Описание: Encountering evidence of postmortem examinations- dissection or autopsy in historic skeletal collections is relativelyrare, but recently there has been an increase in the number of reportedinstances. And much of what has been evaluated has been largely descriptiveand historical. The Bioarchaeology ofDissection and Autopsy brings together in a single volume the skeletal evidence ofpostmortem examination in the United States. Ranging from the earlycolonial period to the early 1900’s, from a coffeehouse at ColonialWilliamsburg to a Quaker burial vault in lower Manhattan, the contributions to this volume demonstrate the interpretive significance of a historically andtheoretically contextualizedbioarchaeology. The authors employ a wide range of perspectives, demonstrating how bioarchaeological evidence can be used to address a widerange of themes including social identity and marginalization, racialization, the nature of the body and fragmentation, and the emergence of medical practiceand authority in the United States.?

Описание: This book provides a critical examination of the sources of social science, clinical and archaeological evidence that bioarchaeologists use to study injury in past communities. Redfern explores the consequences of violence in a bioarchaeological context, highlighting how its evidence can shed new light on the hierarchies and social relationships of past societies.

"Using bioarchaeological data gathered from the remains of Apalachee, Timucua, and Guale individuals from mission cemeteries, the author operationalizes this biosocial approach to ethnogenesis to argue that these groups adapted to colonialism in ways that resulted in a new identity, which he identifies as the Florida Seminole."--Southwestern Mission Research Center Revista
"Clearly and elegantly demonstrates how bioarchaeological data, specifically metric data on dental morphology, can be used to elucidate otherwise obscured patterns of social identity, cultural change, and the circumstances which drove the formation of ethnic identities . . . throughout a volatile but poorly documented period of history in the southeastern U.S."--South Carolina Antiquities
"Examines precontact, early mission, and late precontact indigenous populations from the north Florida-Georgia coast region. . . . Investigates broad patterns of Native American ethnic identity and how they changed over time."--Journal of Middle Atlantic Archaeology
"Stojanowski compellingly situates biological distance research as central to the ethnohistorical and anthropological study of Native American and colonial history in the Southeastern United States. The intricate discussion of his statistical methodology--especially his acute and appropriate attention to the microevolutionary basis of his analyses and results--will very much be a must-read for all bioarchaeologists."--Ann M. Kakaliouras, Whittier College
"This artful combination of dental, archaeological, and historical information contributes much to our understanding of the peoples of the early historic Southeast. It will be of special interest to researchers grappling with how best to employ skeletal remains in the study of ethnogenesis."--George Milner, Pennsylvania State University
The story of Spanish explorers, the missions that followed, English slave raids, and Creek and Seminole political machinations has previously been told through the lens of history and archaeology. Christopher Stojanowski adds a biological component to the saga of colonial demographic collapse by focusing on identity transcendence and regeneration. As such, this work offers a different perspective on Florida's indigenous tribes, one that is explicitly interdisciplinary in inferring the formation of a new ethnic consciousness among La Florida's indigenous communities.
Christopher Stojanowski is a bioarchaeologist affiliated with the Center for Bioarchaeological Research at Arizona State University's School of Human Evolution and Social Change. He is the author of BioculturalHistoriesinLaFlorida and Mission Cemeteries, Mission Peoples.

Описание: This handbook examines human responses to climatic and environmental changes in the past, and their impacts on disease patterns, nutritional status, migration, and interpersonal violence. Bioarchaeology—the study of archaeological human skeletons—provides direct evidence of the human experience of past climate and environmental changes and serves as an important complement to paleoclimate, historical, and archaeological approaches to changes we may expect with global warming.Comprising 27 chapters from experts across a broad range of time periods and geographical regions, this book addresses hypotheses about how climate and environmental changes impact human health and well-being, factors that promote resilience, and circumstances that make migration or interpersonal violence a more likely outcome. The volume highlights the potential relevance of bioarchaeological analysis to contemporary challenges by organizing the chapters into a framework outlined by the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. Planning for a warmer world requires knowledge about humans as biological organisms with a deep connection to Earth's ecosystems balanced by an appreciation of how historical and socio-cultural circumstances, socioeconomic inequality, degrees of urbanization, community mobility, and social institutions play a role in shaping long-term outcomes for human communities. Containing a wealth of nuanced perspectives about human-environmental relations, book is key reading for students of environmental archaeology, bioarchaeology, and the history of disease. By providing a longer view of contemporary challenges, it may also interest readers in public health, public policy, and planning.

Описание: As researchers become increasingly interested in studying the lives of children in antiquity, this volume argues for the importance of a collaborative biocultural approach. Contributors draw on fields including skeletal biology and physiology, archaeology, sociocultural anthropology, pediatrics, and psychology to show that a diversity of research methods is the best way to illuminate the complexities of childhood.Contributors and case studies span the globe with locations including Egypt, Turkey, Italy, England, Japan, Peru, Bolivia, Canada, and the United States. Time periods range from the Neolithic to the Industrial Revolution. Leading experts in the bioarchaeology of childhood investigate breastfeeding and weaning trends of the past 10,000 years; mortuary data from child burials; skeletal trauma and stress events; bone size, shape, and growth; plasticity; and dietary histories.Emphasizing a life course approach and developmental perspective, this volume's interdisciplinary nature marks a paradigm shift in the way children of the past are studied. It points the way forward to a better understanding of childhood as a dynamic lived experience both physically and socially.

Описание:
Bioarchaeology of Marginalized People amplifies the voices of marginalized or powerless individuals. Following previous work done by physical anthropologists on the biology of poverty, this volume focuses on the voices of past actors who would normally be subsumed within a cohort or whose stories represent those of the minority. The physical effects of marginalization - manifest as skeletal markers of stress and disease - are read in their historical contexts to better understand vulnerability and the social determinants of health in the past. Bioarchaeological, archaeological, and historical datasets are integrated to explore the varied ways in which individuals may be marginalized both during and after their lifespan. By focusing on previously excluded voices this volume enriches our understanding of the lived experience of individuals in the past.
This volume queries the diverse meanings of marginalization, from physical or social peripheralization, to identity loss within a majority population, to a collective forgetting that excludes specific groups. Contributors to the volume highlight the histories of individuals who did not record their own stories, including two disparate Ancient Egyptian women and individuals from a high-status Indigenous cemetery in British Columbia. Additional chapters examine the marginalized individuals whose bodies comprise the Robert J. Terry anatomical collection and investigate inequalities in health status in individuals from Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Modern clinical population health research is examined through a historical lens, bringing a new perspective to the critical public health interventions occurring today. Together, these papers highlight the role that biological anthropologists play both in contributing to and challenging the marginalization of past populations.
Highlights the histories and stories of individuals whose voices were silenced, such as workhouse inmates, migrants, those of low socioeconomic status, the chronically ill, and those living in communities without a written language
Provides a holistic and more complete understanding of the lived experiences of the past, as well as changes in populations through time
Offers an interdisciplinary discussion with contributions from a wide variety of international authors
