The Destroyer Escort was the smallest ocean-going escort built for the United States Navy--a downsized destroyer with less speed, fewer guns, and fewer torpedoes than its big brother, The Fleet Destroyer. Destroyer escorts first went into production because the Royal Navy needed an escort warship which was larger than a corvette, but which could be built faster than a destroyer. Lacking the shipyards to build these types of ships in Britain, they ordered them in the US. Once the US unexpectedly entered World War II, its navy suddenly also needed more escort warships, even warships less capable than destroyers, and the destroyer escort was reluctantly picked to fill the gap. Its primary concern is how a nation such as the People's Republic of China can defeat a technologically superior opponent (such as the United States) through a variety of strategies. Rather than focusing on direct military confrontation, this book instead examines a variety of other means. Such means include using International Law (see Lawfare) and a variety of economic means to place one's opponent in a weakened position and circumvent the need for direct military action.
Of the various strategies discussed perhaps the most relevant is that of attacking networks. Networks are increasingly important in not only data exchange but also transportation, financial institutions, and communication. Attacks that disable networks can easily hamstring large areas of life that are dependent on them for coordination. One example of network warfare would be shutting down a network that supplies power. If there is a significant failure in the power grid caused by the attack, massive power outages could result, crippling industry, defense, medicine, and all other areas of life.

True story of the firsthand account of my tour of duty. From March 7, 1970, to January 30, 1971, with the First Cavalry, a rifleman with Charlie Company, First Battalion, Fifth Cavalry. Beginning with the pacification program to the May-and-June invasion into Cambodia, combat assaults and search-and-destroy missions into enemy sanctuaries. Next, my unit followed along the Ho Chi Mihn trail in search of COSVN headquarters for the NVA Army. This involved capturing enemy caches. One in particular, nick-named The City, capturing a major rice cache while being pinned down for a week. We operated out of two dozen firebases during my tour of duty with Charlie Company, and continued search-and-destroy operations in several provinces in III Corps Vietnam, including Tay Ninh. I was dealing with booby traps, ambushes, snakes and crocodiles. The casualties continue to mount up as Charlie Company continues search and destroy operations.
Members of the Nixon Task Force to Southeast Asia report that the Cambodian invasion is the "most important single military achievement of this whole unfortunate war."
