Words and Dictionaries: A Festschrift for Professor Stanislaw Stachowski on the Occasion of His 85th Birthday, Mańczak-Wohlfeld Elżbieta, Podolak Barbara
Описание: In Soteria: Salvation in Early Christianity and Antiquity , an international team of scholars assembles to honour the distinguished academic career of New Testament scholar Cilliers Breytenbach. Colleagues and friends consider in which manner concepts of salvation were constructed in early Christianity and its Jewish and Graeco-Roman contexts. Studies on aspects of soteriology in the New Testament writings, such as in the narratives on Jesus’ life and work, and theological interpretations of his life and death in the epistolary literature, are supplemented by studies on salvation in the Apostolic Fathers, Marcion, early Christian inscriptions and Antiochian theology. The volume starts with some exemplary studies on salvation in the Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea scrolls, the Septuagint, and popular Graeco-Roman literature and philosophy. Furthermore, some contributions shed light on the ancient cultural background of early Christian soteriological concepts.

Описание: The Festschrift is a collection of papers written in honour of Professor Elżbieta Mańczak-Wohlfeld to mark the occasion of her 70th birthday. Professor Elżbieta Mańczak-Wohlfeld is one of the leading authorities in the field of language contact, and has pursued research on the influence of English on Polish and other European languages, Polish-English contrastive studies, as well as various aspects of English grammar. She has authored more than 160 publications, including four books, as well as course books and academic papers. She has also edited and co-edited dictionaries of English borrowings in Polish. The Festschrift volume comprises papers from the world of linguistics which have been authored by eminent scholars from Poland and abroad. The chapters included in the volume focus on various issues, including those from the area of contact linguistics. The topics covered in the research papers comprise, for instance, the influence of English on different languages, such as Polish, Danish, Afrikaans, Swedish, Spanish, German and Japanese, as well as on Asian languages and cultures. The authors investigate Celtic borrowings in Polish, anglicisms in Serbian, or Yiddish borrowings in contemporary American English. The contributions also discuss the phenomenon of Ponglish, i.e., the communication code used by Poles living in the UK, the presence of foreign languages in the linguistic landscape of Krak w, as well as the problem of multilingualism in Europe, the relation between language, culture and identity, and the influence of globalisation on both Polish language and culture. Finally, selected chapters address a range of phenomena related to Karaim, Russenorsk, and Turkish.
"This collection of invited papers honors Ives Goddard, an outstanding figure in the field of the languages of the Americas as well as in historical linguistics and ethnohistory. Goddard is the single most knowledgeable scholar in historical and comparative Algonquian, a field to which he has been contributing since his undergraduate Harvard thesis; he has also carried out extensive fieldwork on Meskwaki and on the Delaware languages Unami and Munsee. Goddard is also well known for his work editing and translating early indigenous texts, including Wampanoag (in collaboration with Kathleen Bragdon) and Meskwaki texts from the early 20th century written in the Great Lakes syllabary by Alfred Kiyana and other writers. Moreover, Goddard's 1996 map of North American language families has become the new standard for representing the genetic relationships of the languages of the continent.
"The title of this volume, "Webs of Relationship and Words from Long Ago," is a translation of the Meskwaki title of Alfred Kiyana's most metalinguistic text. The twenty essays in this volume by many of Goddard's colleagues and former students all discuss webs of relationships and words from long ago, either or both: papers on many of the Algonquian languages (Plains Cree, Woods Cree, Innu, Arapaho, Menominee, Miami-Illinois, Meskwaki, and a proposed Core Central group), linguistic treatments of other American languages (Iroquoian, Montana Salish, Zapotec), historical analyses of languages in other parts of the world (Tocharian, Latin, Caucasian Albanian, Udi), ethnohistorical or cultural investigations (Passamaquoddy, Wampanoag, Onondaga, exploration of the Upper Mississippi), and a retrospective of the last 40 years of historical study of American Indian languages. "

Dan Ben-Amos famously ushered in the performance turn in folklore studies in the 1970s with his paradigm-changing definition of folklore as "artistic communication in small groups." He went on to make profound contributions to issues of folktale, folk speech, genre, cultural memory, biblical and Jewish folklore, African folklore, and historiography, and gain renown around the world as a leading figure in folklore studies. In Contexts of Folklore, leading lights of folklore studies from many corners of the globe honor Ben-Amos by presenting original studies inspired by his insights. Their essays will assuredly be lasting, provocative statements of folklore research that will energize future generations of folklorists and other scholars of culture and communication.
