Self-protection expert David Kerr teaches his readers how to avoid violence in the first place, and if you can't avoid it or manage escape, how to survive it. Idiots to Monsters details the author's real-life experiences of dealing with virtually the full spectrum of violent persons and situations, including those you, yourself, may likely encounter. Too often, otherwise rationale people let egoism, stupidity, anxieties, or intoxicants spark dangerous confrontations. Kerr discusses how to handle hostile-aggressive individuals, and offers his unconventional advice on confronting school bullying, road rage, and the abusive spouse or boyfriend, as well as how to spot and avoid being a target for criminals and predators. Just as critical, Kerr tells readers what you can do legally to defend yourself, and what you must do if fighting an aggressor is your best or only option. The author also offers practical advice if confronted by a cold-blooded killer, a "monster," who places no value on your life or those of your kids', be it a school or workplace shooter, a potential domestic terrorist, or an intruder in your home.
Additionally, anyone exploring self-defense instruction will find the author's review of various martial arts and self-protection systems to be essential reading, including advice and opinions regarding the use of weapons for self-defense.
Kerr's insights are especially useful for teens as well, explaining the psychology of fights and sexual aggression, as well as how to survive potential violence at concerts, sporting events, and off-campus parties.
Описание: This open access book applies insights from the anthropology of hospitality to illuminate ethnographic accounts of migrant reception in various parts of the Mediterranean.
Felony conviction and mass incarceration attract considerable media attention these days, yet the most common criminal-justice encounters are for misdemeanors, not felonies, and the most common outcome is not prison. In the early 1990s, New York City launched an initiative under the banner of Broken Windows policing to dramatically expand enforcement against low-level offenses. Misdemeanorland is the first book to document the fates of the hundreds of thousands of people hauled into lower criminal courts as part of this policing experiment.
Drawing on three years of fieldwork inside and outside of the courtroom, in-depth interviews, and analysis of trends in arrests and dispositions of misdemeanors going back three decades, Issa Kohler-Hausmann argues that lower courts have largely abandoned the adjudicative model of criminal law administration in which questions of factual guilt and legal punishment drive case outcomes. Due to the sheer volume of arrests, lower courts have adopted a managerial model--and the implications are troubling. Kohler-Hausmann shows how significant volumes of people are marked, tested, and subjected to surveillance and control even though about half the cases result in some form of legal dismissal. She describes in harrowing detail how the reach of America's penal state extends well beyond the shocking numbers of people incarcerated in prisons or stigmatized by a felony conviction.
Compelling and innovative, Misdemeanorland shows how the lower reaches of our criminal justice system operate as a form of social control and surveillance, often without adjudicating cases or imposing formal punishment.

Описание: This brief examines the interaction and synergy between the philosophical concepts embedded in the ideas of Community Oriented Policing (C.O. P.) and urban security aided by technological innovations. While the philosophy of C.O.P. stresses the importance of collaboration between members of the public and its police forces technology that is becoming rapidly integrated in various police tactics creates new legal challenges and operational hurdles. This approach, coined as "Next Generation Community Policing", is discussed through the chapters of the brief and illustrated with examples from a number of different countries and their approaches to this topic. This Brief will be of interest to researchers in criminology and criminal justice, particularly in police studies, as well as related fields such as urban security planning and sociology.
