Описание: The role of local people in contemporary nature conservation practices is often poorly understood or neglected. This book, therefore, examines questions of local participation at the nature-society nexus within national parks in the transitional context of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The post-1990 reconfiguration of conservation paradigms in this part of the world has re-opened various age-old debates about the protection and administration of natural heritage. Further complicating the situation has been the introduction of market-based principles, which has embedded the entire process in broader dynamics of neoliberalization and the capitalist space economy. Providing an integrated perspective on why, how and for whom nature conservation practices have been implemented in CEE, this book sheds further light upon the mechanisms through which such practices both redefine and are affected by the everyday life of people living in national parks. Offering a critical global review of the environmental motivations and power interests behind the creation of national parks, as well as a typology of the relations between local people and the dynamics of nature protection in them, this work challenges the dichotomy between developed and developing countries that pervades much of the academic literature on nature protection. Author Saska Petrova highlights the lessons that can be learnt by applying the experiences of local community participation in environmental management in CEE to other locations undergoing major systemic change in their environmental governance practices, such as the 'low carbon transition' that is currently unfolding at a global scale.

Описание: This book consists of several chapters dealing with the issue of environmental preservation of protected areas from a variety of perspectives. Chapter 1 deals with public management policies in Morocco, which in recent years have shifted from focusing on mass tourism to a more sustainable alternative by investing in protected areas, and the various roadblocks the country has faced in its attempt to do so. Chapter 2 focuses on Lar National Park, a protected area located northeast of Tehran, and how best to manage and preserve the areas wildlife in consideration of the needs of native people. Chapter 3 analyzes environmental conservation laws in Nepal in connection with the rights of local people to access resources inside protected areas and proposes policies that would ensure a sustainable coexistence between humans and wildlife. Chapter 4 describes the impact that globalization has had on the introduction of invasive plant species in protected areas and the various ecosystem services these species can provide. Chapter 5 discusses how human society threatens protected areas in Argentina, and how environmental justice studies can contribute to improving the management effectiveness of protected areas considering their relationships with local communities. Chapter 6 details how protected areas can improve human well-being across several dimensions, and Chapter 7 explains how arsenic contamination in fishing resources impacts Brazilian ecology and culture. Finally, Chapters 8 and 9 consider threats to marine protected areas in Brazil and the impacts and challenges of ecotourism in protected areas, respectively.

Описание: This book is a critical analysis of the concept of marine protected areas (MPAs) particularly as a tool for marine resource management. It explains the reasons for the extraordinary rise of MPAs to the top of the political agenda for marine policy, and evaluates the scientific credentials for the unprecedented popularity of this management option. The book reveals the role played by two policy networks – epistemic community and advocacy coalition – in promoting the notion of MPA, showing how advocacy for marine reserves by some scientists based on limited evidence of fisheries benefits has led to a blurring of the boundary between science and politics. Second, the study investigates whether the scientific consensus on MPAs has resulted in a publication bias, whereby pro-MPA articles are given preferential treatment by peer-reviewed academic journals, though it found only limited evidence of such a bias. Third, the project conducts a systematic review of the literature to determine the ecological effects of MPAs, and reaches the conclusion that there is little proof of a positive impact on finfish populations in temperate waters. Fourth, the study uses discourse analysis to trace the effects of a public campaigning policy network on marine conservation zones (MCZs) in England, which demonstrated that there was considerable confusion over the objectives that MCZs were being designated to achieve. The book’s conclusion is that the MPA issue shows the power of ideas in marine governance, but offers a caution that scientists who cross the line between science and politics risk exaggerating the benefits of MPAs by glossing over uncertainties in the data, which may antagonise the fishing industry, delay resolution of the MPA issue, and weaken public faith in marine science if and when the benefits of MCZs are subsequently seen to be limited.
