Описание: Critical stories are narratives that recount the writer’s experiences, situating those experiences in broader cultural contexts. In this volume of Critical Storytelling, marginalized, excluded, and oppressed peoples share insights from their liminality to help readers learn from their perspectives on living from behind invisible bars. Female inmates at Decatur’s Correctional Center and the undergraduate Millikin University students who worked with them come together to give voice to their specific histories of living from behind invisibile bars and pose important questions to the reader about inciting change for the future. Specifically, the voices in this volume seek to expose, analyze, and challenge deeply-entrenched narratives and characterizations of incarcerated women, whose histories are often marked by sexual abuse, domestic violence, poverty, PTSD, a lack of education, housing insecurity, mental illness, and substance addiction. These silenced female inmate voices need to be heard and contextualized within the larger metanarrative of prison literature. Through telling critical stories, these writers attempt to: sustain recovery from trauma, make positive changes and informed decisions, create a real sense of empowerment, strengthen their capacity to exercise personal agency, and inspire audiences to create change far outside the reaches of physical and metaphorical bars.

Описание: In this book, the authors bring together in one place essential information about college students in the US in the 21st century. Synthesizing existing research and theory, they present an introduction to studying student characteristics, college choice and enrollment patterns, institutional types and environments, student learning, persistence, and outcomes of college.
Substantially revised and updated, this new edition addresses contemporary and anticipated student demographics and enrollment patterns, a wide variety of campus environments (such as residential, commuter, online, hybrid), and a range of outcomes including learning, development, and achievement.
The book is organized around Alexander Astin’s Inputs-Environment-Outputs (I-E-O) framework. Student demographics, college preparation, and enrollment patterns are the ""inputs."" Transition to college and campus environments are the substance of the ""environment."" The ""outputs"" are student development, learning, and retention/persistence/completion.
The authors build on this foundation by providing relevant contemporary information and analysis of students, environments, and outcomes. They also provide strategies for readers to project forward in anticipation of higher education trends in a world where understanding “college students in the United States” is an ongoing project. As a starting point for those who seek a foundational understanding of the diversity of students and institutions in the US, the book includes discussion points, learning activities, and further resources for exploring the topics in each chapter.

Berea College, founded in 1855 on the principles of socio-educational equality, is an institution devoted to giving voices to the oppressed. This book, Critical Storytelling during the COVID-19 Pandemic, is a tribute to giving students from a variety of backgrounds a voice for the displacement they felt during the raging spikes of the early pandemic period. Each student offers their take on the pandemic itself, how it affected their education, as well as how it displaced them. From stories of exile to those of triumph, this work is a heralding account of dozens of students' experiences.
Описание: More than a "how-to" on grief and surviving the loss of a child, this is a collection of stories relayed by real parents who have lost a child, and the various ways they coped, survived, and thrived. It will speak directly to readers who have lost a child, under any circumstances, and to the people who love them.
