Описание: Fundamental studies of steroid compounds have begun approximately thirty years ago with the solution of structures of cholesterol and bile acids. This field has been receiving more attention when the structures of the principal steroid hormones, aglycones of heart glycosides, sapogenins, steroid alkaloids, toad poisons have been established. An intensive interest in these derivatives of cyc1opentanoperhydrophe nanthrene was determined especially by practical viewpoints, notably by attempts to prepare by synthetical economical procedures a series of steroid hormones and their biologically active derivatives, further by theoretical viewpoints. Biochemistry of steroids was developing in its beginnings by studies of meta bolites of steroid hormones in animal organism and soon has brought a number of practical results that could be used also in medical diagnostics. Considerably later, the metabolism of steroid compounds was followed also in microorganisms, again in connection with the practical problem to aid to economical syntheses of some steroid hormones. Two names are of primary importance for the pioneer works in microbial transformations of steroids, that of the Italian worker L. MAMOLI who first realized the microbial biosynthesis of testosterone from dehydroepiandro sterone, and of the American chemist and microbiologist D. H. PETERSON, who has contributed by his fundamental experiments in microbial hydroxylation of steroids to the position eleven, especially to the synthesis of cortisone. Microbial transforma tions of steroids nowadays offer a valuable tool in the preparation of series otherwise difficultly accessible steroid compounds.

Cada vez es m s patente el apartamiento de una parte creciente de la lite cient fica del discurso simplista del neo-darwinismo que nos ha sido impuesto durante d cadas y que consideraba la evidente orientaci n a fines observable en los vivientes como un mero espejismo, una apariencia de dise o o finalidad perfectamente prescindible. El autor nos recuerda en este excelente trabajo que el reduccionismo cient fico imperante resulta perfectamente incapaz de explicar satisfactoriamente el fen meno del "orden teleol gico" emp ricamente detectable en biolog a. El autor se ala que las perspectivas propias de la filosof a de la naturaleza tradicional (causas formales y finales) son aptas para una comprensi n m s completa y satisfactoria de la organizaci n finalista de las estructuras biol gicas, pero lo hace desde la perspectiva metaf sica con supuestos y metodolog a diferentes a los de la ciencia. Sin embargo, tiene el potencial de convertirse en una metaf sica que complementa la visi n del Dise o Inteligente, realizada estrictamente desde el mbito cient fico. La Teor a del Dise o Inteligente, por su parte, en la medida en que se circunscribe al mbito te rico y epistemol gico de la ciencia contribuye de forma notable a poner de relieve la existencia de esta teleolog a real y emp ricamente verificable sin entrar en conflicto (y a pesar de los malentendidos que entre ambas corrientes a veces se suscitan) con el discurso m s estrictamente metaf sico de la tradici n aristot lico-tomista.
