Описание: In the beginning of the twentieth century, the Connecticut River Valley was a thriving manufacturing hub for fabric, arms and brass. But early in the spring of 1936, nearly two feet of rain created havoc on a massive scale, killing more than one hundred people and leaving tens of thousands homeless, unemployed and without power for weeks. Patrols were conducted in rowboats on city streets. Typhoid and other public health issues complicated recovery efforts. Adjusted for todays standard, damage estimates exceeded $9 billion, and the flood helped launch FDRs Flood Control Act of 1936. Dams, reservoirs and dikes were constructed to control future flooding. Much of that system now remains in place but has gone largely unmaintained. Author Josh Shanley recounts the greatest flood in New England history and examines the potential for future floods.

Описание: [From 1647-1663 eleven people were hanged as witches on the New England frontier, in the Connecticut River Valley. The outbreak of witch hunting in New England was directly influenced by the English Civil War and the witchcraft trials begun in 1644 led by the witch-hunter Matthew Hopkins in East Anglia, England. The authorities in New England were armed with a legal manual influenced by recent English demonological writings for identifying a witch and new techniques pioneered by Hopkins for examining witches. This book examines why the witch hysteria first erupted in the Connecticut River Valley. The accounts from this first outbreak of witch hunting included information on the devil`s role, demonic possession, bewitchment, apotropaic magic, witch accusations, legal issues, and the role of the clergy in these trials. These early witch hunting accounts later influenced contemporary writers on the Salem witch trials in 1692. This study offers a fresh assessment of the first outbreak of witch accusations, trials and executions in the Connecticut River Valley. It discusses the witchcraft trials before Salem and the reasons for the continued witch hunting that led to the executions of convicted witches up to 1663. After 1663 the hanging of witches was ended in Connecticut. The book concludes with a discussion as to why these executions ceased and how the local communities resolved the continuing conflict over their fear of witches in the face of a progressive magistracy unwilling to try and convict witches. Apotropaic magic is examined with evidence linking some aspects to specific occupations. The source of the Connecticut document "Grounds for Examination of a Witch" is identified.]

Описание:

West along the River 3 is a five-year compilation of essays and musings on the nature and history of the middle Connecticut River Valley.

These essays draw on the lore and oral histories of local characters in the many surrounding villages, including tales from the wild days of river log drives, several infamous and lingering memories of local witchery, a hometown hero from the early days of Red Sox baseball, whimsical observations of the earliest days on the New England frontier of the 1700's.

The author recounts poignant adventures of summers in France and Brittany, wanderings through the countryside of Ireland and Spain, his return to his ancestral home on the banks of the Millers River in western Massachusetts.

Several chapters record the renewal of Native American presence in this region, and serve as a source of record, describing the ground-breaking work undertaken by local communities and tribes to uncover the multiple perspectives on events that occurred in this region during King Philip's War.

This eclectic anthology of nature writings, dwelling somewhere on the boundaries of poetry and prose, provides a calm and zen-like sanctuary for the reader. Some have chosen to read the essays aloud, and others, to escape the intrusive nature of the daily news cycle, choose to set aside time to read these stories during moments of quiet reflection.
