This volume argues that the notion of "affections" discussed by Jonathan Edwards (and Christian theologians before him) means something very different from what contemporary English speakers now call "emotions." and that Edwards's notions of affections came almost entirely from traditional Christian theology in general and the Reformed tradition in particular. Ryan J. Martin demonstrates that Christian theologians for centuries emphasized affection for God, associated affections with the will, and distinguished affections from passions; generally explaining affections and passions to be inclinations and aversions of the soul. This was Edwards's own view, and he held it throughout his entire ministry. Martin further argues that Edwards's view came not as a result of his reading of John Locke, or the pressures of the Great Awakening (as many Edwardsean scholars argue), but from his own biblical interpretation and theological education. By analysing patristic, medieval and post-medieval thought and the journey of Edwards's psychology, Martin shows how, on their own terms, pre-modern Christians historically defined and described human psychology.

Описание: This book connects “mimetic theory”, as developed by Rene Girard, to the practice of theological reflection within Christian theology. John P. Edwards explores the work of the contemporary, Catholic theologian and ‘Girardian’, James Alison, both as an under-examined bridge for bringing mimetic theory into conversation with Christian theological method and as one of the most compelling and refreshing theological voices of the 21st century. While Alison’s theological corpus is growing steadily, very little work has been done (by him or others) to articulate his own theological method – a method that he describes concisely as a “theology in the order of the discovery” and which Edwards describes as “inductive theology.” Edwards contributes to the ongoing study of Girard by arguing that Alison's theological project outstrips Girard’s application of mimetic theory to theology. He argues that an explicit Christian theological perspective is necessary for providing a fully coherent account of the meaning of "conversion" and "mimetic desire" within a Girardian perspective. Edwards’ development of Alison’s “inductive” theology advances the conversation between mimetic theory and theology, simultaneously serving the growing number of scholars from a range of disciplines already engaged with Girard and opening a new doorway through which more Christian theologians might be enticed to consider Girard and ‘Girardians’ as dialogue partners rich in theological insight.
In 2006, the contemporary American Pentecostal movement celebrated its 100th birthday. Pentecostal theologians increasingly acknowledge that their theological methodology should be informed by a Pentecostal rationality, epistemology and theological hermeneutics. Simo Frestadius offers such a Pentecostal rationality from a Foursquare perspective. Frestadius first analyses and evaluates some of the main contemporary Pentecostal rationalities and epistemologies to date, with a particular emphasis on the works of Amos Yong and James K.A. Smith and L. William Oliverio Jr., before proposing that Alasdair MacIntyre’s tradition-focused and historically-minded narrative approach is conducive in providing a more tradition-constituted Pentecostal rationality. Utilising the methodological insights of MacIntyre, the book then provides a philosophically informed historical narrative of a major British Pentecostal tradition, namely, the Elim Foursquare Gospel Alliance, by exploring its underlying context and roots as a classical Pentecostal movement, its emergence as a religious tradition, and its two major ‘epistemological crises’. Based on this historical narration and analysis, it is argued that Elim’s tacit Pentecostal rationality is best defined as Pentecostal Biblical Pragmatism in a Foursquare Gospel framework. This form of rationality is then developed vis-a-vis Elim’s Pentecostal concept of truth, biblical hermeneutics, and pragmatic epistemic justification in dialogue with William P. Alston.
