Описание: "Yezhov Vs. Stalin: The Truth About Mass Repressions and the So-Called 'Great Terror' in the USSR" is the first accurate account of the so-called "Great Terror" in the Soviet Union in 1937-1938. In this book, Grover Furr answers the central questions concerning the mass repressions known as the "Ezhovshchina" or, by anticommunists, the "Great Terror": * What caused it?* Did hundreds of thousands of innocent victims meet their deaths?* Was Joseph Stalin responsible for these murders, as is universally claimed?* If - as the evidence demands that we conclude - Stalin was innocent and in fact put a stop to this massive crime, why were Ezhov and his men able to go on killing many innocent people for more than a year? The present study answers these questions.Grover Furr has studied all the available evidence, most of it from formerly-secret Soviet archives. He offers original translations of key historical documents and detailed analysis of their significance in an important synthesis that effectively reconsiders one of the pivotal events of Soviet history

Описание: This intellectual biography of Nikolai N. Bolkhovitinov (1930-2008), the prominent Russian historian who was a leading scholar of US history and Russia-US relations, also examines broader social, cultural, and intellectual developments within the Americanist scholarly community in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia.
The Russian Revolution and the subsequent establishment of the USSR as a "workers' state" has dominated political thinking for more than three generations.
In the past, it seemed enough for communists to define their radical separation with much of the "left" by denouncing the Soviet Union as state capitalist. This is no longer sufficient, if it ever was. To transform society, we not only have to understand what it is, we have to understand how past attempts have failed.
In What Was the USSR?, the Aufheben Collective explores the inadequacy of the theory of the USSR as a degenerated workers' state and the various versions of the theory that the USSR was a form of state capitalism.
In Making Uzbekistan, Adeeb Khalid chronicles the tumultuous history of Central Asia in the age of the Russian revolution. He explores the complex interaction between Uzbek intellectuals, local Bolsheviks, and Moscow to sketch out the flux of the situation in early-Soviet Central Asia. His focus on the Uzbek intelligentsia allows him to recast our understanding of Soviet nationalities policies. Uzbekistan, he argues, was not a creation of Soviet policies, but a project of the Muslim intelligentsia that emerged in the Soviet context through the interstices of the complex politics of the period. Making Uzbekistan introduces key texts from this period and argues that what the decade witnessed was nothing short of a cultural revolution.

Описание:
The Geography of Nationalism in Russia and the USSR is an important addition to the small library of essential works on the collapse of the Soviet empire. The first attempt to construct and test broad theoretical propositions about "place" and "territoriality" in the making of nations, it examines the critical social processes underlying the formation of nations and homelands in Russia and the USSR during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Robert Kaiser finds that for the most part national self-consciousness was only beginning to supplant a localist mentality by the time of World War I. The national problem faced by Lenin was fundamentally different from the more difficult nationalist challenge that confronted Gorbachev. In Kaiser's place-based theory, the homeland, once created in the imaginations of the indigenous masses, powerfully structured national processes and international relations. "Indigenization" from below became an active competitor with nationality policies that promoted Russification, resulting in the restructuring of ethnic stratification to favor indigenes in their own respective home republics and to challenge Russian dominance outside Russia. The revolutionary changes occurring since 1989, Kaiser argues, should therefore be seen as part of a longer process of indigenization.
