Описание: Traces Pound`s intimate engagement with specific occultists (W B Yeats, Allen Upward, Alfred Orage, and G R S Mead) and their ideas. This title argues that speculative occultism was a major factor in the evolution of Pound`s extraordinary aesthetic and religious sensibility, much noticed in Pound criticism.

Описание: Ezra Pound set out to invent and apply a sheath of new techniques and concerns for poetry, a number of which strike the beginning reader of his works as alien. The essays in this casebook introduce a number of essential Poundian concepts, from explaining in some detail Pound`s ideas concerning ways of organizing a long poem, to explicating the worldviews Pound developed and used as matter for his verse epic. The volume provides a selection of key criticism, includingan article newly translated into English.

Описание: Ezra Pound transformed his style of poetry when he wrote The Adams Cantos in the 1920s. But what caused him to rethink his earlier writing techniques? Grounded in archival material, this study explores the extent to which Pound's poetry changed in response to his reading of 17th-century American History and the social climate of the pre-war period. Drawing on the Ezra Pound papers, David Ten Eyck documents the changes to Pound's documentary techniques, establishing a chronology of the composition of The Cantos. His close readings of specific passages, set against the interwar years, allow Ten Eyck to gain insights into Pound's 1930s political and social criticism. Through references to the annotated copy of The Works of John Adams, he explores Pound's engagement with Adams at the expense of Thomas Jefferson: a figure formally at the heart of his previous work. Ultimately, this contextual and archival study uses John Adams and America to unlock the fascist beliefs and the later poetry of Ezra Pound.

Описание: Drawing extensively on archival research, The Late Cantos of Ezra Pound critically explores the textual history of Pound’s late verse, namely Section: Rock-Drill (1955) and Thrones (1959). Examining unpublished letters, draft manuscripts and other prepublication material, this book addresses the composition, revision and dissemination of these difficult texts in order to shed new light on their significance to Pound’s wider project, his methods and techniques, and the structures of authority—literary and political—that govern the meaning of his poetry. Illustrated by reproductions of archival documents, The Late Cantos of Ezra Pound is an innovative new study of one of the most important poets of the 20th century.
Описание: This book uses Ezra Pound’s The Cantos as a lens to understand modernism’s ambition to revolutionize literature through mythical and scientific methods. Homer’s Odyssey plays a unique methodological and structural role in The Cantos. The Cantos translates, interprets, abridges, adapts, critiques, parodies, trivializes, allegorizes, and “ritualizes” the Odyssey. Partly inspired by Joyce’s use of different literary styles or “technics” in Ulysses, and partly inspired by medieval classicism and 19th century philology, Pound uses a plethora of methods to translate Homer and other classical texts. This book argues that The Cantos is a modernist vision of the Matter of Troy, a term used by medieval authors to designate the cycle of texts based on the Trojan war and its aftereffects, including the nostoi (returns) of the Greek heroes.
This is the first study to explore how medieval classicism and translation informs Pound’s mythical method and to systematically outline the variety and evolution of Pound’s Odyssey translations in The Cantos.
