Описание: It is easy to underrate the importance of a sensory system whose receptor is buried deep within the skull and of whose performance we are usually not aware. On the one hand, physiological and anatomical techniques have provided extensive information about the properties of the receptor and of some of the path- ways that link it to the musculature.

Описание: Emily tells her story of getting hit with a vestibular condition (vestibular neuritis and vestibular migraines) seemingly out of the blue, exploring her way through healing, and eventually thriving with her vestibular condition and beyond. She shares an honest and raw account of her mind and body experience in the throes of a vestibular condition, but also reveals that there was a bright light of hope in the dark tunnel and the potential for happiness and joy along the path. This book is her heart and soul transformed into the words, thoughts and feelings that decorated a chapter of her life. Writing is the perfect medium for sharing stories that are harder to tell through the spoken word and this was especially true for Emily when she was lost in the messy middle of a health crisis where she couldn't make sense of how she had even fallen into the chaotic storm or if an exit existed. She shares her path to healing, the overwhelming symptoms, experiences with doctors of western and alternative approaches, her holistic toolkit, a healing diet, climbing her way out of vestibular migraine attacks, and what it took to keep pushing through the darkness to find a grounded state. She made the decision to share her story to divulge everything that once felt broken and to create a path for others who are battling a vestibular something. Emily desperately wanted someone who had been in her shoes (or even a similar pair) to tell her that they had made it through. In this book, she tells the story and offers the support that she needed to hear. Most importantly, she unfolds her journey through the dark and how following the light within her became her guide. This book is to bring a voice to a time when she felt like she had lost hers. It's also to be a voice for the many Vestibular Warriors who deserve to be heard.

Описание: The original intent of the series Studies of Brain Function was to offer a forum to neurobiologists working in different fields to present some of their recent results in a more extensive way.
Описание: The membranous labyrinth lies ('neloHed in the very hard petroua part, of the temporal bone and, as the name implies. it, s structure is extremely compl('x. This may explain why our knowledge of this organ and the vestibular sensory regions within it, is not yet satisfactory. In recent years the rapid development of space research has provided a power- ful stimulus to our interest in the vestibular apparatus. This has found expression in annual symposia, in which the role of thc vestibular organs in the exploration of space is discussed. However, little is known as yet about the inflU
Описание: Vestibular schwannoma is a rare benign tumor arising from VIII cranial nerve. Its localisation into internal auditory canal and cerebello-pontine angle is the main reason for the relevant clinical implication of such disease. This book develops all the features regarding the vestibular schwannoma, starting from the biology of the tumor, passing to the clinical presentation and instrumental diagnostic pathway to make diagnosis and concluding with therapeutic options linked to several factors regarding tumor size, localisation, symptoms, patient characteristics and outcome. The chapters are divided into 3 sections: pathophysiology, clinical features and treatment. Advancements in microsurgical technique and radiosurgery, coupled with an increased understanding of the natural history of the disease, have made modern management of this tumor considerably more complex and the opinions are still divided between conservatism and definitive cure. The last section includes the rehabilitation after treatment of patients affected by vestibular schwannoma. The contributions to this book were done by several eminent expert authors in their field, and all references are up to date. This is a robust resource for residents, fellows, and early attending physicians, as well as mid- to later-career physicians who care for patients with vestibular schwannoma.
Описание: A compilation of research topics from around the world, this book provides the latest knowledge on the neuropathy of the auditory and vestibular eighth cranial nerves, with valuable information on pathophysiology and genetics, new subtypes, and recent research on cochlear implants in patients with auditory neuropathy, including children.
