hair with his fingers as he unchained, unlocked, and through wide his door.

Detective Golczewski was staring at him. He hadn't seen her in months, but they had parted company on cordial terms; she had even given him her card.

But her large dark eyes were fixed on him.

"Detective Golczewski Vonda How are you?"

Her hair was pulled back as always. She had on her hunter green winter coat over a cocoa brown dress that almost matched her skin. It was shot with pine green lightning bolts; the dress, not her skin.

"When they told me the address, I was hoping maybe you'd moved."

"Sorry? Why would I move. I like it here, and I'm beloved by the tenants and Mr. Boghossian. Remember him? Short, gray, Armenian? With black, bushy eyebrows?"

She shook her head; the uniformed officers behind her gnashed their teeth and balled their massive hands in fists.

Vonda pushed past him into the apartment. "Where were you last night?"

He was not awake; he hadn't had his coffee. "What? Wait. I was here. Yeah, I was here all night. Definitely."

Vonda had resisted telling him why he was being interrogated, but it had to be something to do with Mr. Boghossian's new tenant, Eve Smith.

She was petite and fortyish, and had spent the halcyon days of her tenancy smiling, flirting, and asking lots of questions. Which had soon led to a pall being cast over the apartment building. It wasn't hard to discover that all the tenants were afraid of smiling Eve and wanted her gone.

Of course, Gabriel Bergeron wasn't intimidated, but he had no idea what Eve's game was?

"I loved it (even though it made me cry)."--Jojo Moyes

For fans of This Is Us comes a story of a family divided and the secret that can possibly unite them - a life-affirming novel with a twist will break your heart and an ending that will put it together again.

A secret between two sisters.

A lifetime of lies unraveling.

Can one broken family find their way back to each other?

Audrey's dream as a mother had been for her daughters, Jess and Lily, to be as close as only sisters can be. But now, as adults, they no longer speak to each other, and Audrey's two teenage granddaughters have never met. Audrey just can't help feeling like she's been dealt more than her fair share as she's watched her family come undone over the years, and she has no idea how to fix her family as she wonders if they will ever be whole again.

If only Audrey had known three decades ago that a secret could have the power to split her family in two, and yet, also keep them linked. And when hostilities threaten to spiral out of control, a devastating choice that was made so many years ago is about to be revealed, testing this family once and for all.

Once the truth is revealed, will it be enough to put her family back together again or break them apart forever?

"Utterly compelling and completely heartbreaking. I couldn't put it down."
-- Ruth Hogan

"Totally engrossing, achingly sad and so perceptive about the corrosive legacy of family secrets."--Kate Eberlen, author of Miss You

Описание: A provocative, incisive look at the building of social movements--from the 1600s to the present day--and how current technology is undermining them

We tend to think of revolutions as loud: frustrations and demands shouted in the streets. But the ideas fueling them have traditionally been conceived in much quieter spaces, in the small, secluded corners where a vanguard can whisper among themselves, imagine alternate realities, and deliberate over how to get there. This extraordinary book is a search for those spaces, over centuries and across continents, and a warning that--in a world dominated by social media--they might soon go extinct.

Gal Beckerman, an editor at The New York Times Book Review, takes us back to the seventeenth century, to the correspondence that jumpstarted the scientific revolution, and then forward through time to examine the engines of social change: the petitions that secured the right to vote in 1830s Britain, the zines that first gave voice to women's rage in the early 1990s, even the encrypted apps used by epidemiologists fighting the pandemic in the shadow of an inept administration. In each case, Beckerman shows that our most defining social movements--from decolonization to feminism--were formed in quiet, closed networks that allowed a small group to incubate their ideas before broadcasting them widely. But Facebook and Twitter are replacing these productive, private spaces, to the detriment of activists around the world. Why did the Arab Spring fall apart? Why did Occupy Wall Street never gain traction? Has Black Lives Matter lived up to its full potential? Beckerman reveals what this new social media ecosystem lacks--everything from patience to focus--and offers a recipe for growing radical ideas again.

Lyrical and profound, The Quiet Before looks to the past to help us imagine a different future.

Описание:

Inhabiting the rainforest of the southwest Maracaibo Basin, split by the border between Colombia and Venezuela, the Barí have survived centuries of incursions. Anthropologist Roberto Lizarralde began studying the Barí in 1960, when he made the first modern peaceful contact with this previously unreceptive people; he was joined by anthropologist Stephen Beckerman in 1970. The Ecology of the Barí showcases the findings of their singular long-term study.

Detailing the Barí’s relations with natural and social environments, this work presents quantitative subsistence data unmatched elsewhere in anthropological publications. The authors’ lengthy longitudinal fieldwork provided the rare opportunity to study a tribal people before, during, and after their aboriginal patterns of subsistence and reproduction were eroded by the modern world. Of particular interest is the book’s exploration of partible paternity—the widespread belief in lowland South America that a child can have more than one biological father. The study illustrates its quantitative findings with an in-depth biographical sketch of the remarkable life of an individual Barí woman and a history of Barí relations with outsiders, as well as a description of the rainforest environment that has informed all aspects of Barí history for the past five hundred years. Focusing on subsistence, defense, and reproduction, the chapters beautifully capture the Barí’s traditional culture and the loss represented by its substantial transformation over the past half-century.
