Interview with the Author What was your inspiration to write A Perfumer's Secret?
When I visited France after college, I "discovered" perfume. It seemed so glamorous and French, and the creation aspect fascinated me. To create perfume is to be an artist-and art has always inspired me.
The aspect of an inheritance and the fact that this story takes place in France make your novel sound similar to both A Paris Apartment and The Perfume Collector. What unique treasures will readers find in A Perfumer's Secret?
My novel is a trip to Provence, set to the rhythm of scent. Zoe, the main character, is so passionate about perfume that she sees everything through that lens, offering a fresh perspective of the world around her. In the novel, you'll also find plenty of flower fields, sidewalk cafes, romantic walks along the coast... And there is the excitement of competition, as Zoe tries to win a major fragrance contract.
Would you call this a France romance?
Yes, it's a South of France romance There are actually a few love stories in this novel: mother-daughter relationships, first love, friendship. But the most prominent is the romance between Zoe and Philippe, two perfumers whose passion for perfume turns into passion for each other.

I used to stay at a beautiful, mysterious London hotel for business trips. The dim & elegant setting made me think of romance, clandestine parties, family secrets, midnight encounters, dreams. I wove these elements-with a touch of magic and a bit of the paranormal-into this magical realism romance.
It seems as if it might fall into several genres?
It's contemporary literary fiction / women's fiction, yet includes magical realism and a touch of paranormal romance. Readers say it reminds them of the time travel romance The Time Traveler's Wife and novels by Sarah Addison Allen. I included mystical romance to transport the reader to another place... and to question our notions of reality. And in general, I aim to write fiction that is fast-paced, with surprising plot twists.
What message do you hope readers take with them?
The book deals with facing (or refusal to face) mistakes of the past, healing old wounds and starting over. And for any of us who has ever wondered, "Do I have a soulmate? Will I ever find my soulmate?" this story addresses that in a unique way. Another important theme is (big surprise) destiny. How much control do we have over our own destiny?
What are your favorite genres to read?
I enjoy a wide variety, but my favorites are literary fiction & women's fiction with strong female protagonists. And I like a little twist of paranormal romance.

Interview with the Author What was your inspiration to write Paris, Rue des Martyrs?
City life inspired me. The idea that every day, we might pass the same people as we walk down the street, yet what do we know about their lives? What would happen if our paths crossed? One of my favorite genres is literary fiction, so I decided to write a novel in that vein about life-changing encounters, liaisons and entwined paths.
What kind of story is Paris, Rue des Martyrs?
I hope it will be an emotional read. Paris, Rue des Martyrs is about the importance of encounters. It is a story of family, friendship and coming of age. It is about love and loss, and healing wounds of the past. And it is a Paris love story, of course. It's not your classic Paris romance, but rather a different take of the types of relationships one encounters in this fabulous city: a French affair with a twist.
So many books have been written with Paris as the setting. What sets yours apart?
any books are about the Paris of berets and baguettes. Paris, Rue des Martyrs is about the reality of Paris life... living in a Montmartre neighborhood, sitting at a caf', being Parisian by adoption in this melting pot of a city.
