Описание:
Between 2013 and 2015, A Nos Amours presented in London a complete retrospective of the films of the celebrated film-maker Chantal Akerman, the only complete retrospective given to date. Rights and screening copies turn out to be widely scattered and incredibly difficult to access. The research needed to present this retrospective is offered in this book so that others may more easily follow suit.
Also included are the texts, journalism and blogging that was offered to the audience as a means to engage with film-works that are at once radical, wildly varied in style and content, and surprisingly often, on account of their rarity, little known. The book aims to be accurate and a reliable source of detailed information about the films. The book is intended to serve as an Akerman companion and a key reference work.
Many texts are included to provide invaluable insights, from the likes of Raymond Bellour, Richard Brody, Ivone Margulies, Marion Schmid and Ginette Vincendeau.
Laura Mulvey (whose phrase 'the male gaze' has revolutionised film theory) has written the foreword, surveying Akerman's achievement, making use of this book as an aide-m moire for what stands as one of the astonishing bodies of work in all cinema:
"As a collage of writing of many different kinds, the Handbook crucially bears witness to the effect that Akerman has had on the film community, from her earliest movies until her last... The high quality of the texts included in the book are all a reminder of the way that her 'cinematic' qualities have advanced our understanding of film."
A Nos Amours was founded in London by Joanna Hogg and Adam Roberts, to present screenings, events and art shows.

Описание: This generously illustrated volume is the first comprehensive publication devoted to the powerfully expressive work of David Park (1911-60).
Best known as the founder of Bay Area Figurative art, Park moved from Boston to California at the age of seventeen and spent most of his adult life in and around San Francisco. In the immediate postwar years, like many avant-garde American artists, he engaged with Abstract Expressionism and painted non-objectively. In a moment of passion in 1949, he made the radical decision to abandon nearly all of his abstract canvases at the Berkeley city dump and return to the human figure, in so doing marking the beginning of the Bay Area Figurative movement.
The astonishingly powerful paintings he made in the decade that followed brought together his long-held interest in classic subjects such as portraiture, domestic interiors, musicians, rowers, and bathers with lush, gestural paint handling and an extraordinary sense of color. In 1958-59 Park reached his expressive peak, reveling in the sensuous qualities of paint to create intensely physical, psychologically charged, and deeply felt canvases. This fertile period cut short by illness in 1960, Park transferred his creative energy to other mediums when he could no longer work on canvas. In the last months of his life, bedridden, he produced an extraordinary thirty-foot-long felt-tip-pen scroll and a poignant series of gouaches.
Published to accompany the first major museum exhibition of Park's work in more than thirty years, David Park: A Retrospective traces the full arc of the artist's career, from his early social realist and cubist-inspired efforts of the 1930s to his mature figurative paintings of the 1950s and his astounding final works on paper. An overview of Park's full body of work by Janet Bishop, SFMOMA's Thomas Weisel Family Curator of Painting and Sculpture, will be joined by approximately ninety full-color plates of paintings and works on paper; an essay by Tara McDowell on the figure drawing sessions held by Park, Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, Frank Lobdell, and others in their studios starting in 1953; short essays on Park's scroll, his gouaches, and the portraits that Imogen Cunningham and Park made of each other; and an illustrated chronology.
Published in association with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Описание: A CBC New Brunswick Book List Selection"I start with an original object, break it, and transform parts of the piece into other materials. These pieces gather meaning and explanation as I work with them."Peter Powning is simultaneously referred to as a sculptor and a ceramist, but his art does not fit easy categorization, incorporating and combining elements from one medium into another. His work challenges the viewer to reconsider the object, its form, and its function. This inventiveness has resulted in numerous exhibitions, awards, and commissions for public art sculptures throughout Canada.Featuring 175 full-colour images of Pownings work along with essays by curators and critics, Peter Powning celebrates the career of one of Canadas finest visual artists and accompanies a major retrospective exhibition organized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

Описание:
The eerily prescient work of a near-forgotten Japanese artist, whose 1960s and '70s sculptures anticipate contemporary ecological anxieties
Contemplating Japanese artist Tetsumi Kudo's (1935-90) work in the 21st century provokes a sense of the uncanny on multiple levels: grotesquely beautiful on their own, his abject sculptures seem to foretell today's environmental concerns with their depictions of ecological decay. Born in Osaka, Kudo's life was greatly impacted by the aftermath of the atomic bomb in 1945; this trauma compounded by the Vietnam War's ever-present atmosphere of destruction led to a consistent focus on dystopia and decomposition in his work.
Kudo's fluorescent birdcages and blacklight terrariums are furnished with an assortment of sculptures and found objects: melted plastic flowers, colorful phallic chrysalises and dismembered resin body parts come together to convey a distinctly modern anxiety in regard to our ailing world. Kudo's work does not intend to provide comfort in the midst of crisis; rather, his pieces urge viewers to reflect on how we may or may not continue to survive in a world that we ourselves have ruined through pollution and consumerism. As the artist's work reaches a peak of topicality, this volume presents a focused selection of Kudo's pieces from the 1960s and 1970s that demonstrate a postwar awareness of the atomic bomb's effect on reproduction and the environment.
