What was life like on our planet long before the early humans emerged?
Paleontologist Dr. Mark P. Witton draws on the latest twenty-first century discoveries to re-create the appearances and lifestyles of extinct, fascinating species, the environments they inhabited, and the challenges they faced living on an ever-changing planet. A worthy successor to Charles Knight's beloved 1946 classic, Life through the Ages II takes us on an unforgettable journey through the evolution of life on Earth.
Dozens of gorgeous color illustrations and meticulously researched, accompanying commentary showcase the succession of lost worlds, defining events, and ancient creatures that have appeared since the earth was formed, creating an indispensable guide to explore what came before us.

"The book aims to revolutionize the way people think about the economic history of the past two centuries. It may well manage the feat." --The Economist
"Piketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century is an intellectual tour de force, a triumph of economic history over the theoretical, mathematical modeling that has come to dominate the economics profession in recent years." --Steven Pearlstein, Washington Post
"Piketty has written an extraordinarily important book...In its scale and sweep it brings us back to the founders of political economy." --Martin Wolf, Financial Times
"A sweeping account of rising inequality...Piketty has written a book that nobody interested in a defining issue of our era can afford to ignore." --John Cassidy, New Yorker
"Stands a fair chance of becoming the most influential work of economics yet published in our young century. It is the most important study of inequality in over fifty years." --Timothy Shenk, The Nation

Описание: The 2826km-long Danube has a watershed measuring 801,093 km2 that is now shared between 19 countries, from its source in the Black Forest to the Black Sea, into which it pumps an average of 827 km3 of water a year. This book describes and explains key landscape values interactions (geographical, cultural and natural heritage).
Описание: The Danube River is the second longest river in Europe; it flows through ten countries and is 2,850 km in length. In its lower stretches it passes through large lowlands and remains an almost intact natural ecosystem. For 470 km, the river acts as a border between Bulgaria and Romania and provides a refuge for very rich, yet insufficiently studied, biodiversity. The flora and fauna of this area, not far from the Danube Delta biosphere reserve, and its environmental importance are the topics of this book. The book is comprised of 12 separate scientific articles (chapters) that each contain specialized information about key organism groups forming the typical Lower Danube ecosystem. Vertebrate fauna of the study region includes 392 species out of which 83 species are fishes, 19 are amphibians, 15 are reptiles, 201 are birds, and 74 are mammals. Birds are presented in three separate articles with a focus on heron colonies, water birds in the marshlands, and diurnal raptors. Among the invertebrates, several key groups which are comparatively well-studied, are presented, including mollusks; dragonflies and damselflies (in overall 52 species); dipterans of suborder Nematocera (153 species); mayflies (52 species); stoneflies (3 species); and caddisflies (49 species), butterflies (153 species). An article about habitats and typical plants of the Danube plain is also included. The articles all contain information on the status, distribution and ecology of the studys organism groups, and the threats they face. Overall numbers and population trends of some of the presented taxa are also included; 281 maps, 29 graphs, 21 tables and 49 photographs help illustrate various aspects of the collected data. The authors of the articles are well-known and experienced experts on specific organism groups, working mainly out of two institutions of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences: the National History Museum (Sofia) and the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research (Sofia).

Описание: The river Danube is an international waterway flowing 2857 km across Europe from the heights of the Schwarzwald massif down in the Black Sea delta.
Описание: In The European Commission of the Danube, 1856-1948 Constantin Ardeleanu offers a history of the world’s second international organisation, an innovative techno-political institution established by Europe’s Concert of Powers to remove insecurity from the Lower Danube.Delegates of rival empires worked together to ‘correct’ a vital European transportation infrastructure, and to complete difficult hydraulic works they gradually transformed the Commission into an actor of regional and international politics. As an autonomous and independent organ, it employed a complex transnational bureaucracy and regulated shipping along the Danube through a comprehensive set of internationally accepted rules and procedures. The Commission is portrayed as an effective experimental organisation, taken as a model for further cooperation in the international system.
