Описание: When leaded gasoline was invented first developed in the 1920s, medical experts were quick to warn of the public health catastrophes it would cause. Yet government regulators did not heed their advice, and for more than half a century, nearly all cars used leaded gasoline, which contributed to a nationwide epidemic of lead poisoning. By the 1970s, 99.8% of American children had significantly elevated levels of lead in their blood.
Unleaded tells the story of how crusading scientists and activists convinced the U.S. government to ban lead additives in gasoline. It also reveals how, for nearly 50 years, scientific experts paid by the oil and mining industries abused their authority to convince the public that leaded gasoline was perfectly harmless.
Combining environmental history, sociology, and neuroscience, Carrie Nielsen explores how lead exposure affects the developing brains of children and is linked to social problems including violent crime, teen pregnancies, and academic failureis linked to social problems including academic failure, teen pregnancies, and violent crime. She also shows how, even after the nationwide outrage over Flint's polluted water, many poor and minority communities and communities of color across the United States still have dangerously high lead levels. Unleaded vividly depicts the importance of sound science and firm strong environmental regulations to protect our nation's most vulnerable populations.

Описание: This book is about the field of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and the unique and special environment of active implants that electrically interface with the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and organs. At the heart of the book is the matter of repairing and rehabilitating patients suffering from severe neurologic impairments, from paralysis to movement disorders and epilepsy, that often requires an invasive solution based on an implanted device. Past achievements, current work, and future perspectives of BCI and other interactions between medical devices and the human nervous system are described in detail from a pragmatic point of view.Reviews the Active Implantable Medical Devices (AIMDs) industry and how it is moving from cardiac to neuro applicationsClear, easy to read, presentation of the field of neuro-technologies for human benefitProvides easy to understand explanations about the technical limitations, the physics of implants in the human body, and realistic long terms perspectives

Описание: This volume provides properties, biological function, methods, and approaches for manipulating nAChRs in different organisms. NicotinicAcetylcholine Receptor Technologies guides readers through moleculartechniques and behavioral tests used to investigate nicotinic drugs, chronoamperometry, emerging technologies and methods for the analysis ofnAChRs, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), fluorescence techniques, spectralconfocal, allosteric modulators of a7-nAChRs, and a comprehensive evolutionalrelation for most nAChR subunits, in both vertebrate and invertebrate species.Written for the popular Neuromethods series, chapters include thekind of detail and key implementation advice that ensures successful results inthe laboratory. Authoritative and practical, Nicotinic AcetylcholineReceptor Technologies aims to ensure successful results in thefurther study of this vital field.
Описание: This book provides readers with an integrative overview of the latest research and developments in the broad field of biomedical engineering. Each of the chapters offers a timely review written by leading biomedical engineers and aims at showing how the convergence of scientific and engineering fields with medicine has created a new basis for practically solving problems concerning human health, wellbeing and disease. While some of the latest frontiers of biomedicine, such as neuroscience and regenerative medicine, are becoming increasingly dependent on new ideas and tools from other disciplines, the paradigm shift caused by technological innovations in the fields of information science, nanotechnology, and robotics is opening new opportunities in healthcare, besides dramatically changing the ways we actually practice science. At the same time, a new generation of engineers, fluent in many different scientific “languages,” is creating entirely new fields of research that approach the “old” questions from a new and holistic angle. The book reports on the scientific revolutions in the field of biomedicine by describing the latest technologies and findings developed at the interface between science and engineering. It addresses students, fellows, and faculty and industry investigators searching for new challenges in the broad biomedical engineering fields.

Описание: 1.1 Mechanism of Action of Glucocorticoid Hormones The current model of glucocorticoid hormone action is summarized in Fig. 1. After synthesis, glucocorticoids are secreted into the blood stream and trans- ported to target cells where they bind with high affinity (K-1O-9M) and d specificity to the intracellular glucocorticoid receptor (GR) protein. The sub- cellular localization of hormone-free GR is still a controversial issue. However, most data support the idea that unliganded GR is in the cytoplasmic compartment or loosely associated with the nucleus (Picard and Yamamoto 1987; Gustafsson et al. 1987 and references therein; LaFond et al. 1988; Gasc et al. 1989). Upon ligand binding, GR is activated into a form capable of interacting with DNA. The mechanism of GR activation probably involves a conformational change and dis- sociation from nonreceptor components, e.g., the 90-kDA heat shock protein (hsp90: Pratt et al. 1988; Bresnick et al. 1989; Denis and Gustafsson 1989). The subcellular location of activated GR has been firmly established to be inside the nucleus. In vivo, the hormone-receptor complex interacts with specific DNA Activation r::: .. qc 3-GC ... &.GC j, BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS " t, Active Protein, Vl\lent.
