Описание: Poetry. Women's Studies. In WHAT MY FATHER TAUGHT ME, Maria Giura writes richly and candidly about growing up Italian-American Catholic from her earliest days as the daughter of immigrant parents and a workaholic father to her coming of age and onward into adulthood where she works at reconciling the sensual and spiritual. Her poems are a celebration in the face of love and loss. They are at once intimate and universal, serious and light, and are grounded in the Brooklyn, New York that she cherished and called home: from her parents' pastry shoppe, to the view from the Belt Parkway, to the family living room "where she] learned to pull out the microphone, even though it was always broken, and sing."

Описание:

How long can you keep a dark secret before you become completely unraveled? In What She Was Wearing, Shawn Aveningo Sanders uses poetry, prose, and letters to tell her #MeToo story--one that has taken over 30 years to reveal.

In this collection, Shawn shares her nightmare of being raped at a fraternity toga party, and examines the event from a variety of perspectives, including poems written from the viewpoint of her attackers; the toga she was wearing; homecoming years later; and even the moment she told her college-aged children. As Shawn's story unfolds, the reader will come to understand how significant the aftermath of rape can be. For decades, she was "triggered" in the most unexpected ways and is just now recognizing how those triggers impacted her self-worth.

Inspired by the countless number of women who are bravely opening up to share their truth, she adds her voice to the fight against the oppressive, misogynic times we live in. It's time to stop blaming the victim and to stop asking what she was wearing For Shawn, writing through the pain and sharing these poems has proven to be cathartic and even epiphanic at times. It is her hope this work can help women of all ages face and cope with their own traumas, while letting them know they can indeed heal and go on to enjoy loving, trusting relationships.

Описание: Somehow I think that no matter how many poems I write, it?ll never be enough to capture everything I?m feeling. It's like a camera, you?ll never take the same picture multiple times unless you want something to be clearer. I?m always switching between emotions, as if they were clothes and I needed to constantly wash them. I hope one day that I will be able to write a poem that will fully capture what I have always felt. But maybe if I do that, I?ll never be able to write again. If I?m content, will that be an issue? To never write again? Yet again, I?m left wondering.

Описание: This collection of poetry by West Virginia Poet Laureate Marc Harshman explores the difficulty of living with an awareness of the eventual death of all living things. Each of its four sections suggests a coping mechanism for this inevitable predicament, from storytelling, to accepting darkness and death as a creative force, to enjoying disruption and chaos, and finally to embracing the mystery of life as the most triumphant story of all. These difficulties come ""not quite haphazardly"" and not without a ""last light"" something beyond and as ""sweet as apples"". With these moments of grace, Harshman taps into the satisfying richness that comes from unexpected revelations, helping us rise above the fragile recesses of life and death, all while portraying the lost rural worlds of the Midwest and Appalachia in ways untouched by sentiment or nostalgia.

Описание:

Dianne Borsenik brings her second full-length book of poetry to Stubborn Mule, and we are beyond thrilled with this elegant book of poems. She is a modern master of form, with abecedarians, acrostics and more, you will struggle to find the form with her astonishing ability to put content first and form second. The book of "ragas" is divided into Sitar, Shehnai, Bansuri, and Tabla and creates a beautiful rhythm throughout.

Dianne Borsenik is active in the northern Ohio poetry scene, and travels to perform her work throughout the Midwest. Her poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including Rosebud, Slipstream, Chiron Review, Main Street Rag, Lilliput Review, Modern Haiku, The Magnetic Poetry(R) Book of Poetry (Workman Publishing, 1997), and A Rustling and Waking Within (OPA, 2017). Crisis Chronicles Press published her first full-length collection, Age of Aquarius, in 2016. Actor Jonathan Frid ("Barnabas Collins," Dark Shadows) used three of her poems in his one-man touring show Genesis of Evil, and Lit Youngstown printed her poem "Disco" on their tee shirts, which makes her feel like a rock star. Borsenik is editor/publisher at NightBallet Press, and lives in Elyria, Ohio. Find her on Facebook and at www.dianneborsenik.com.

Описание:

What the Body Told is the second book of poetry from Rafael Campo, a practicing physician, a gay Cuban American, and winner of the National Poetry Series 1993 Open Competition. Exploring the themes begun in his first book, The Other Man Was Me, Campo extends the search for identity into new realms of fantasy and physicality. He travels inwardly to the most intimate spaces of the imagination where sexuality and gender collide and where life crosses into death. Whether facing a frenetic hospital emergency room to assess a patient critically ill with AIDS, or breathing in the quiet of his mother’s closet, Campo proposes with these poems an alternative means of healing and exposes the extent to which words themselves may be the most vital working parts of our bodies. The secret truths in What the Body Told, as the title implies, are already within each of us; in these vivid and provocative poems, Rafael Campo gives them a voice.

Lost in the Hospital
It’s not that I don’t like the hospital.
Those small bouquets of flowers, pert and brave.
The smell of antiseptic cleansers.
The ill, so wistful in their rooms, so true.
My friend, the one who’s dying, took me out
To where the patients go to smoke, IV’s
And oxygen tanks attached to them—
A tiny patio for skeletons. We shared
A cigaratte, which was delicious but
Too brief. I held his hand; it felt
Like someone’s keys. How beautiful it was,
The sunlight pointing down at us, as if
We were important, full of life, unbound.
I wandered for a moment where his ribs
Had made a space for me, and there, beside
The thundering waterfall of is heart,
I rubbed my eyes and thought “I’m lost.”
