Описание: In examining the appropriation of Scripture in 2 Corinthians 4–13, Han argues that the apostle is not only aware of the original contexts of the passages he refers to, but also goes beyond the immediate contexts and brings in the larger context of the Old Testament. In the course of adapting the Scripture, necessary changes of referent occur and Paul appears to use the method of identification in reading the Old Testament. Whether it is Paul himself, the Corinthians or the opponents, various kinds of identification take place with the scriptural writers and the characters mentioned in it. This identification extends even to the point of identifying the Corinthians with the Servant of Isaiah, Jesus and God. From this it is suggested that there is a concept of ‘corporate identity’ present throughout the chapters, which is also seen in the Old Testament. In many cases Paul’s basic thrust is sufficiently clear even without any understanding of scriptural references he makes. This is because Paul often makes a rhetorical use of the Scripture by citing a text at climactic points or near the closing of a section he is developing to strengthen his points, even as he brings in the ‘big picture’ of the Old Testament.

Описание: Research into the social and rhetorical background of the Corinthian church, shows that the Corinthians were evaluating their leaders based on their rhetorical prowess, seeking to associate with those who would enhance their status and honour. The coherence of Paul's argument in 1 Corinthians 1-4 is evaluated, particularly by showing how Paul's discourse of the cross and Sophia relate to the issue of the dissensions in the Corinthian ekklesia. Once demonstrated that there is a misunderstanding of wisdom amongst church leaders at the basis of the dissensions, a redefinition of the wisdom offered in Corinthians is required.
In what could be considered the locus of Paul's theology of proclamation (i.e., 1 Corinthians 2:1-5), he rejects any employment of worldly wisdom in his proclamation of the cross for theological reasons and will not allow himself or other leaders to be drawn into this game of personality cult and honour enhancement.
Such conclusions then raise the question of the role played by Apollos' name in Paul's argument against dissensions. After a review of several possible views, it is concluded-based primarily on exegetical grounds and refusing to engage in hermeneutical speculations-that Paul had a congenial relationship with Apollos. If any distinction is drawn between the two, it was solely the Corinthians' fault, who viewed their preachers in competitive rather than complementary terms.
Описание: Biblical scholars have widely discussed 1 Corinthians, but there has been no consensus on its arrangement and central theme. Malcolm analyses Paul`s rhetoric of `reversal` - why he leaves the topic of the resurrection until the end of the letter. For students of New Testament studies, Pauline theology and early Christianity.

Описание: This Catholic commentary on First Corinthians interprets Scripture from within the living tradition of the Church for pastoral ministers and lay readers alike.
Описание: This study offers a new interpretation of 1 Corinthians 5—11:1. Taking a social identity approach, Ho investigates the inner logic of Paul from the ears of the Corinthian correspondence. Ho argues that Paul consistently indoctrinates new values for the audience to uphold which are against the mainstream of social values in the surrounding society. It is shown that Paul does not engage in issues of internal schism per se, but rather in the question of the distinctive values insiders should uphold so as to be recognisable to outsiders. While church is neither a sectarian nor an accommodating community, it should maintain constant social contact with outsiders so as to bring the gospel of Christ to them. In addition, insiders should practice radical values that could challenge the existing shared social values prevalent in the urban city of Corinth. These new values are based mainly on Scripture, ancient Jewish literature and the new social identity of the church defined by Jesus Christ. This fresh interpretation renders the logical flow, unitary design and coherence of 1 Cor 5 -11.1 more apparent.
Описание: Michael Lakey explores the theological significance of the rituals of Baptism and the Lord's Supper in Pauline theology, with the argument culminating in an analysis of the significance of ritual dining in 1 Corinthians 10:14-22 and the Lord’s Supper in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. By contrast with ‘social world’ forms of comparison between rituals in the Pauline communities and other communities in antiquity, this study focuses primarily upon the theologically integrating function these rituals perform in relation to Paul's theology and ethics.Lakey builds upon Clifford Geertz's systemic understanding of religion by showing how, for Paul, Baptism and the Lord's Supper facilitate specific connections between his metaphysics on the one hand, and the form or pattern of life he enjoins upon his churches on the other. This volume considers precisely what - given his theological and ethical premises - Paul's underlying beliefs regarding these ritual events may have been, allowing for a preliminary discussion of specific lines of post-interpretation in the early patristic period.

Описание: Lakey explores the theological significance of the rituals of Baptism and the Lord's Supper in Pauline theology, with particular attention focused on the discussion of the Lord's Supper in 1 Corinthians 11:17ff. When they occur, explorations of ritual in Paul tend to operate according to a 'social world' form of comparison with ritual in other communities in antiquity. By contrast, this study focuses primarily upon the function these rituals perform in relation to Paul's theology and ethics. The primary analytical lenses are taken from social scientific studies of ritual, and in particular from Clifford Geertz's analysis of symbols. Lakey builds upon Geertz's insight by showing how, for Paul, Baptism and the Lord's Supper facilitate specific connections between his metaphysics on the one hand, and the form or pattern of life he enjoins upon his churches on the other. The investigation considers what, given his theological and ethical premises, Paul's underlying beliefs regarding these ritual events may have been, thereby setting the scene for a preliminary discussion of specific lines of post-interpretation in the early patristic period.

Описание: Interprets the often overlooked metaphor of apostles as divinely appointed administrators (oikonomoi) and assesses the complicated and multifaceted nature of authority in Paul. This study will appeal to academic researchers and graduate students of New Testament studies, Pauline theology and those interested in the Graeco-Roman context of early Christianity.
Описание: Aernie examines the prophetic material in the Old Testament and its relationship with the prophetic material in Second Temple Judaism, Hellenism, and the early Christian movement. The subsequent analysis of 1 Corinthians constitutes an investigation of the effect of the Old Testament prophetic tradition on Paul's self-presentation in 1 Cor 9.15-18, and the rhetorical framework in 1 Cor 14.20-25 as a methodological foundation for the exegetical analysis of 2 Corinthians. Aernie explores the influence of the Old Testament prophetic tradition on Paul's apostolic self-presentation and rhetoric in 2 Corinthians. The analysis of Paul's self-presentation examines the apostle's relationship with Moses, the Isaianic servant, and Jeremiah in order to define Paul's position with regard to the preceding prophetic tradition. Aernie analyses Paul's argument in 2 Cor 2.14-16; 4.1-6; 6.14-7.1; 12.1-10, and then seeks to examine the influence of the Old Testament prophetic tradition on the formation of Paul's rhetorical framework. Aernie's intention is to provide support for the notion that the particularly prophetic nature of Paul's apostolic persona affects both his self-presentation and rhetorical agenda in 2 Corinthians.
